Day Twelve: Mykonos, Greece

Posted on Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Dave!Mykonos is a swanky resort island for the rich and famous of the Mediterranean. When I read about it in my tour brochure, I didn't think it sounded very interesting, so I instead selected an excursion called "Magnificent Delos." I figured anything with "magnificent" in the title was worth my valuable time.

Delos, as it turns out, is an entirely separate island about 35 minutes off the coast of Mykonos. It was an island devoted to the god Apollo, and a massive city sprang up to service all the worshippers that arrived on a pilgrimage. At one time, it was probably pretty incredible. But now... not so much.

I'd go so far as to say it was boring. Boring, boring, boring. Yet another busted city with a bunch of reconstructed crap mucking up the place. Not very magnificent at all...

Delos, Greece

The strange thing about Delos is that the people there seemed to be obsessed with penises. There are busted penis statues around, and the local museum has a display case devoted to penis carvings that were salvaged from the site...

Delos Penises

After I returned from the not-so-magnificent Delos, it was time to explore Mykonos Town proper.

Turns out that this is where I should have been spending my time all along, because the city is just cool. There are dozens and dozens of narrow little streets that were intentionally made into a maze to confuse the pirates that used to plague the city. Exploring all these tiny little alleyways is big fun, even though it didn't leave a lot of room to take very good photos...

Mykonos Alley

Looking across the harbor, you can see "new town" which is starting to look a little like Santorini, but without the cliffs...

Mykonos New Town

And more cats. There are cats all over Greece. My favorite was this cool-looking calico that I'd have liked to take home with me...

Mykonos Cat

And that's all she wrote for Greece...

Any guy who likes cats is “okay” in my book!

We’ve three cats and I still find myself wishing I could bring home the occasional stray. However, I’ve plenty of eccentricities without adding a home overrun with felines to my list of quirks.

Besides, there is an old proverb: “A cat is always on the wrong side of the door.” And, believe me, it’s TRUE!

  2. RW says:

Crikey… even penises have penises over there. Ok well I’m pretty intimidated right about here…

  3. birdie2u says:

(…Uh, did you happen to notice that I completely resisted the temptation to comment on the penis exhibit? That deserves a kudo, don’t you think?)

  4. Tonya says:

    That IS a gorgeous cat!

  5. Lela says:

    Wow! That was a lot of penises (a gaggle, a flock–I wonder what you call it–a bunch, a school . . .

  6. shari says:

Dave’s Excellent Penis Adventure. That could be the chapter title in your tell-all book. Beautiful photos again — thank you!!

  7. Jeff says:

Multitudes of penises and pussies. Sounds like ancient Greece to me.

  8. aquababie says:

    that’s a bunch of peni! LOL i know that’s not a word but i couldn’t resist.

i’ve been thinking of getting a cat lately. i hope my dog and ferret can adjust.

  9. webmiztris says:

how beautiful! I am so jealous of you, dave…gosh.

well, except for that penis place. that is just weird.

  10. Hilly says:

That’s way too many penii for me, seriously.

I’ll take the cat and the scenery any day though!

  11. bogup says:

Next thing ya know there will be a button made with a salad background and, get this, a penis in it! Amazing.

  12. Avitable says:

Dave, you like penises! You should have loved Mykonos.

  13. Dustin says:

Why would you want to confuse the pirates? Wouldn’t that only increase the raping and pillaging? Crazy greeks.

  14. Bre says:

That’s why I can’t run away to live a life of luxury in Greece – I would be permanently lost!

  15. delmer says:

Some of those penises have been hard for well over 4 hours … I’d say it’s time to call a doctor.

  16. Laurence says:

    What a strange obsession ! :-S

This cat is so cute ! 😉

  17. Beth says:

    A-ha – penises and pussys – a great combination!!

I’m so jealous that you are seeing all these great places – I’ve got vacation envy….

  18. bogup says:

BTW, given the number of cigarette butts around him, that cat must be a chain smoker. Whew…

  19. kilax says:

I cannot believe how gorgeous the white and blue houses are! Will that photo go into the artifical duck store print gallery? 😉

  20. Tracy says:

How many constitutes a peck of peckers? I think the people of Delos may know…

  21. yellojkt says:

The blue they painted the town is really pretty, but they could use a lot fewer penises (peni?)

  22. Dave2 says:

Birdie… I think I’m more of a “dog person” but some cats (like this one) would have me changing my mind.

RW… As well you should be… did you see the SIZE of those things?!

Birdie… Well, at least until you commented about not commenting! 🙂

Tonya… Even better, this cat had total attitude. I love that in a cat.

    Lela… A Flock of Penises… wasn’t that a new-wave band in the 80’s?

Shari… I have a feeling that people would be really, really disappointed if I were to title my book as such, because certain expectations would not be met…

Jeff… Yes, well, those Greeks do know how to party…

Aquababie… Cats and dogs and ferrets? Add in a bird and a goldfish and it’s time to build an ark! 🙂

Webmiztris… No more weird than seeing a McDonalds, but that’s the world we live in! 😀

Hilly… Well, the scenery IS hard to resist. It’s not hard to believe that Apollo is watching over Greece with the incredible weather they have here.

Bogup… You never know. This is a pretty strange blog…

Avitable… I dunno… unless you are making a gang-bang video, I definitely think that there is such a thing as too much penis…

Dustin… Perhaps they were hoping that the pirates would get lost and miss their boat so they would have to stay?? You’re right… this doesn’t make much sense. Besides, pirates rule!

Bre… But who would want to be found? Getting lost would be a good thing here!

Delmer… Or start bragging to your friends…

Laurence… This cat was very cool. I cannot help but wonder how he lives there on the beach…

Beth… Save your pennies! It took me two years to afford this, but it was worth the effort…

Bogup… Yes, but he’s on the patch, so I think he’ll be kicking the habit soon.

Kilax… Maybe… a lot of people like the Santorini churches, so I’ll probably at least be adding those.

Tracy… Six. Six penises in a peck of peckers!

Yellojkt… The penises were not in Mykonos, they were on the neighboring island of Delos, so it’s all good.

  23. Patty says:

Those penis lovers remind me of some photos of Japan my hubby had of a town that celebrates fertility with penis costumes and statues! Ha!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos! Santorini looks awesome.

  24. NYC Watchdog says:

I would have run at the sight of the first broken phallic statue. They may have been Penis eaters for all you know. You’re a brave man.

I would be totally down with the maze town though… and would have gone so far as to play a pirate… all about pillaging and plundering and stuff.

  25. serap says:

I’m so jealous of the lovely weather you are having, its warm here, but really grey and rainy. The kitty looks like it needs to be tickled under the chin to me!

  26. Nancy says:

The cat is gorgeous, the setting ~ timeless and the penis’! LOL, the funniest thing is that I took an impression of my friend’s erect penis years ago and poured it up in stone. Long story…Well not that long…But anyway, who knew he would have had a place in the society of Delos!

  27. the photos are beautiful but I just cant get past the penis carvings…SOMEONE had egos back in the day, eh?

  28. sizzle says:

i like the pirate bit. i love learning those bits of history when i visit places. calico kitty is a cutie. she looks like she would be a good companion.

  29. ChillyWilly says:

Gives new meaning to the term “penis envy”
