Salmonella

Posted on Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Dave!Eggs!

I'm a big fan of eggs. Especially scrambled eggs and toast. And omelets. And deviled eggs. And egg casserole. And egg salad sandwiches. And quiche. And fried egg sandwiches. And so on. Not to mention all the delicious things that have eggs in them. Like cake.

So eggs are good, right?

DAVETOON: Good Egg!

Not if you read the news lately.

Apparently gazillions of eggs are being recalled because of a health scare. There are some bad eggs out there that have been infested with salmonella...

DAVETOON: Bad Egg!

Salmonella is an ugly business that can give you a nasty case of diarrhea. Or death. And nothing spoils your day like a good case of death.

Adds an exciting new element to breakfast, doesn't it?

  1. Hilly Sue says:

    Forget “cake or death?”
    It’s now “eggs or death?”.

  2. Sybil Law says:

But not MY eggs. (I know- I checked.) So I’m okay.
    The world is scary.

  3. whall says:

Eggs are awesome. I go through a couple dozen a week, easy. I’m trying to think of a funny conspiracy theory to go along with the hysteria but its just too serious. The fact that our leadership would start with eggs and then progress to other things just to pin it on terrorists and eventually get justification for martial law before the election has not a bit of funny stuck to it. Maybe my brain is scrambled. Or fried.

  4. Peggy Archer says:

That’s why I pay the extra money at the weekly farmers market for the local non industrial eggs.

They taste better and I don’t have to worry about this kind of stuff.

  5. muskrat says:

That’s why I like to let my chickens hatch and roam about their little chicken area at the local farm before I eat them!

  6. Donna says:

I bake a lot, make ice cream, etc. I only use pasturised eggs. I started using them years ago when the kids were little and always wanted to lick the bowl. They’re more expensive.

I really don’t know why all eggs are not pasturised…it just makes sense. Which is probably why it’s not done.

  7. Suebob says:

It’s another case of “everyone freak the fuck out.” If you cook the eggs, even the contaminated eggs, they are FINE. No salmonella. But no. We have to recall a billion eggs. Yeesh.

  8. y not i says:

I guess that second one would be the Deviled egg.

  9. The Momshell says:

Just hucked the dozen I bought last week into the trash. Sigh. Poor overworked momma hens!

  10. Neil T. says:

As Suebob says, provided you cook them properly (no bowl licking!) they’re fine, no risk of salmonella or any other nasties!
