Trip

Posted on Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Dave!I currently have 67 emails remaining in my inbox. Hopefully none of them are from you.

One of my favorite iPhone apps is Trip Journal (which I reviewed here). For the traveler, it's an awesome way to track your movements with the built-in GPS and document the things you see and do. Since Apple made the iPhone OS multi-tasking, it's even more awesome because you can leave it running in the background all the time. This way, it keeps track of where you go even when you're doing something else. Like making a $70 phone call back home. Or trying to calculate how totally worthless the US dollar is vs. the Euro. Or looking up the Italian translation for "There's a burning sensation when I urinate."

This afternoon while I was put on hold for entirely too long, I remembered that I had Trip Journal running during my vacation and decided to take a look...

Mediterranean Cruise Tracking

The black lines are where iPhone ran out of battery or lost signal or aliens abducted me. The lines in red are where I've been. The app tracks you down to street level, and so everything is there. Including when you go to the bathroom. Or visit a urologist. This is really cool, because you can re-live your entire trip...

Malta GPS Map

After a while, you'd be surprised what you can remember...

Amalfi Coast Map

Rome GPS Map

Monaco GPS Map

Of course, it can also make you entirely confused too...

Eze GPS Map

Hmmm... maybe the lines DON'T turn black when you've been abducted by aliens?

I remember right after you reviewed that app Vahid went out and bought it. It’s awesome and all, BUT I totally blame you for his nerd boner and I wrote you 67 emails telling you about it.

  2. Sybil Law says:

I wonder what the iPhone would do in the Bermuda Triangle?!

  3. Sarkawt says:

That was brill! Wonderful apps. I like IPhone very much, but it’s so expensive here. I just don’t get it. Btw, today, I went to fix my N97 then I decided to buy a 16-GB Iphone, the new one- 4G, but it was OMG; i didn’t know that it would cost 1500$ in our country. I also checked IPhone 3G’s price. It costs about 750$. So , I had to delay it to another time, maybe next year or God knows when. Everything is hard to get here 🙁

PS. I sent you an E-mail yesterday; it was about your favorite cartoon, Mickey Mouse! You might re-check your inbox. It’s very interesting.

Between the land ship and the obscene amount of money spent in Monaco, it looks like you had a great time.

  5. muskrat says:

I’m going to send you 2 emails, just so you’re at 69.

Also, how is it that you have this few emails after being gone this long? Ass.

  6. whall says:

When I was young, I envisioned some kind of map that would trace lines like that where I’d been my entire life. Then I thought of it overlapped with where anyone had ever been, with the lines darkening where the pathways had been walked on again. Multiply this times all of creation, since we could walk, and you’d have a pretty neat ball of rubber bands.

Then I imagined that it would be a goal of ours to paint the entire globe, so that every piece of the earth had at least one faint colored line over it.

Once all the earth was completely covered in marker lines, the entire thing resets and we start over.

That’s why I bought some land and put up a fence so that no-one ever ever walks on this one section. I’m saving humanity.

  7. The aliens didn’t abduct you. It was missing time due to small worm holes slamming into our planet. You were transported to a parallel universe.

At least, that’s what the voices in my head are telling me.

  8. A. Lewis says:

What a cool app! Except that then can see where you are…when you weren’t supposed to be someplace…like looking at porn or drinking heavily or robbing banks.

  9. whitenoise says:

Still trying to get an iP4, was hoping to have it before my next race- a half-marathon this Sunday. This is for another GPS app- Runkeeper, same idea as your TripJournal. My 3 still works fine except that the battery is pretty much toast and I don’t like the bulk of the extender pack. Curse you Steve Jobs for making a totally cool machine that has implanted its tentacles into my brain!!

  10. Trip Journal is indeed pretty awesome. If only Apple didn’t utterly screw me over and lose all the tracks from my last holiday, or could actually build a piece of hardware that didn’t drain the battery after two hours of use then I’d be set…
