Yesterday morning was a mad rush to get to work. I had been attacking my to-do list since 4:00am, and really need to get to the office so I could get everything sent out. This meant skipping breakfast, throwing my crap into my backpack, then storming out the door.
Where I proceeded to drop my iPhone on the pavement.
And then accidentally kick it across the parking lot when I bent over to pick it up.
So now my beautiful iPhone has a giant crack running down the front along with assorted chips in the glass...
Not a pretty site.
What's odd is that this is the first time I've damaged an iPhone in the five years I've been buying them. Over the years I've dropped them numerous times... I even dunked one in a waterfall... but they've never been worse for wear. Which is odd, because before I got my first iPhone, my mobiles were breaking all the time.
I'm rough on phones, yo.
So, after drop-kicking my current iPhone, I honestly did expect to pick it up and have it be fine. To see that big-ass crack there shouldn't have shocked me, but it really did. Oh well. Given the abuse I heap on these things, it was bound to happen eventually. The good news is that everything is still working fine.
And now my iPhone is off to the good people at iResQ so they can replace his face. Don't ask me how I'll manage without it until Friday... I honestly don't know... but I'm sure plenty of comfort chocolate pudding is in order.

These phones seem far to delicate. Everyone I know who has an iPhone seems to have something similar happen.
Are you kidding me? I DROP-KICKED IT ACROSS A PARKING LOT!! What phone could survive that? And, considering this is my first problem in five years, I’d say these phones are actually remarkably tough!

in my 5 years of owning iphones, never had a single issue.
Dang that sucks but I too have never (knock on wood) broken an iPhone. They are far more durable than drunks with beers would like to claim haha.
The people at iResQ are great! If you need a discount, I normally get a 5-15% one with their business card.
I love iResQ! They do great work for fairly reasonable prices… I’ve used them once with an iPod and once with a MacBook and everything went great.
The repair was on sale, so I don’t think a discount works… but thanks for the offer. Hopefully there won’t be a next time, but I’ll contact you if there is. 🙂
I’m no iPhone guy, but seeing your baby like that makes me sad. Would one of those big, goofy, rubber-ish cases have helped?
And I agree with you about how well they are made. Gia has been dropping hers for years (she’s on her 3rd one now), and she’s never had a problem. Knock on wood.
It was in a battery case, which does a pretty amazing job. But I don’t think that anything would have helped here. Given the fracture mark in the glass, I’m fairly certain that the phone struck face-down on a piece of raised gravel in the pavement. Short of having a covering over the front of the iPhone, not much can protect against that.
And yeah, I have really abused iPhones over the years to no effect. It takes a pretty serious hit to do damage like this. Unfortunately, I was up to that task!
Until Friday?! Man! Oh, wait – that’s only 2 days. Never mind, just me being out of it again!

At least you have other Apple devices to look at in the mean time while your phone is getting a face lift. (Or some quality FaceTime! *nyuck nyuck*)

I gasped out loud when I saw your photo! Is there anything sadder than an iDevice with a crack? I don’t think so. I’ve been super lucky myself. I’ve dropped mine more times than I care to admit and I’ve never broken one. They really are tougher than they look.
That gives me the shivers.

I just got my first iPhone and I am worried I will break it. I am not so good with phones.
Good to know that if I drop my iPhone and crack it that chocolate pudding is the cure.

my son has dropped his ipod touch and my daughter her ipad so many times i’m beginning to worry they might one day become parents. oh god, i don’t want to be on the news.
Not managed to break mine yet (touch wood!) but I have dropped it a couple of times. I have a rubberised case for it so it’s survived. Hopefully when my contract is up for renewal in September the next iPhone will be out…

I know I used *some* rescue place for my cracked phone way back when, and was very pleased with their service, speed and email notifications. Also, I’m pretty sure I asked people like you and Renagerie for input, but I cannot remember the name.
Ok so I went back and searched, and it was iResQ’s iPhone 3G S Broken Glass / Digitizer Replacement Service.
So, there you go.
