Day Eleven: Key West

Posted on Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Dave! When I booked my cruise, I found that flying home today would have cost an arm and a leg. And since I would rather spend an arm and a leg seeing cool stuff than trapped in a metal tube, I decided to extend my vacation a few days so the airfare would be cheaper.

The problem is that Ft. Lauderdale is the #1 destination for Spring Break that's going on now, and I really didn't want to be caught up in that craziness as I attempt to take a vacation from my vacation. So I decided to get as far from Ft. Lauderdale as possible... Key West. I haven't been here in ages, so why not? sure it's a long drive, but it's a nice drive too...

And boy was it a stunningly beautiful day to be in Key West...

Until I found out that Key West is the #2 destination for Spring Break that's going on now...

Slopy Joe's Bar in Key West

Oh well. Key West is absolute magic no matter what's going on, so I really don't have much choice but to enjoy it. And speaking of magic...

Disney Magic Docked in Key West

In a wild coincidence, the Disney Magic was in port... the same ship I cruised with in The Mediterranean back in 2010!

From there it was time to visit one of my most favorite Hard Rock Cafes on the planet. It's an amazing property that's built into a grand old house and crammed full of great memorabilia the way a Hard Rock should be...

And don't forget a slice of delicious Key Lime Pie...

Then back down South to watch the sunset...

Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, that's for sure!

30 DAYS DRAWING CHALLENGE: Just a Doodle...

Drawing Challenge 18

After spending a week in the Caribbean, I guess I have pirates on the brain! Kind of tough to draw it on my MacBook's trackpad though.

Comments

  1. The weather has been just amazing this week. Glad you had a great day.

  2. Kailyn says:

As I started reading your post, I remembered when I was in school on the East Coast and how yes, Key West was a popular destination for spring break. Then again I was in grad school then so I would hope that the craziness was taken down a few notches.

  3. Jeff says:

Just spent a full week there over Christmas and it was one of the best vacations I’ve ever had. Only problem now is that I’m totally jonesin to go back!

  4. B.E. Earl says:

I’ll be down in Key West next month for the first time in about 5 years. I can’t wait!

And I know it’s your thing, but I’ve never had a decent time at that Hard Rock. But then it’s not really there for me, so I shouldn’t complain. I prefer the Green Parrot down on Whitehead Street. Which certainly isn’t for everyone.

Psyched that you had a great time!

  5. Tug says:

What an awesome way to spend life back on the ground – I hope spring break is kind to you. 😉

  6. apricoco says:

KEY LIME PIE ON A STICK! COVERED IN CHOCOLATE. YOU MUST FIND IT. ASK AROUND. YOU’LL THANK ME LATER. IT’S SO DELICIOUS I CAN’T STOP TYPING IN ALL CAPS.

I’m in Miami, it’s too bad I’m busy all week, I would have taken you for a drink/bite on your way up or back from Key West.

  7. Sybil Law says:

Gorgeous! And now I’m jealous of your not a vacation! 🙂

  8. martymankins says:

OMG, that is a great HRC. So nice inside and crammed full of what a HRC should have.

    Key Lime Pie…. yum!

Key West is one of the places that I want to visit before too many more years pass.

  9. Megan says:

We’ve had gorgeous weather; I’m glad you got to enjoy it.

  10. the muskrat says:

Awesome! Deb and I are thinking about going to Miami and/or Key West in a few months with my free companion ticket Delta gave me.

  11. Jeff says:

Forgot to mention… I played at both Sloppy Joe’s and the Strand Theater (before it was a Walgreens of course) several times in the 80’s. Best memories ever. Also, my daughter is going to “summer college” down there next year for Intro to Marine Biology and Oceanography. She’ll become SCUBA certified too. Needless to say she’s totally jacked.
