Dave! And so I installed Mac OS X Mavericks on my work Mac.

This resulted in all my email being deleted in Apple Mail. "No big deal," I thought. "I'll just rebuild my mailboxes from Gmail." Except that's impossible when Apple Mail deleted all your mail off of Gmail.

And so now all my email... absolutely everything... is gone.

Fortunately I was smart enough to make a backup before I started, so I am hoping that I can restore everything... but this is a fucking horrendous situation. Thank you so much Apple for once again releasing a piece of shit OS that's fucked me over. Hard.

UPDATE: Apparently the problem cannot be laid entirely on Apple's doorstep. Gmail uses a highly non-standard form of IMAP, and doesn't really give a shit. They want you to access Gmail from their website or official Gmail client... and with any other method you're just taking your chances. But, again, Apple is not entirely blameless because Gmail is an incredibly popular service, and they shouldn't advertise as being compatible if they really aren't... whether it's their fault or not!

UPDATE UPDATE: In all seriousness, Gmail is the work of the devil. If you are using it with ANY email client not made by Google, including Apple Mail, you should archive your mail and walk away. Immediately. I've just gone back to using my host email for a while, as I know they are using standard IMAP protocols and aren't throttling bandwidth in any way like Google does.

    Ugh.

Well… on the bright side… it is free.

And I bet your inbox hasn’t been so empty since 1994.

    Just sayin’.

    How about those Red Sox?

  2. LeSombre says:

You seem to be awfully unlucky with Apple stuff lately… :-/

  3. Robin says:

I hate the native mail app. Deleted that shit off my MacBook Pro last year. I use the GMail notifier for Chrome…easier.

  4. Donna says:

Oh I am so with you but different.

I won a new laptop with that horrifying windows 8. They released 8.1 which is supposed to make it more productive and less like a toy, right? So I go ahead and do the upgrade and it destroyed the boot loader and essentially bricked it. No recovery possible since it corrupted the “smart boot” thing win 8 needs.

I had to call the manufacturer and after 2 days of screaming, ranting and being reduced to tears, finally got them to replace it for me…

    Is Mars retrograde or something??

Yikes! How did it delete your mail off Gmail? I’ve got old stuff on Apple Mail but nothing current hooked into it so maybe it’d be OK.

Was planning to hold off a bit to see how things go for others and to make sure I’ve got everything backed up first.

Seems to happen a lot with Apple. Hmm…

  7. So, should I get the OS upgrade or not? I use a gmail address only for listservs, and I have 10,000 unread messages on it but search them from time to time for updates on people and laws.

I use apple mail for my work email and would be quite upset if they all disappeared. These emails are in no way tied to gmail, though, so am I good to go?

I’d still back up… just in case… but I’ve found no problems in any forums with any “regular” email accounts… only Gmail when accessed via Apple Mail (they’re fine if you access via the website and don’t have them in Apple Mail). Good luck!

  8. Yipes. That sucks. Did restoring from backup help?

  9. martymankins says:

I never did Gmail in Mail app. It didn’t support threaded mail. Same with mobile Mail on iDevices. Gmail on the broader and Gmail apps on the mobile side.

Hope your restore of Gmail works.

My biggest Mail 7 issue so far has been no Flagged view.

  10. I only use Gmail for a few high-volume lists, and back it up with a pop client. I don’t fully trust cloud services, and (sami-)diligently back things up to my pc.
