Dave!Well crap. Mike Wieringo has died.

I'm a regular reader of his blog, and loved the way he treated his fans to numerous sketches and drawings on a regular basis. So imagine my shock and sadness when today's entry was a notice that Mike had passed away.

I realize that 99% of people are going to be saying "Mike Wier-who?!?" and have no idea who he is, but to comic book fans, this is a crushing blow. Mike Wieringo was an incredibly gifted artist who I envied on just about every possible level for his talent. If I were to describe his drawing style, I think "economical" sums it up nicely. The guy had this uncanny ability to use just the exact amount of line-work necessary in his art, and was never compelled to scribble in anything unneeded to camouflage his shortcomings... mainly because he didn't have any shortcomings. This stylistic approach gave him a beautifully clean style of drawing, which he enhanced with an exaggerated perspective that made everything he drew leap off the page...

Mike Wieringo Fantastic Four
Mike's Art for Fantastic Four #509

My favorite work by Wieringo was his collaboration with Mark Waid on The Fantastic Four. I treasured every issue they worked on, and consider their run to be among the best FF stories ever made... right up there with the Lee/Kirby originals. I've re-read my trade paperback collections of those issues numerous times, and it is never lost on me just how much humor, imagination, and humanity that Wieringo managed to inject into those stories. Boy will he be missed.

I'm feeling lazy, so it must be time for... One Sentence Commentary!

One Sentence Commentary!

The new iMacs... Sublimely beautiful, fairly powerful, and ultimately well thought-out.

The new Apple keyboard... Initially confusing, ultimately delicious... I love mine!

Karl Rove is retiring... Good riddance, you evil fucker.

John From Cincinnati cancelled... Did anybody like this horrible mess of a show?*

Merv Griffin dies... "So I came to Europe to kill... and it's really worked out very well for me!"

SCO doesn't own Unix... Sucks to be you, losers!

Ta dah!

Ugh. I am really, really behind in my blog reading. And my email. And my work. And my comics. And my television shows (BURN NOTICE!!). And my snail-mail. And my laundry. And my life, I guess. Where does the time go?

*And wasn't that like the WORST season-ending episode ever? I still think that John Monad was actually Shaun Yost from an alternate-reality future with a scrambled brain, but that's just the comic book geek in me talking.

  1. The Chad says:

I loved John From Cincinnati. Even that show was unbelievably confusing, I thought it was awesome. Seriously, this show looked incredibly stratigically planned out, but just like Deadwood, it ends with so many unanswered questions.

  2. whit says:

Too bad about Mike and Merv, should have been Karl.

  3. Roberta says:

Merv Griffin died? I must have missed the memo…

  4. Dave2 says:

Chad… I liked it enough to keep watching, but was really bothered that it just spun so badly out of control near the end. A parade?!? All that mystique and foreshadowing for a PARADE?!? I was really into the symbology that was starting to happen, but I never got the sense that the show was headed anywhere. Even if they expected that a second season would happen, I can’t believe that all they gave us at the end was a bad recap and A PARADE!

Whit… Karl Rove died years ago and sold his soul to Satan so he could come back and become the presidential advisor. It’s one of the few explanations that make any sense.

    Roberta… Sadly, ’tis true. 🙁

  5. Hilly says:

Yeah fortunately, I was behind on my Tivo when “John From Cincinnati” came out so I got to hear about how much it sucked and just deleted it all without watching….ahhhh, the power of being too busy :). “Burn Notice” rocks it though, seriously.

Anyway, hope you catch up on your shizzle. I will not email you for a few days so I don’t have to wait for a reply! 😉

  6. Michael says:

SCO: The new face of corporate greed.
SCO: Ironically once (and as I understand it, still is) a Linux distributor. It’s OKAY if they do it, see?
SCO: Went from relatively mediocre in 2002, to enjoying a brief time with the big boys of Nasdaq in 2004, to nearly being destroyed after Friday’s ruling.

  7. Baak says:

Did you see Merv estimated he made $70-$80 million dollars from the Jeopardy Jingle alone? He whipped it out on a piano in a few minutes.

Kept the rights to it. Smart guy. 😉

  8. Suzy says:

Mike makes a post on the 10th, talks about all the money the rewiring is going to cost him and dies what, two days later? Three? Normally you say something to the effect that, “Hey I just spoke with him 2 days ago.” And you’re just one of a few that can say that. But with blogs, all of his fans can say they just read his last post two days ago. It makes one’s life all the more inclusive.

