The sadistic idiot who designed the new sidewalks in town has randomly placed dips and curb-stops where they have no business being. This makes walking down the street a perilous ordeal and a real challenge, even if you're being careful. I know this because I tripped over a cement block jutting out into the sidewalk which sent me crashing to the ground on Monday.
So now I have a skinned knee, a scraped elbow, tore-up hands, and aches that run down my entire body. I think I must have pulled a muscle somewhere and that's thrown everything out of whack. Today it's gotten worse, and just getting up and walking is fairly painful.
Which has me thinking back to when I was a kid. I used to take falls much worse than this and bounce back in minutes. Now it's two days and counting. I have to wonder if twenty years from now such a fall will result in a broken hip.
Something to look forward to, I suppose.
In the meanwhile I guess I just have to be more careful and not risk my life by walking on a sidewalk or other similar dangerous activities.
And load up on pain relief medication.
I'd blog more about how getting old sucks, but it's almost midnight and apparently I need my rest.

Somebody say pain meds? Where? I’ll take some!
A few months back I was hanging in NYC with some friends. We were headed to a Belgian Beer Bar and I was walking and talking and not paying attention. Tripped over something or other (possibly my own feet), went down hard. But I jutted my arm out, did some weird acrobatic bounce, and found myself right back up on my feet and continued walking and talking. I look back at my friends and they were just standing there, staring at me with their mouths open. “Dude…how the hell did you do that?” My answer, as always, “I dunno…drunk skills”.
The next day I woke up wondering why my entire left side ached. So yeah…gotta stop doing that. Falling, not drinking.
It’s worse when, for whatever reason they do it this way, the sidewalk slopes up and down rapidly for driveways and entrances. My wife has Charcot-Marie-Tooth and needs an AFO to walk. If we’re visiting an area we’re not familiar with and it uses those, she ends up on the ground more often than not. In the end she’s either walking around and looking at the ground to make sure it’s not suddenly going to drop down, or we use the wheelchair.
Some places in Portland have the worst sidewalks. It’s not so much that they are paved oddly but rather that tree roots and lack of maintenance have created a death trap to walk in. I know I’ve stumbled and even fell once or twice.
I hope you feel better! Skinned knees are zero amounts of fun.
Haha! I was convinced to take up snowboarding two years ago. Went one time, kind of liked it, and thought I would take it up in full last year. Except I broke my leg fishing. So then I took it up again last month and have been several times. I never thought I would get into so many conversations with people about how much I wanted to get home and take ibuprofen.
When I saw this posts title, I thought it was another praise for Matt & Kim.
The pure nature of how we fall makes me wonder why we don’t fall more, given the state of most sidewalks I walk on (growing trees are a sidewalks nemesis)
On the upside, you didn’t get hit by a car on said sidewalk.
