Driver

Posted on Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Dave!So. Very. Tired.

Today I drove all the way to Spokane for a 1-hour appointment, ate David's Pizza for lunch, then drove back home. That's nine hours of my life I'm never getting back.

The drive itself is pretty boring because the Columbia Basin doesn't have much to see. But an occasional glimpse of nice scenery makes it not so terrible...

The problem is that the drive takes forever. Washington State is bigger than it looks...

If you live on the East Coast, I suppose it would be about the same as driving from New York City to Baltimore and back...

As another example... say, if you live in Australia... it would be like driving from Sydney to Canberra and back, then looping around the city a couple of times...

Or, if you're a fan of the most excellent BBC show Gavin & Stacey, it's a little less miles than when Gavin drives from Billericay, England to Barry, Wales and back...

And, if you live in Alaska, you would think it would be just like hopping the ferry from Ketchikan... past where the Sarah Palin endorsed "Bridge To Nowhere" would have been if she hadn't disavowed it to benefit her career... all the way to the city of Terrace in British Columbia and back. But, while the miles are about the same, the ferry ride makes the total trip several hours longer...

Bleh. It's only 11:00 and I'm falling asleep. But if I go to bed now, I'll be waking up at 3:00am so I really should try to stay awake a bit longer.

Thinking of Sarah Palin making it to the White House should be enough to keep me wide awake and scared shitless for several hours, so perhaps I'll give that a try...

  1. The Matt says:

Hah, I was trying to figure out what the distance difference would be using aussie towns.. I scroll down and its staring right at me haha. GG Dave-O

I never realized how many odd sounding towns we have.. Wagga Wagga being a personal favourite.

  2. Living in ‘lil ‘ol Connecticut all my life, I could never imagine living in a state as big as Washington.

There isn’t a place in Connecticut that takes three hours to get to from another place in Connecticut.

  3. As someone that did the Sydney-Canberra drive every month or so for a year and a half, I sympathise. Admittedly I did have a nice someone waiting for me at the end each time 🙂

I’d argue the New York to Baltimore trip being equivalent (or even the getting in and out of Sydney over the weekend peak hours) .. surely there’d be next to no traffic anywhere along your trip?

  4. Whitenoise says:

What if I lived in Southern Ontario…?

  5. Whitenoise says:

…or South Africa? Or maybe even the south of France…?

  6. Avitable says:

That’s why I’m just waiting for you to invent Daveportation.

  7. Mocha says:

I certainly hope you got some rest. You really do need sleep, it’s good for the soul. If you fell asleep sans underwear, however, I’d worry about having dreams about Palin.

Well, shit. That’s enough to keep ME awake for the next 72 hours.

    Dreaming of you, Dave…

  8. Sue says:

    That scenic photograph is beautiful!

  9. Don says:

Please don’t link Palin with BC. Us Canadians don’t want to have anything to do with her policies. ;p)

  10. Hilly says:

Or if you live in California, it’s like driving from LA to Visalia!

Oy, sorry your drive sucked it out of you 🙂

  11. Eileen Dover says:

Sucks about the drive, but hey, you were able to have lunch at a pizza place named after you. SWEEEET!

And um, how happy am I that you included the image of Sydney to Canberra? Of course, I didn’t give a rats arse about the route because, honestly, my hometown is one of the western Sydney towns featured on that map and I like to see the town name EVERYWHERE!

  12. Patty says:

I used to hate that drive when I was young and going from Whidbey Island all the way to WSU in pullman. Yeah….boring!!!

  13. claire says:

uf, I sympathize. Reminds me of grad school: we’d drive from Tallahassee, FL to Atlanta, GA to get our films timed. 9-10 hours driving for less than 2 hours of appointment. Bleh.

  14. ChillyWilly says:

That four hour drive each way for me would be going from Salt Lake City to St. George (assuming there are no speed traps and the weather is nice). And it can get pretty boring as well. Of course, no where near Moses Hole… you got me beat on that one.

  15. undisciplined says:

Palin is better than Red Bull! Truly frightening! My little red balloon of hope is that a ticket with a nutjob like Palin on it is doomed to fail!

  16. Lisa says:

To be honest, I didn’t realize that Washington was that big. I’ve never really been to that part of the country. At least you got some good pizza and a great picture! Hope you got some rest.

  17. Dave you’re kind of my hero for making something so inane into a completely amusing post.
    xo

  18. The last time I did an exact (well, ish) four hour drive was from Phoenix to the Hoover Dam. Now *that* is the most boring drive in the history of driving.

  19. John says:

NYC to Baltimore and BACK!? *shudder*

    : )

  20. Brandon says:

Way to put Washington in perspective for people that don’t quite get it. This is a HUGE state especially since a big portion of it is farmland. I love the drive across, but only occasionally.

Totally off-topic…did you see that there is a Sonic Drive-In in Wenatchee now? Just opened recently. Not sure if it helps you any, but I bet there are some good things a vegetarian on a crazy diet could eat there.

  21. awytch says:

Highway 2 has better scenery, and the road is taken better care of because it’s not as well traveled.

Palin is scary, she kind of came out of nowhere like Freddy.

  22. ferries says:

Yes..That scenic photograph is beautiful thanks for the good sharing!!

  23. ferry says:

what a long journey was that? How much time it took to travel through the whole region? I think the ferry travel was the most frustrating part of your travelling though personally I like to do ferry crossings too often.
