Dave!Today as I was driving home from work, I was very nearly broadsided by somebody in a hurry to leave a parking lot.

As my life was flashing before my eyes, I was temporarily blinded by the awesomeness of all my earthly endeavors. Being blinded while driving caused my life to flash before my eyes... again... as I very nearly ran off the road into a bin of apples. Not the coolest way to die, but I do like apples so there's that.

It was nice I didn't die, because Betty White was guest-starring on Community tonight. AND SHE WAS TOTALLY AWESOME AS USUAL!

Of course, my Betty joy was short-lived once I had tuned into the two new shows of the evening...

S#*! My Dad Says. Truly, gut-wrenchingly awful. About as funny as having diarrhea while getting a root canal after totaling your car. So not-funny that I started laughing at the commercials because they were hilarious by comparison. I love William Shatner more than cantaloupe, but he is given nothing here worth anybody's time. His Priceline Negotiator commercials have more substance than this show. And are a hell of a lot funnier. How the bloody fuck did this show ever get greenlit?

Outsourced. This television show totally gutted a rather charming movie I liked of the same name... with absolutely no payoff. The film had an exotic feel of foreign lands and performances that drew you into the story. The television show has none of that and just feels petty, small, and even a little offensive. I don't like the lead character, hate the amateurish and unfunny digs on Indians and their culture, and everything just falls apart from there. When I see messes like this, I can't help but think of all the amazing shows which were canceled so that total shit like Outsourced has room to air. Even more tragic? Parks and Recreation was moved to mid-season so this show could have a time slot. Blergh.

So... the scorecard for this new television season so far is looking pretty grim. Only one show so far is in my "love it" column (Raising Hope), a mere handful in my "maybe" column (Undercovers, Lone Star, Running Wilde), a few in the "last chance" column (The Event, Hawaii Five-0, Better With You), and everything else in the "abort" column. With only a few shows left to debut, it's looking like slim pickings. After inevitable cancellations, I'll probably only be left with one or two shows to carry over.

Oh well... I watch entirely too much television anyway.

Dude. Give up on TV and just start a blog! Wait.
Give up on TV and start doing drugs!

  2. I loved Lone Star. That pretty much means it will for sure get cancelled. Sorry about that but I am a curse on new shows. When I love them, they are gone.

    • Dave2 says:

“Lone Star” was a big, big surprise. I had no intention of watching it, but it came highly recommended by a couple of critics so I gave it a shot. I have no idea how they will maintain the concept over the run of an entire television series, but I like what I saw in that first episode! Kind of messed up, but really compelling.

  3. shiny says:

I was looking forward to “Outsourced.” While there were a few clever lines, I certainly had higher expectations for the show than were actually brought to the table. I was hoping for something more along the lines of “The IT Crowd” (which is a great BBC show).

I liked Community’s dig on “#$%^& My Dad Says” within the first episode. 🙂

    • Dave2 says:

Love “The IT Crowd” and was actually looking forward to the US remake with Joel McHale… but I guess it died when he got “Community.” And, yes, the dig on that show over “S#*! My Dad Says” was priceless!

Have you seen the original “Outsourced” movie? It’s pretty good! Somehow they lost everything I liked in translation to the small screen though, because the television show didn’t meet even my low expectations.

  4. Poppy says:

Dawg and I laughed during the entire episode of S#*! My Dad Says. I think it’s because we share a commonality with the main character (a father we don’t quite get along with). Also, WILL SASSO! NICOLE SULLIVAN! WILLIAM SHATNER! DUDE!

We know we won’t enjoy it much longer, whether it stays on the air or not.

We didn’t get to watch Outsourced last night. It’s in the DVR.

    • Dave2 says:

I love Nicole Sullivan (her guest spots on “Scrubs” were genius) and LOVE William Shatner. But the only time I even came close to laughing was at the very end when he was dancing with his son and threw him down to go do something. But that was all Shatner, not the show. Unfortunately, by then it was too little too late. 🙁

  5. Foo says:

“About as funny as having diarrhea while getting a root canal after totaling your car” – and this is why I love you D2. Still laughing…can’t stop. Thanks for a great way to start my morning.

    • Dave2 says:

Somehow the thought of having diarrhea while squirming in a dentist chair is the ultimate horror story for me. Could there be anything worse? Oh yes… totaling your car first!

  6. Ren says:

The previews for Outsourced ruled it out for me right away as it was clearly not even trying to capture the spirit of the movie.

Per recommendations from you and others, I’ve downloaded Raising Hope from iTunes (the pilot is free), but have yet to watch it. Similarly for Detroit 1-8-7. Neither of these shows made my initial cut when deciding what to record. It’s nice that I get a second chance via iTunes.

Thinking about it, I’m not sure I’ve watched any of the new shows yet. TV time has been very short this fall due to kids’ activities and homework, combined with my early bedtime for 5:30am swimming three days a week. Not sure how I’m going to handle this. Oh, I did watch the first half of The Whole Truth last night while waiting at a kids’ activity. This was another show that didn’t make my original cut, but it’s available in ABC’s iPad player so I decided to give it a try. Halfway through, I’m still undecided.

    • Dave2 says:

I never had any intention of watching “Raising Hope” until I saw a free preview on iTunes and liked it. I am thankful I found it, because I would have been upset to miss that first episode!

I cannot watch “The Whole Truth” even though I like the concept and love Maura Tierney. It’s Rob Morrow. I cannot stand his annoying screen presence, and he ended up ruining “Northern Exposure” for me. I tried to like “Numbers” but had to stop because Rob Morrow destroyed it. I’m not even bothering with “The Whole Truth” because there’s no point in it so long as he’s starring.

  7. Barnmaven says:

I watched about two minutes of Shit My Dad Says before I turned it off. It was AWFUL.

Big Bang was awesome as usual…BLOSSOM! And best quote: “Winnie the Pooh is out of the honey tree!”

  8. With the exception of Survivor, I’m glad I’ve sat this first couple of weeks out. It’s given me time to read everyone’s reviews of the new shows so that I know which ones to avoid when I do Kev’s new season catchup this weekend.

  9. Suebob says:

I watched the “Outsourced” preview – about 4 minutes – and knew it was going to stink up the place. Making jokes about funny Indian names and clothing is so not funny! I am surrounded by Indians (from India, not children of immigrants) at work and there are many rich veins of funny there, but maybe not so hit-you-over-the-head-with-jokes-funny that TV demands.

  10. Troy says:

I tried to watch S@#T My Dad says last night and lasted about 5 minutes. It looked like Shatner was reading off a teleprompter last night. Horrible horrible crap.

Community was great – though I expected as much from the show. And Betty White was awesome.

  11. Sarkawt says:

WOW, you are really Televesionaholic! But honestly, sorry, I haven’t heard or seen any of these shows here; they’re new to me! I only watched “Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs which are really my favorites.
Well, maybe your flash can be really a good parody of the movie “Final Destination” Lol.
Hey older Dave, you need to consider taking care of your eyes after all. Wait! Thank you for your reply to my E-mail. Impressed.

  12. I can’t watch The Shat go down in flames.

  13. I really, really wanted to like Outsourced, but it was disappointing. For the best, I guess, since I don’t really have time to keep up with TV.
