Blogiversary III… WATCH with DAVE!

Posted on Friday, April 21st, 2006

Dave!TODAYS'S PRIZES: $290 worth of DVDs (and stuff)!

SORRY! THIS DRAWING IS NOW CLOSED! No new entries are being accepted.

Coming up with prizes for a blogiversary celebration is a difficult task. Not only do you run the risk of picking out stuff that people don't want, but you have to make your prize world-friendly. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. Last year I did a food entry, and found out export of food items is prohibited to many countries. Books are heavy, so shipping is expensive. And when it comes to videos... well, that's the toughest of all. DVDs are "region encoded", which mean that they don't play outside of the area you bought them. Last year, I thought I would fix this by including both a DVD and a VHS videotape for each movie. Little did I know, this was even more stupid, because video formats are different around the world too. Apparently there's no real solution.

So unfortunately, if you live outside of "Region 1" (the USA and Canada), you won't be able to watch any of today's prize-winning DVDs unless you have a "region-free" DVD player. Sorry, but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it. Please keep all this in mind if you live outside the USA and Canada and decide to enter. Though, I must say, this collection of brilliant video may well be worth tracking down a region-free player to watch...

B3 Watch Dave

Sweet! And away we go...

TODAY'S $200 "WATCH WITH DAVE" GRAND PRIZE INCLUDES...

B3 ShirtBlogography T-Shirt
Even the best movie or television show pales in comparison to how cool you are when wearing a sweet Blogography T-shirt! Artfully silk-screened by hand on high-quality Hanes Beefy-T shirts, these Blogography-inspired masterpieces are comfortable, durable, and are guaranteed to make you the best-dressed person in the room... Dave not included! (Value: $14.95 to $16.95)

B3 Veronica MarsVeronica Mars: The Complete First Season
Yeah, big surprise considering I feel Veronica Mars is the best show on television. Period. The only show I've ever enjoyed more was another Rob Thomas creation, Jeremy Piven's Cupid. And to think I almost passed it up because I had thought it was going to be yet another high school drama crapfest. But NOOOOoooo! Veronica Mars is smart, funny, brilliant television with the best mysteries of any show yet seen. Veronica is a typical student at uber-posh Neptune High, until the murder of her best friend turns her world upside down. Now she helps her father run a private investigation office, all while helping her friends at school, and always trying to solve the biggest mystery of all: who killed Lilly Kane? Every episode is a piece of a bigger puzzle, with the ultimate solution so good that you'll be compelled to watch every episode all over again top spot the clues you missed. Highest possible recommendation. (Value: $49.95)

B3 WonderfallsWonderfalls: The Complete Series
As if to prove that ABC isn't the only television network that can destroy a brilliant television show with incompetent scheduling and marketing... FOX decided to screw one of the freshest, most interesting show they've ever had: Wonderfalls. Jaye Tyler is uninspired and going nowhere in life. She passes her time by working in a gift shop at Niagara Falls and avoiding meaningful interaction with people at all costs. But when inanimate objects start speaking to her, she's forced to get involved with not only her family, but complete strangers as well. Featuring funny, biting humor that's anchored by an amazing cast, Wonderfalls is must-see television that very few people got to see. (Value $39.95)

B3 South ParkSouth Park: The Complete Second Season
South Park is one of those shows you either love or hate. You either appreciate it as some of the smartest, guttiest, satire of pop culture ever created... or condemn it as a crappily-animated cartoon with four foul-mouthed kids that should be banned from the air. Me? I love it for both reasons! The second season of South Park is probably one of my most favorite, mostly because it contains an episode devoted entirely to Terrance & Philip, who are probably my favorite animated characters ever. Sure this isn't a show for everybody, but if you can get past the potty humor, foul language, and sometimes disgusting antics... it remains brilliant commentary on just about everything going on in the world today. (Value: $49.95)

B3 Cinema ParadisoCinema Paradiso: The Director's Expanded Edition
I can't stand romance movies. They're all so lame and cliched... with sappy dialogue and often totally unrealistic premises. Only rarely do I ever see a romance film that's worth a crap, and most of the time it's because they have something else to offer. And most of those films are foreign (Amelie, A Very Long Engagement, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon being excellent examples). And so we come to Cinema Paradiso. This film tells the story of Toto, a young boy growing up in a small village in war-torn Italy. With his father gone, Toto turns to the projectionist at the local theater for guidance. He quickly develops a love for movies, which become the driving passion in his life. But as Toto grows up, he finds that movies don't have all the answers when it comes to love and life. Easily one of my favorite films of all time, Cimena Paradiso is a rare movie romance that works on every possible level. The DVD contains TWO versions of the film... the original, and an extended version that has a revelation so shocking that it completely changes the meaning of the movie. I recommend watching the original (shorter) edit first, because it would be difficult to feel the same about some of the characters if you watched the extended cut first. (Value: $14.95)

