Tossed

Posted on Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Dave!A good chunk of my day was spent sorting through boxes of junk in an attempt to toss out crap I no longer need. The problem is that I just can't find stuff I want to get rid of. Old concert T-shirts I'll never wear again... old magazines I'll never read again... even old VHS tapes that I can't even play anymore.

But the biggest offense is antiquated electronics I'll never use.

I have stuff that I barely even remember owning. Like my Atari Lynx (the very first color portable gaming system), my Apple Newton, my Atari 2600, and loads of other stuff that should have been tossed out ages ago...

Old Electronics

But I just can't bring myself to throw them away or sell them. Who knows... one day I might have this overwhelming urge to play "Mr. Do" on my ColecoVision. If I had tossed it out, then where would I be?

Hopefully I'll be able to let go of this crap eventually but, until then, I'll just have to continue to live with a closet that has no room for clothes in it.

  1. You’re junk stuff fits in a closet? That’s it? It doesn’t spill out all over the house, into the garage and out into the yard? Well, if that’s all you have, then dude, just keep it!

  2. Tonya says:

I did the same thing, and I was ruthless, with my Saturday.

  3. kilax says:

If you throw them away, you’ll be throwing away history. Don’t do it!

  4. Hilly says:

You know, I have a ton of those old Atari games downloaded on Xbox 360 but they just aren’t exactly the same.

  5. sizzle says:

    Clothes are over-rated anyhow. 😉

If you ever do get rid of them, I bet you could make some cash selling them on Ebay.

  6. adena says:

I know people who would KILL for the Atari.

  7. ChillyWilly says:

I’ve owned all of those things you found and are pictured and more. And as the years went on, I’ve only kept a few of them, but most, due to storage concerns, have been sold on eBay. There are a few things I wish I would have kept, but I’m sure if the desire came on strong enough, I could find it again… albeit at a higher price than what I sold it for.

The Lynx was pretty cool. I had one for years. My daughter still has hers.

And the Newton. I really liked mine and used it a lot. Owned 4 of them until I sold my last one in 2001. Ahead of it’s time.

  8. Lisa says:

Why don’t you auction the stuff off on eBay. There’s got to be someone who collects collects those things.

  9. Troy says:

    Hey Dave.

If you ever do want to get rid of any of your antiquated electronics let me know 🙂 Or sell them on EBay. Either way would work.

I think I have 3 working Atari 2600s, a bunch of pong games, a light gun game (along with pong), a sega master system, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, etc etc. I can’t let them go either.

Someday I will have a house for my crap!

  10. LOL You’re a pack rat! It takes a hard core relocation for you to give up your things – I can see it. Do a garage sale, at least you’ll get some money out of all those old but good condition junk. Or sell them on ebay – I swear by ebay.

I’ve been forced to move a couple of times – and man oh man, I learned to let go of a lot of stuff because of that.

  11. Karl says:

Ah, the Atari 2600. The last video game console I was any good at.

  12. Iron Fist says:

Good Lord, you owned a Newton? Not just a Mac Whore, I see, but an old school Apple whore.

And if you ever feel like a project to eat up some of your time, Make magazine has a guide on how to turn your old Atari 2600 into a retro gaming PC.

  13. mew says:

can’t bring myself to throw technology away.
i STILL have every system i’ve ever owned,
including my Vectrex which blew out a tube years
back, and my Tandy CoCo(TRS-80). ^__^

  14. claire says:

I know what you mean. I have a stack of old concert (or otherwise irreplaceable) tees taking up most of a duffel that sits on my floor. I would wear most of them, but they’re all on the verge of falling apart for good.

Also a bunch of other stuff, including pieces of electronics, that I can’t bring myself to part with yet. Mostly I try to focus on not accumulating more.

  15. Fig says:

You could make a lovely wall quilt with all those old concert T-shirts… and if you have enough, you could make some matching throw pillows!

  16. Chrissy says:

Wow! I remember thinking we were the coolest kids on the block because we were the first to have an ATARI system! LOL! Too funny!

I still have my old concert t-shirts, magazines, and even the ticket stubs from concerts and movies. It’s pretty bad. I have oodles and oodles of boxes. My poor husband is going to have to build me a bigger house just so I have a place to put all of my useless stuff! I keep saying that it’s all in the name of posterity and one day, future generations will thank me for keeping this junk!

  17. Eileen Dover says:

Just think… in fifty years, that stuff will be displayed in museums around the world and classified as antique.

  18. Tracy says:

Ebay is absolutely the way to go if you decide to part with your stuff. I was really surprised at how much I got for my Nintendo 64 and my early edition iPod. There will always be someone out there wanting to buy that kind of stuff, and I’m guessing that you probably took pretty good care of your electronics.

  19. kapgar says:

I’m still debating getting rid of my 2600 and PS2. Any takers? The 2600 may need a little work. Not too much. Just a spring so far as I can tell.

  20. whall says:

    Yup.

I still have my TI-994a, Commodore 64, Franklin Ace 1000 from my real youth. Then I have sun sparc 5, 10, and 20, and a Radio Shack TRS-80 (Scripsit rules!)

  21. Avitable says:

    I completely sympathize.

  22. Göran says:

The Newton would be fun to play around with!

  23. Dar says:

One word. Emulators. Even at that, I have a hard drive full of old games I had in rom format, but still don’t play them. Still, it takes up less space than the unit itself.

  24. You can’t toss things that I still drool over.

  25. Maybe donate it all to a museum so that you can visit it on occasion?

Oh, and? That Apple Newton? *SWOON* I think I’m in love….

With the Newton, not you. Ass….
