Day Eleven: La Spezia

Posted on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Dave! Most people on the ship seem to be taking a long bus ride into Pisa or Florence from our place of landing here in the port city of La Spezia. Since I've already been both places, I decided to try something different and visit the coastal cities of Santa Margherita and Portofino.

It turned out to be a good decision.

Both cities are absolutely beautiful... rivaling even the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy. Santa Margherita is the larger of the two, and has a beautiful cathedral that's a little plain on the outside, but magnificent on the inside. In a disturbing turn, they seemed to be selling tribbles at the fruit markets here...

And, as if Santa Margherita wasn't beautiful enough, along comes Portofino. The city is just fantastic for tourists, and has terrific gelato...

I never get this lucky when it comes to vacation weather. I'm guessing a thunderstorm will be coming along any minute now...

You make me supremely jealous with these travelogues, and I work for a freaking airline!!

So I ask myself why I never visit all of these exotic places… kids? unadventurous wife? Money? Or am I just flipping lazy…? Hmmm… someday never comes.

    You live the life, buddy!

I travel a lot for my work, but have always tried to make time to add on some personal travel so I can at least TRY to enjoy all the trips I take. Having a vacation to someplace interesting every year is nice too. 🙂

  2. muskrat says:

I wish you spent every week on vacation. Love the pictures and the information. Maybe you should start playing the Lotto.

    • Dave2 says:

I wish I spent every day on vacation as well. But if I spent all my money on LOTTO tickets, I couldn’t afford to go the two weeks each year I do now!

  3. Finn says:

I am so enjoying this cruise – I seriously am considering booking one – but it’s hella expensive. 🙁

Anyway, your pictures are gorgeous. That weather is absolutely amazing!

In other news, you need a mani. My bet is the ladies that do that on the ship are very cute and possibly British. Book one.

    • Dave2 says:

It is hella-expensive. But if I don’t do something like this at least once a year, I’d go insane. And you can’t really place a price on your sanity!

Any manicure would be wasted on me. My work has my hands in chemicals and glues and such all the time, so they’d just get ruined in short order.

  4. Sybil Law says:

Gorgeous! So glad the weather is cooperating, too!

    • Dave2 says:

A pleasant surprise! I get very lucky with the weather most times, but it always seems there’s at least one crappy day in there somewhere.

Oh well. The trip’s not over yet!

  5. Stunning pictures. Truly amazing. Sorry I don’t really have much more to add but did want to point out how good they are.

    • Dave2 says:

Thanks! I’ve just been grabbing a few each night as I download from my camera. Some of them could undoubtedly benefit from a little Photoshop work, but I’ll have time for that when I get back.

      I hope.

  6. martymankins says:

Now this Portofino is a place I would like to vacation to someday. Very nice.

  7. Michelle M. says:

    These pictures are amazing. Amazing!
I think I’m starting to hate you.

  8. The last two pics are especially incredible! Freaking awesome.

  9. The Momshell says:

What a charming little corner of the world. And those TRIBBLES are so cool.