B3 Clerks AnimatedClerks, The Complete Animated Series: Uncensored
In counting the ways that ABC television has screwed brilliant television shows because of rampant stupidity, the animated Clerks series would occupy at least five spots... probably more. It is well-made, highly entertaining, and laugh-out-loud funny (basically, everything you want in a cartoon). I had my doubts that a fairly vulgar movie like Clerks could ever be adequately adapted for network television, but Kevin Smith somehow managed to do it, and do it well. At the core of Clerks is two guys stuck in a dead-end job who stopped caring about it long ago... now they're just trying to make it through another day. Hilarity ensues. Watch it now as preparation for Clerks II, coming this summer! (Value: $14.95)

B3 Veronica MarsBedazzled
This movie stars the incomparable Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil. What more do you really need to know? As an added bonus, this is actually a really good film... filled with all the things that make life worth living: Liz being funny, Liz being sexy, Liz being cute, Liz being naughty, and Liz in a bikini. If that weren't enough, there's also a positive life message to wrap it all up. If you haven't seen this movie yet, then I fear for your immortal soul. (Declared Value: $9.95. Actual Value: Priceless)

And, as if that weren't enough, you've got two other chances to win if the Grand Prize eludes you...

TWO $45 "WATCH WITH DAVE" RUNNER-UP PRIZES INCLUDE...

All the answers are scattered around Blogography somewhere, and can probably be found in my FAQ, 100 Questions, Archives, or by simply using the "Search Box" in my sidebar...

  1. Which Iowa location did Dave visit that shares its name with his favorite movie ever?
  2. DaveLand features a theater with continuous showings of every Elizabeth Hurley movie ever made... how many screens does it have?
  3. Dave claims which actor played the least gay hobbit of all the gay hobbits in the Lord of the Rings trilogy?
  4. Dave lost his testicles behind the couch cushions while watching what Veronica Mars event?
  5. Marklar! Dave decided to rename the star constellations, and created one for Elizabeth Hurley (the most beautiful woman to ever exist and one of the world's best actors)... what is it called?

Good luck!

Looking up so many countries takes a lot of time, so I’ve decided to average everything again…

If you live in the USA (including Alaska & Hawaii) or any US Territory (like Puerto Rico or Guam), then shipping is free.

If you live in Canada, your share of the shipping is $6.00 via Surface mail ($10.00 AIR)

Anywhere else, your share of the shipping is $11.00 via Surface Mail ($21.00 AIR)

As always, any insurance is extra, if you want it. Likewise, and applicable duties and taxes are the responsibility of the recipient.

    Good luck!

  2. Chanakin says:

These are sealed, right? Nobody’s going to find a surprise in the Elizabeth Hurley DVD?

  3. jodi says:

wonderfalls is an AWESOME show! I don’t own it [yet] but when I rented all the dvd’s from Netflix, I listened to ALL the commentaries because I loved that show so much.

  4. Dave2 says:

Chanakin: Indeed they are new and factory-sealed, my young padawan! Still, I cannot be held accountable for possibly licking the plastic wrap over Elizabeth Hurley’s stunning visage on the Bedazzled DVD!

Jodi: Every single person to whom I have loaned or told about the Wonderfalls DVDs have proceeded to run out and buy a set of their own. A massively entertaining program that has me cursing FOX Television DAILY for their stupid, STUPID mis-handling (and ultimate cancelation) of the show. Bastards!

  5. Tink says:

Dave…once again i commend you on your selections …clerks is an alltime fav of mine…being from jersey it holds actual memories for me….these are even better than porn.

  6. Bre says:

Yay! Wonderfalls! I love love loved that show! Clerks is a big favorite of mine as well, and I was lucky enough to meet Kevin Smith a few times socially (a friend of mine is married to his agent). He’s a really lovely guy, which just makes everything he’s done that much better for me!

  7. Kirkkitsch says:

Congratulations on your 3rd Blogiversary! Here’s hoping there are mannnny morrrrre! 😀

So are you remotely excited about Ms. Veronica Mars’ new horror movie, Pulse? Looks spooky!

  8. Dave2 says:

Tink: Better than porn?? Well, certainly more intellectually stimulating than porn!

Bre: I’ve seen Kevin Smith, but he was mobbed by people, and so I didn’t even attempt to meet him. Quite a shame, as I am a huge, huge fan of his work. 🙁

Kirkkitsch: Remotely? Heck, I am OVERTLY excited about ANY project that Kristen Bell might appear in… including “Pulse”!! 🙂

  9. sandra says:

Wait, you’re giving away a Bedazzled DVD? I would guess that you’d want as many copies as possible for yourself…although I suppose it is rather benevolent of you to share, and to spread the Liz love.

