When it comes to avatars, I like photographs best because you can put a face to what somebody wrote. So even though I think Lil' Dave and Bad Monkey would make better avatars for me, I always bite the bullet and upload a photo of myself.
Unlike SOME people (ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem, ahem... etc. etc... YOU know who you are!).
This is my default avatar...
Whenever I sign up for a new social media site or online service or user forum or whatever, that's what I use. It's fairly current, doesn't look too hideous, is perfectly square, reduces well, and is stored on my desktop so it's ready to go at a moment's notice.
And most of the time it's fine because I don't use those kind of sites very often.
But Twitter is a service I use every day, several times a day. Whatever photo I use on Twitter is something I see constantly. Consequently, I get bored with my avatar after a while and am compelled to change it. To keep track of the photos I've used, I put copies in a folder. Today, I changed avatars again, and noticed that folder is getting quite full. Turns out I've used 21 different images for Twitter so far...
Meh. Perhaps one of these days I'll find myself an avatar I like well enough to keep for a while.
But before I go... while puttering around the internet today, I found this to be very cool and this to be totally reprehensible.
I love comments! However, all comments are moderated, and won't appear until approved. Are you an abusive troll with nothing to contribute? Don't bother. Selling something? Don't bother. Spam linking? Don't bother.
PLEASE NOTE: My comment-spam protection requires JavaScript... if you have it turned off or are using a mobile device without JavaScript, commenting won't work. Sorry.
Oh COME ON!
You’ve seen pictures of me, right? You know that I look just like my Twitter avatar (minus the newspaper hat and the Swamp Thing, of course). So what’s the problem? ;-P
The problem is that it doesn’t matter if I know what you look like or not. When I read one of your tweets, I picture it as having come from a tiny cartoon character!
🙂 And?
Sorry dude, I get your point…I really do. But it’s hard to keep your anonymity when you start putting your face on stuff online. And for me that’s got to come first, even if you are stuck thinking of me a dumpy cartoon character in a paper hat. You’re comfortable with your name and face being all over the place online and you have every right to make that choice. But not all of us feel that way. Do we not have that right too, to feel as we feel and do as we see fit, even if it makes you…disgruntled?
Dude, you are insanely adorable.
Don’t let Dave kid you, folks. I really AM a tiny cartoon. Ok, not TINY, but definitely cartoon-y. SHUT UP.
I like my doodle. I don’t draw much (shocker!), so it’s all I have.
High-larious at both the name Davatars and the image with you decked out in a red bonnet-like hat and golden ‘tails.
Why that’s my Holovirus Rimmer costume from Avitable’s Halloween party two years ago!
Variety is the spice of life; monotony brings home the groceries. Stick with the avatar that works for you
first visit to your blog, and I have to agree with you on that thing you found cool and that other thing you found reprehensible.
We know the truth you just want to rub your devilishly good looks in our faces. Whereas I want to hide my ugly mug in hopes it might save one or more of you from nightmares
Ha! When you were typing “devilishly good looks” just then… did you even try to contain the laughter? 🙂
And perhaps if you had the proper accessory, you too could have “devilishly good looks.” Like… oh… I dunno… maybe something like… A TIARA!!!
Gah! Bitch stole my tiara!!
Since I’m relegated to an etc, I have no guilt about my avatar.
Oh, c’mon Dave. You’re the MAC guy in the I’m a PC ads. You’re cool, you’re hip, everybody loves you. Some of us are forced to hide behind the aurora borealis.
I have to agree – the Holovirus costume is freaking awesome. 😛
Eh, I look nothing like my avatar. You don’t get the full effect of sweat pants and a pony tail with mine. 😉
Personally, I like the ones with you wearing your glasses. There’s just something about it…
You put all of my favorites in one row…the top one!
But my avatar looks JUST like me. It’s cartoon me.
🙂
The Surprise Wedding Reception was very cool, if a bit out of character for Improv Anywhere. I’m not sure the Idaho Potato Commission reaches the level of reprehensible. Trademark issues are complicated and it seems that they did offer to foot some of the bill for the forced name change.
However, it does seem to be a pretty strong indictment of the system that the little guy really has no option but to cave to the pressure from the big guy. Myabe reprehensible is appropriate after all….
While I would prefer to see the real deal in someone’s avatar, I can understand why someone would want to use a cartoon version of themselves. Or to have something that may represent their blog name (which is why I don’t have a Banal Leakage logo).
My biggest pet peeve about Twitter avatars: leaving that default brown with odd-shaped circles for eyes. If you are going to make the jump into the Twitter world, at least upload some sort of avatar. Just about anyone that has the default avatar gets unfollowed or blocked by me.
My favorite of the avatars you used is the one you took in Santa Fe with the glasses. It’s both fun and topical.
i thought your reprehensible link might have been this.
Er… why?
I figure the fourteen pictures of myself on my blog are sufficient. I look more like King Hippo anyways.
1,3,13,16 and 20 mmmkay, thanks.
Glad I narrowly missed being an “ahem” by posting my first ever real-me avatar a few weeks back. And I always LOVE your avatars… The many sides of Dave2 are always fascinating!
I know I’ve been more lurker than commenter for a long while, I’m doing this JUST FOR YOU DAVE! 🙂
I’ve been meaning to get a new avatar, but that would mean taking a self photo that I actually LIKE. That’s the hard part.
My fave is the b&w of you in the cowboy hat. 😉
For me, the problem with avatars is their squareness. I really don’t compose that way, so I find it hard to find suitable pics. Working on it though… 😉
The one with the rabbit is cute. Do you have one holding a rubber duckie? That would totally be hot. 🙂
no one wants to see the hot mess that is me, honestly….but maybe, just for you I will change my avatar Dave….
thanks for the twitter linkage BTW..
I prefer the real avatars… wait a second, is that an oxymoron?
It’d be cool if twitter supported multiple avatars that were either random, or cycled every [x] updates.
I like to change my avatar every couple of months or so, but I always feel like I need to update it everywhere. That gets tedious.
I think I look slightly better as a vectorized avatar myself.
I like the very first one.
