Hours

Posted on Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

Dave! It's 10:00pm now. I've been working since I got up at 4:30am. What is that... like 17 hours? 18 hours? Too many hours, that's for sure. I should be in bed, but the idea of missing my first blog entry in over two years compels me to forge onward. There's something kind of twisted about that, but I'm too tired to figure out what that might be.

The drive over to Seattle was entertaining because the road had a nice frost on it. Cars were sliding wide around corners, swiping guard-rails, and generally being stupid. Driving in these conditions is not rocket science, but you'd be surprised just how long it takes for people to catch on that you can't drive like a maniac and not pay the price.

Yet the highlight of my drive happened just three minutes after I pulled out of my driveway. Some moron ran the red light leading to the highway... right in front of a police officer. That alone was pretty ballsy.

But not enough for this guy.

He had a momentary delusional state where he thought outrunning a cop on an open highway was a good idea. He punched the gas for a few seconds then must have realized "uhhhhh... I'm in a beat-up old van so he can probably catch me in his shiny new police car" and pulled over.

Which is kind of a pity, because I would have loved to see that one play out. I'm not sure if that makes me a bad person, but a high-speed chase on frosty roads sounds like entertainment to me!

And, speaking of entertainment, how totally sweet was Veronica Mars last night? Her determination to get back Lilly's necklace resulted in an ending that summarized everything I love about that show. The completely detached way that Veronica drove off after everything went down just proves that Kristen Bell kicks ass in a way most actors can only dream of. You felt that one.

Now I think I'll let VH-1's "Hundred Greatest Songs of the 80's" play me to sleep...

I watched the Top 40 Greatest Metal Songs the other night on VH-1 with Sebastian Bach and fell asleep somewhere around number 15. There is some weird shit on VH-1, at least over here.

I’m assuming the cop pulled the guy over. Was he laughing or reaching for his piece when he got out of his car?

  2. Peggy Archer says:

    I HATE my current schedule!

I’m missing Veronica Mars, and I don’t know how to program my old VCR or my new DVR.

Dammit. Dave, you’re just going to have to keep posting recaps.

  3. serap says:

Oh dear Dave, I have to tell you that insomnia coupled with your compulsion to blog every day… doesn’t sound too good. Take it easy, don’t blog for just one day… it won’t hurt I promise πŸ™‚

  4. Avitable says:

Richard Greco was a strange addition to the cast. He looks like a crackhead.

  5. Rob says:

Im so mad at Dish Network. They dont offer the CW in my area for some dumb reason. So i am stuck with downloading Miss Mars off Bittorrent.

  6. Jeff says:

I’m bitter because I just got bopped $100 for expired tabs but meanwhile there’s never a cop around when someone blows by you at 100 mph. So it’s nice to see some justice once in a while. I’m petty that way.

  7. Miss Britt says:

I have that same “I can’t neglect my blog! Even if I am behind on work and sleep and everything else that REALLY matters”

Which, shouldn’t really make you feel BETTER. But at least not alone. πŸ™‚

  8. ms. sizzle says:

this ice business is new to me. i’ve learned my lesson. and i REALLY need an ice scraper. stat!

  9. suze says:

I think that was one of my favourite episodes this season. And how happy am I that a Canadian broadcaster is playing Veronica Mars this season. So happy I’m wearing my over the moon face!!

  10. Rick says:

Dude, have you ever considered moving to this side of the mountains? Seems you spend way too much time commuting.

  11. Laurence says:

I’m lost in admiration for someone who wake up at 4:30am.
    I don’t sleep a lot but I never wake up at 4:30am.

    Take a break, Dave… 18 hours of work !!!

    And FROST in november… wow, wow… It’s early, isn’t it ?

IWTWVM (I want to watch veronica mars)

  12. Kyle I says:

“Driving in these conditions is not rocket science, but you’d be surprised just how long it takes for people to catch on that you can’t drive like a maniac and not pay the price.”

We deal with that all winter long in CO (it makes it even better that my job is a firefighter). They usually have Texas plates (or anyplace else that lacks snow) or rental cars.

  13. diane says:

It’s funny how my own recent battles with insomnia seem to be leaking in a major way into what I’m writing for NanoWrimo. Um, no, I’m not calling it “Insomnia” and it doesn’t involve Robert De Niro.
Anyway, I think I have the reverse of you–I tend to finally FALL ASLEEP at 4:30am and then struggle to get up.
I was going to say perhaps if we slept together it would balance out but that sounds verrrrry much not how I meant it. Rather, our two sleep habits combined would make for a full night of rest. :o)

  14. Sayuri says:

    furiously downloading Veronica Mars….

    HURRY THE FECK UP! Arghhh!

  15. Erin says:

V snatching her necklace off that little cow was pretty sweet, but the best thing about “President Evil” was (finally!) ample facetime with Lamb. Oh the Lambanity! best line of the night: “Hey, Good Looking, I’ll be back to pick you up later!”

  16. Melissa says:

I think I’m going to finally catch VM. I hope it’s not too late in the season. I’m hoping over the break or during Christmas to rent or buy I think the first few seasons. I just keep hearing awesome stuff about it. πŸ™‚ I think it’ll be a show I like. It seems right up my ally. πŸ˜‰

  17. Troy says:

I didn’t know there were enough “greatest hits” from the 80’s to make a “100 best” list. πŸ™‚

As for slippery conditions I’ve heard that we might be getting snow here tomorrow morning. Not fun.

  18. I missed posting yesterday, but I believe that the fact I could disappear any moment like Keyser SΓΆze is part of my charm. πŸ˜‰

So, what did you think about ‘Living on a Prayer’ taking the whole 80’s shebang? Sure, it’s an anthem, but pales in comparison to ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ and, oh, just about everything else ever put out from ’80-’83.

  19. Kapha says:

    Twisted Sister?

  20. Wayne Hall says:

Well I, for many, am glad you decided to blog on. And I’m also glad you unintentionally reminded me to listen to more 80’s music.

I’m not sure why, but when I started to read “Yet the highlight of my drive…” I was positive you were lacing the paragraph with your usual amount of sarcasm, and was fully expecting a monumental and moving description of how badly someone needed one of your Dumbasses books. I had already prepared myself for a story about some great combination of a bluetooth-headset-sporting, non-parenting, wonder woman who cut you off and then looked at you funny. I was also certain Bad Monkey was going to be involved somehow with a Zombified Liz Hurley .

But, alas… no sarcasm. It was actually an honest-to-goodness highlight in the positive sense! What a great and unexpected portion of your blog!

  21. Roberta says:

I really need to just start watching Veronica Mars… I only hear good things. I don’t know how/when to start. When I’ve tuned in, I’m just confused enough that it doesn’t engage me.
The 80’s. I was there. I do not know one person who liked “I Can’t Go For That” by the oddly gay Hall and Oates. It was like number 6. Ridiculous.

  22. kapgar says:

That was a sweet ending and not one that I saw coming. Gotta love VM.

Sorry this is so late. I’m finally catching up on my blog reading.