  10. Dave2 says:

    Hey! Wait… just wait a second…

Sharing Elizabeth Hurley DVDs is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THING than sharing Elizabeth Hurley’s LOVE. There will be no “spreading around” of my Elizabeth Hurley LOVE!

I may be benevolent, but there are limits as to just how generous I can be.

    🙂

  11. lizriz says:

The tail end to the Wonder Falls annoyance, is that they let it be killed by Joan of Arcadia – a show I personally and deeply LOVED – and then CBS killed Joan like one season later, so everyone ended up screwed.

HOLY CRAP SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME RUN A TELEVISION STUDIO!!!

  12. Kevin says:

    Damn fine selections.

  13. Dave2 says:

Liz: The first season of Joan was great… no doubt. But I think it should have been killed after the way that they drug it on in the second. Poor Amber Tamblyn had nothing more to do than whine every episode. Sad. They could have taken that show in such amazing places!

    Kevin: Word!

  14. adena says:

    Wonderfalls is great!

Do you know they are playing it on the LOGO channel now? (well, the past shows.)

  15. Dave2 says:

There are nothing BUT past shows… sadly… as the show was cancelled.

Yeah, I noticed that it was on LOGO. I guess the fact that Jaye’s sister was a lesbian was enough to have the show qualify? I’ve found that LOGO has picked up a lot of interesting programming… even for the straights! 🙂

  16. Simon W. says:

I am a noncommenter lurker so I have to answer the questions to enter. At first I was pissed but then I read all these hysterical postings when I searched for answers and can’t believe I missed so much! The answer to #4 dude, LMFAO!!! Now I have to go read all of your postings you bastard! It’s a trap!

  17. adena says:

I know, they play some good concerts, too.

I knew there were only past shows…I loved it when it was on, then suddenly….*poof*….it disappeared.

    Bah.

I was wondering why it was on LOGO…I kept seeing it on the guide, but ignored it, because I thought it must be some LOGO related show…never really paying attention. Until one day, it clicked, and I thought “Wait. WONDERfalls?? I wonder….”
And YUP!! It was! Then I remembered that Jaye’s sister was a lesbian, and it made sense.

  18. Dave2 says:

Simon: A trap indeed. I should charge money to access my archives. Since you don’t have a Gravatar, is it okay if I picture you as Admiral Ackbar??

    “It’s a trap!”

Adena: At least it disappeared after kind of resolving all the plotlines… far better than the hundreds of shows that get cancelled in the middle of a major cliffhanger! 🙂

  19. lizriz says:

Yeah, it (Joan of Arcadia) was struggling in season 2, but there was SO MUCH THERE I was blown away by, I just wish they’d stayed committed to it and kept refining it. Think about how EFFING AWESOME Buffy was in seasons six and seven, after taking a few seasons to find itself.

    Sigh.

  20. Pauly D says:

And I thought I was the only person who loved Bedazzled.

  21. Dave2 says:

Liz: That’s actually true of so many shows. It’s not like the good-old days when ratings weren’t the absolute authority on whether a show lives or dies. I long for the days that shows were given time to fine-tune what makes them great and find their audience. “X-Files” is a classic example… if FOX weren’t a struggling new network and they had that show on the schedule today?? Would have never gone past Season One. And, of course, brilliant cancelled shows are most always replaced by something stupid that’s immediately cancelled anyways, and the network would have been better off keeping the original. Sad.

Pauly: Ya know, I would probably love that film even if it didn’t have Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil. Sure she is absolutely perfect in the part and elevates the movie to an entirely new level with her naughty performance… but it was a really good film even when you set that aside. Brendan Frasier is great at these kind of roles (am I the only one who thinks his performances on “Scrubs” were some of the best things he’s ever done?).

  22. Firda says:

I was so excited when Joan (of Arcadia) met the Devil (or what I thought to be the Devil), thinking how interesting the next season would potentially be. But of course, they had to cancel the show. Boo!

  23. Eve says:

    Dude, NICE selections!!!!!!!

I totally friggin’ loved Bedazzled. First time I saw it, I was on a plane going to Las Vegas. Liz was so charming, that I found it hard to dislike her character (and she was the Devil!!!). Brendon Frasier was funny as all those pathetic characters he became, my favorite being the lispy sensitive guy “…I love you, Al-lis-sthon…” And c’mon, it was directed by Harold Ramis!!!

  24. Nicole says:

I want to win this one. Really, really want to win this one. I want to win this one so much I would offer you my first born child in exchange were I to ever have one. Although perhaps the fact that I would exchange a child for a set of DVDs is a sign I shouldn’t have kids?

  25. Kevin says:

No, Dave, you are not the only person to think that Fraser’s performances on Scrubs were great. I think that show has an effect on its guest stars. Michael J. Fox was awesome, Tom Cavanaugh is always funny… the list goes on (at least, I think there’s a list).

