Dave!Annnnd... Apple had another one of their "Special Events" today.

As usual, it was filled with cool stuff and left me wanting to have Steve Jobs' baby. Again.

The "big news" of the day was the revamp of the iPod line. The tiny iPod Shuffle (my favorite of all the iPods) took a disastrous turn during the last revision when they took away the navigation button. This time, they wisely brought the buttons back, but kept the sweet "VoiceOver" technology which uses a robot voice to compensate for the lack of display...

iPod Shuffle v3

I'd buy one, but I already have the original iPod Shuffle. Still, the new colors are nice...

And, in even cooler news, Apple revised the iPod nano. My first-generation iPod nano powers my car stereo... I ditched it when I got my first iPod Shuffle because the size was better. Except the new fifth-generation nano is only a little bigger than my existing Shuffle. It's tiny! But, despite the size, Apple managed to fit a multi-touch screen interface, which is damn cool...

I must have one. And have one I shall. I'll just slip my iPod Shuffle into my next AnySoldier.com care package so it doesn't go to waste.

Apple also revised the iPod Touch, but I have an iPhone so I didn't pay attention. I did perk up again when they introduced the new Apple TV though...

Apple TV

They took out the hard drive, which makes the unit absolutely perfect. I never bought the original Apple TV precisely because of the hard drive... no matter how big of one they put in the thing, it will never be big enough. As your media collection grows, the hard drive eventually fills up. My media belongs on an expandable network drive system, not locked away inside a television box. So now I'm actually going to consider buying Apple TV. It's the simplest possible way to stream all my videos, photos, and music to my television (including NetFlix streams!) and the $99 price feels right.

His Holiness Steve Jobs also teased us with a sneak peek at new stuff coming up for the iPad, including PRINTING, which is a much-needed feature for the device. It's also getting all the sweet new iOS 4 iPhone goodies like multitasking and a unified in-box for Mail.

BUT, the thing that fascinated me most to come from the "Special Event" was the revisions to Apple's venerable iTunes. That I'll save for tomorrow...

My first thought when I saw the iPod nano was, “Why would anyone buy the Shuffle instead of the nano?” They’re basically the same size but the nano has much more functionality. I won’t miss the video camera–I’ve never owned a nano anyway.

And the possibility to time-shift radio? Hello not missing Morning Edition or All Things Considered or Marketplace just because of the phone ringing. How is the new nano anything but pure win?

As for the Apple TV, I thought, “Holy hell! Only $100?! I might just get this now and a Netflix account and dump my DirecTV!” Between the iTunes Store and Netflix, they’ve basically got it covered.

    These toys are pretty.

My feelings on the new nano have already been posted on Twitter. I think the device is pretty cool, but I personally would have liked a 4gb new nano and had them introduce it as the new Shuffle for $79. I like the new smaller size of the Shuffle and the return of the click wheel, but I like the size of the previous model of the nano. It had a bigger screen, played video and was easily held in my hand to operate.

I do like the new Apple TV without any reservations. Very cool. This should be a a big boon for Apple and getting into most homes for under $100.

  4. Sybil Law says:

My daughter has an iPod shuffle – the thing drove us CRAZY, so I’m glad they added the buttons!

  5. Finn says:

I’m seriously considering dumping cable and just going with Apple TV, but I have to find out more about what I can watch on it. I have no problem just renting TV episodes – I don’t watch much and it will probably still cost me less than cable.

  6. Ren says:

I like the new Apple TV, but it just doesn’t quite fit into my television echosystem. I already have multiple Netflix devices, so that’s not of particular benefit (though great that it has it). I have a DVI cable by my MacBook Pro that I use to watch streaming TV shows from Hulu or network web sites on the TV. Sure, Apple TV would be more convenient than plugging in the DVI and audio cables to the laptop, but since it doesn’t support streaming from arbitrary websites, I’ll still need to do that some of the time. And as long as I do it some of the time, I can do it for the iTunes rentals as well.

Which isn’t to say that it doesn’t fit other people’s needs — I’m sure it does. I’m just a little sad that it doesn’t fit mine. Actually, now that I think about it, all I really need to make it a must-have is to be able to use AirPlay from my MacBook Pro to display whatever I want. Yup, that would do it. Where do I sign up for that?

  7. I wasn’t sure about the Apple TV because I already hook my MacBook Pro up to my TV to stream from Netflix so wasn’t entirely sure what buying another device that essentially does the same thing would get me. I dunno, it is sweet looking though and only $99 so who knows what Santa might bring this year 😉

  8. Such a great idea to put your old Shuffle in your AnySoldier.com package!

  9. Avitable says:

I’ve read more about AppleTV, and I do like the streaming capability for rentals. I just wish that there was a way to make purchases and have them stored somewhere other than my iPhone or computer. If Apple offered online storage, that would be cooler.
