I have been an unapologetic fan of fast food for forever. I used to travel a lot for work. Despite the fantasy that work travel is a non-stop vacation, it's actually a tough life to have. You still have a day of work, but you don't get to go home at the end of the day. And since you're too tired to go out and do fun stuff in whatever city you're in, you only have the energy to go back to your hotel and crash.
Hence my love at fast food. I can run through a drive-through after work on my way back to my home away from home, then crash.
I'm pretty sure you can see where this is going.
Fast food now is barely food. And it's so expensive that you might as well go to a real restaurant with table service. That's what I've been doing.
And if you want to watch an interesting video about the downfall of fast food, here you go...
Not that going to a real restaurant is a guarantee of a great experience. Now more than ever, it's not. And here's why...
More and more I'm happier just cooking at home. Sure it's a pain in the ass, and groceries are insanely expensive, but at least it's quality I can count on.
That's about all that's left.

The good thing about fast food is you can pay a (relatively) low price for a small amount of food.
When we were in Europe in 2022 I was actually frustrated at how hard it was to get fast food. When you’re travelling you don’t want to eat at a restaurant Every Single Meal and just want to grab something small for lunch or to keep you going.
In Japan more often than not we’d just grab some snackages and beer from a 7-11 for dinner and have it in the hotel.
The thing that sends me into a rage spiral quicker than most deserving topics is food shaming. For the longest time, people without money ended up eating a lot of fast food because it was cheaper than eating a healthier option… including buying healthy groceries to cook meals at home (assuming they have a home). But now fast food isn’t much cheaper, which means even people who ate it because it was what they can afford are losing a source of cheap food. It’s scary.
And, yeah, Asia is fantastic when it comes to inexpensive and delicious food options. I ate at 7-11 50% of the time the last time I was in Japan. I felt no worse for wear, nor did I feel like I was missing out on any culinary experiences in the country. It was across the street from my hotel and was easy, cheap, and delicious enough to keep me coming back.
Yeah I find it totally bizarre that heavily processed foods are (were?) so much cheaper than “real” food. Buying power of big corporations and economies of scale I guess..
