Road

Posted on Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Dave!My anticipation that today was going to suck ass somehow made it bearable.

Well, that, and knowing that at the end of the day I would be having dinner at David's Pizza.

The 3-hour drive to Spokane, which was kill-me-now-boring (as always) was made even worse this time because I got a late start and had to navigate the traffic pouring out of the city. For reasons I cannot begin to fathom, some of the stupidest drivers on earth tend to congregate on the single-lane road between Wenatchee (Apple Capitol of the World!) and Quincy (Best Corn on Earth!)...

Spokane Danger Zone

More than once along the way I wanted to drive my car off a cliff so that I wouldn't have to deal with the insanity anymore. Police cars patrol the stretch regularly, but don't seem to do anything about people driving 10mph under the speed limit, or weaving all over the road because they're talking on their mobile phone instead of paying attention to where they're driving. Dumbasses.

Dave Drive-By

And tomorrow I get to do it all over again on the way home!

I'm so excited that I could just shit myself.

But right now there's a new episode of Reaper on, so that will jut have to wait.

UPDATE: Oh great! My hotel's crappy internet connection keeps cutting out. This seems to be happening more and more when I travel anymore. If a hotel has a flakey internet connection, they shouldn't be able to advertise having internet at all, because it's not always true. Bastards.

I would suggest each time you are at a hotel with a bad internet connection you write them a letter informing them that because of said bad connection you will no longer use them on your travels. You might say in the letter that you require a decent internet connection in order to do business while traveling so that they see it not as a luxury but as a requirement for you (and other of their guests).

Then the hotels might work to improve their connections in the future and may even offer you discounts on future stays if you are somehow willing to try staying at their hotels again.

I make frequent trips, but not usually 3hr.
I go to san antonio (2hr trip for me) usually at least once a month, and I recently went to Kerrville (another 2hr trip). Then there’s the random trip to Oklahoma (5hr trip). In all instances, my trusty MP3 player seems to cut the trips down to near nothing.

Sometimes I get hooked on a specific artist or album and just go all the way through it. I imagine myself studying for a trivia or lyric game show and I need to know ALL the songs, words, albums, years, etc for that artist.

    It helps for me!

  3. kapgar says:

You really need to start a Web site that lists hotels and rates their Internet connection. You’d be famous. Hey wait! That’s now my idea! Wanna work on it together?

  4. RW says:

    Slow drivers…

  5. Avitable says:

I’m hoping Reaper can continue to be entertaining, although it’s already threatening to fall into the Monster of the Week routine.

  6. sizzle says:

    bastards!

note to self: do not drive that stretch of road, no matter how alluring the corn and apples seem.

  7. Bec says:

See that’s why I like living in a tiny country. Trains were invented for this and the trains go everywhere worth going. They still doen’t have net connections though (like they promised) grumble whinge!)

  8. Mia says:

I think everybody in this here state of Idaho drive like that. I compare it to elderly sex. Slow and purpose driven.

There are days when I miss my Portland traffic.

  9. Just when I’m almost free from the tube (and I make the mistake of mentioning that on your blog) I caught the first episode of Reaper. Sadly, I ended up passing out during last night’s episode thanks to this lame stomach flu, but I bet it was great.

  10. Robin says:

It’s the price you pay for the best apples and corn.

  11. Hilly says:

I get five lanes of highway and STILL call people fucktards and want to run them over! I just cannot imagine one lane of that crap. *shudder*

  12. Miss Britt says:

My comment was going to be “RW is going to love this…”

But. Well. He beat me. 🙂

  13. Cavan says:

I’ve decided that all the stupid drivers in the world have some sort of conspiracy to congregate around you. And me. Nothing worse than driving to work every day on a long, curvy parkway you can’t pass on behind people who insist on doing 45 kmh in a 60 zone.

  14. ChillyWilly says:

I’ve had Washington Apples in Wenatchee (back in the mid 80’s). Had Walla Walla Onions. Never had Quincy Corn. Must try them next time I’m there.

  15. Whit says:

    Cap that bitch Lil’ D!

  16. bogup says:

There should be light rail between Wenatchee and Spokane, don’t-cha-think?
Oh, and with high capacity internet service…

  17. Zhu says:

I’ve never seen a decent internet connexion in an hotel !

Driving in North America is still a bliss compared to Europe. At least, you have double lanes… and people don’t think the speed limit is just a suggestion. I hate driving in France.

  18. Neil says:

I’ve also noticed the crappy wireless connections in hotels. Forget the mints on the pillows and spend some money on updating your system!