I don’t know anything about comic book drawing but his stuff looked amazing. RIP.

  9. Göran says:

Sad to read about Mike Wieringo.
Internet is an amazing place for dealing with grief though. It´s really heartwarming to read about how people come through for friends and family.

  10. teebopop says:

    I totally love “Burn Notice.”

Is the female sidekick (last name Pfeiffer – first name escapes me at 3:51 am) the sister of Michelle Pfeiffer? I think she might be.

Anyways, great show. I love the fact that there is always two things going on at once, his finding out who burned him and whatever case he’s solving at the same time.

Love the banter and he’s so hot. He’s got it all, sense of humor, good looks, sensitivity, and the ability to just say “fuck it” and do what needs to be done.

    Excellent show.

  11. Michelle says:

I felt the same way about Steven Hughes when he died much too early. I love his comics. *sigh*

  12. kapgar says:

Here’s my one sentence… what the hell is/was John From Cincinnati?

  13. Avitable says:

Ringo’s Flash run with Waid was my favorite, but that’s mainly because I’m a Flash fan more than anything else.

He was a vegetarian in great shape, too – not at all the typical stereotype, and that makes it even more tragic, in my opinion.

  14. NYCWD says:

I’m not surprised about John from Cincinnati.

Although I liked the characters, the actual story left a lot to be desired after the fourth episode.

  15. Wayne says:

I learn so much from your blog.

  16. paul says:

John from Cincinnati was disappointing to say the least. I was out after the fourth episode.

  17. ajooja says:

I liked the first couple of episodes of “John From Cincinnati,” but I really hated a couple of episodes toward the end.

My wife loved it, so we kept watching.

I will keep my delight to myself when I tell her the news. 🙂

  18. I don’t have a clue about the shows you’ve mentioned, but I DO “know” Merv. OMG! I used to watch his show with my grandparents. They had a COLOR TV! and we only had a black and white, so we loved to get to stay overnight with them. Anyway, Merv was one smart guy.

I’m very sorry to hear about Mike Wieringo’s passing. It is sad that the world loses another great artist.

As far as Karl’s “passing”??? Good riddance nasty-ass Turd Blossom. However, I think that Dick Cheney should get the most evil-fucker-ever award!

  19. sue says:

    Love “Burn Notice”!

  20. Mia says:

I don’t know squat about comics but I can appreciate good art and an awesome person when I see it…After reading his blog for a bit, I’m sure he will be missed both for who he was and for what he did.

Next on the agenda…what the heck is John From Cincinnati?

  21. I really liked John from Cincinnati. It was different and certainly a little hard to follow in places but I still wanted to find out more and always looked forward to each episode. I admit I was rather hooked on finding out the who/what/where regarding John but, unfortunately, now we’ll never know.

    Bugger.

  22. Tracy Lynn says:

Didn’t watch J from C but LOVE Burn Notice. I’m busy catching up as we speak.

  23. sandra says:

Am now intrigued by the new Apple keyboard…

  24. bogup says:

For those not familiar with the genius of Mike Wieringo just Google for images with his name. His talents were enormous and his artwork awesome and prolific. He died much too young @ 44 years young.
May his soul rest in peace.

  25. Diesel says:

Merv Griffin will always be the killer in The Man With 2 Brains to me.

And I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you will NOT like Burn Notice. The acting is lame and the writing is worse. It pops up on our TiVo sometimes and my wife and I call it “Bum Notice.” That’s what we call it now when one of us gives warning that we’re about to fart.

  26. Belinda says:

Will watch Burn Notice simply because I’m still grieving that “Touch of Evil” or “Touched By Evil” or whatever it was show of his that got cancelled. The one where he’d been shot in the head so had no more inhibition or fear. Awesome.

And, teebopop – If you’re talking about the female lead in BN, it’s Gabrielle Anwar, no?

  27. Lewis says:

Don’t be sure that the evil fucker is gone. How about chairman of the RNC? Or, worse yet, how about President? Now there’s a repulsive thought that makes even a cherry popsicle look good at. (By the way, cherry is one of my favorite flavors….as in pie with homemade ice cream.)

  28. Dan says:

Holy crap, Mike Wieringo died!? How did I miss this? That is very sad.