  26. shannon says:

I also don’t usually comment, so now I have to search your site as well. I’m guessing I already know the answer to the Veronica Mars question, cause it has to be the moment that shocked everyone who watches The Most Awesome Show Ever. But I’ll search your site and make sure i’m right. I love Veronica Mars and I loved Wonderfalls before the morons at Fox cancelled it.

  27. Mooselet says:

Living overseas, I’ve discovered ways around that pesky region encoding thing. I’m so entering this one – the canceled shows don’t get a chance over here so DVD is my only chance to see them.

  28. ChillyWilly says:

    Awesome selection.

Terrance and Phillip are the best….

  29. SJ says:

This is worth entering for Cinema Paradiso alone. I’ve only seen it once, but LOVED it. And I’d love to see Wonderfalls.

But, WTF??? I never knew there was an animated series of Clerks!!! I love that film so much, I couldn’t make myself discard my old VHS tape of it when I bought the DVD. I mean, what if my DVD player broke or something? There aren’t many movies I’m that devoted to. I can only think of 15 or 20…

By the way, it’s nice that you’ve made it cool to like Bedazzled. People have actually heckled me for saying it was fun to watch. Morons.

  30. BlogLaughs says:

So, Dave, does commenting enter me in the contest? 😀

Seriously, Cinema Paradiso is a great film for serious movie fans. Bedazzled isn’t the greatest movie in the world, but your girlfriend sure is smokin’ in that red bikini.

  31. Chaz says:

Jumping Jehoshaphat! These prizes just keep getting better, and I’m now I’m more sure than ever that your next prize will have to be a Heffalump, and boy, that would be super cool! Honestly, what could be better? In any case, Dave, you’re really going all out with Blogiversary III! Kudos to you!

  32. suze says:

veronica mars is smarter than me.

  33. Dave2 says:

Veronica Mars is smarter than everybody.

That’s what makes her Veronica Mars! 🙂

  34. Karl says:

Awesome selection, dude. You know, I’ve never watched “Veronica Mars.” Like…ever. I keep hearing how awesome it is and then I keep not watching it. I don’t know what it’s scheduled against but I think I watch something different then. Perhaps this can help to reculture me.

  35. Nicola says:

As a dvd region 2 watcher, and with a collection so big that we’re running out of storage space, I’m gonna miss this one out. I’m gonna have to go look up the questions, if only to find out what Simon W is wetting himself at……

  36. Rikki says:

Only because we share headwound stories from staying at the same hotel downtown Seattle am I going to attempt to answer these questions…though had I know I was supposed to be posting on your blog all this time in order to win stuff I’d have started a lot sooner!

  37. Dave2 says:

    Headwound?!?

OMG! YOU STAYED AT THE HOTEL MAX, DIDN’T YOU?!?

    🙂

  38. Wejn says:

Ugh, this one was kinda hard for me … esp. #4 as English ain’t my native language and I had trouble finding out what’s the answer (finding the post was piece of cake).

Btw, is the “READ WITH DAVE” in the grand prize’s title intentional?

  39. Dave2 says:

    Oops… no.

    Fixed!

And you only need to answer four questions… so feel free to skip #4 if you want (though the picture on that entry gives a big clue!).

  40. Alexis says:

Did you happen to see the 2 episodes of Deadwood featuring Kristen Bell? She played one sick cookie…

  41. Mocha says:

I am emitting a huge, long, sigh.

    I want a gravatar. I want a gravatar NOW.

  42. Dave2 says:

Never watched “Deadwood”, and had no idea that Kristen Bell ever had a guest appearance… darn it, another thing to add to my TiVo!! 🙂

Oh, and Mocha, Gravatars are FREE, so you can have one NOW! You just have to wait a few days for the approval to go through. 🙂

  43. Belinda says:

I won’t enter this one, because I’ve multiply-watched/own all of the films. So obivously, in my eyes, you are a genius.

  44. Rabbit says:

This post makes me want to watch more TV. Clearly I’ve been missing out.

  45. *cotton says:

damn i really really want those DVDs!!! South Park’s not allowed here though so i wonder if it’ll get confiscated at customs… hmmm…

  46. Dave2 says:

As mentioned in the rules, it is perfectly okay to request that a part of a prize package be removed if you don’t want it or it is not allowed where you live. 🙂

  47. Cavan says:

I’m jazzed about this prize. I haven’t seen any of these save for Bedazzled.

  48. Bec says:

I had forgotten how good Bedazzled was until I was remeinded (once or twice) by this glorious site. My male houseate seemed to be quite happy I was watching it… Seemed very interested in the constume design… hmmmm…

  49. Epona says:

Bedazzled is an awesome movie. It’s hilarious. Especially the wishing for a Big Mac and large Coke part and when Brendon Fraser tells off his gay lover. I about die laughing when I see that.
