Roundtrip

Posted on Thursday, September 7th, 2006

Dave!Five months ago I was going to quit blogging. Between the horrors of finding a hosting company that wouldn't screw me and the never-ending onslaught of hate mail and spam I was receiving each day... I had just had enough. Blogging wasn't fun anymore and I wanted out.

But then a little boy stopped to tie his show in front of my car one day and everything changed.

This morning I was driving on that exact same road and came upon a cat that was laying in the middle of my lane. A black cat. I slowed down thinking he would move out of the way as I approached, but he didn't. He looked up at me until I came to a stop, then started licking himself. He wasn't going anywhere.

"Huh." I thought. "Perhaps this is a sign to have a break from blogging. Maybe I should be taking the time to stop and lick myself?" (errr... metaphorically speaking). So I swerved around the cat and continued onward, all the while thinking that maybe a nice vacation from Blogography was a good idea. I'd take the rest of the year off and return to my daily writing on January 1st.

But then I read on Karl's blog that he has declared a "Quitting Moratorium" and my blogging vacation was ruined.

Thanks a lot Karl.

Later in the day I had work in Spokane. But when I got there, things weren't working out as planned, so I had to turn around and come back home. This basically meant that I just drove a 6-hour roundtrip for a slice of pizza.

Most people would be upset by this. But it was a slice of the Best Pizza In The Known Universe, so I wasn't upset at all. I once drove an eleven-hour roundtrip to visit a Hard Rock Cafe, so crazy stuff like this is nothing new to me.

Except now I'm tired and need to go to bed.

No DaveToon for you.

no such thing as too long a drive for good pizza, good pie or good sex. right?

  2. Dave2 says:

I would drive 6 hours roundtrip for a slice of Da Vinci pizza from David’s Pizza.

I would drive 12 hours roundtrip for a slice of my grandmother’s apple pie.

I would drive 24 hours roundtrip for good sex.*

    * Heck, I’d drive 24 hours roundtrip for BAD sex too… I just don’t want to sound desperate.**

** Though the fact that I am not willing to drive over 24 hours for sex kind of implies an aloofness that belies any hint of desperation.***

*** Wait, what were we talking about again??

  3. Kapha says:

You can lick yourself? Dammit, Dave, you have *got* to get on Letterman!

Seriously though, you could always try posting every other day, every odd day, every day you really feel like it, every day that ends in “y” – no wait…

You don’t want it to become *work* – and we’re not going to hunt you down and force you to blog every day – well, maybe not for a month or two.

Has it become an obsession with having to post every day? Could you *not* post every day? And not even say “I didn’t post today…”?

I’ve been there with other similar stuff. I felt immense unseen pressure to post a weekly summary with snapshots from films in a game I’ve been playing for years because it was great fun at first. Then there was a point where it was taking me a couple of hours to put this together every week and was starting to drive me nuts – it drove me nuts if I *did* or *did not* do it. Finally I decided to break at a major milestone and modified the way I did things. Worked great.

There’s a subtle difference and it’s funny how easily it can become an obsession and/or compulsive thing.

I love reading your blog – it’s hilarious, entertaining, invigorating – and the comments are more of the same. But I for one wouldn’t want you to feel compelled to blog every single day if it’s stressing you out in the least!

    Just my two cents. 🙂

[P.S. lol! I got so hooked diving into jodi’s “faster pussycat… type! type!” and reading your follow-up comment, that I forgot to post my frickin’ comment!]

  4. Dave2 says:

And I got so wrapped up in your comment that I forgot to go to bed.

    Thanks a lot.

When I am walking around like Zombies Ate My Brain tomorrow from lack of sleep, I’m blaming you.

  5. Kapha says:

Ack! I’m coming down with blogitis!

I just read the Zombies Ate My Brain entry (and laughed out loud – AND want the T-shirt!), followed by the Genius entry (first time a forehead has ever made me laugh!), followed by the…

    Brain… Brain…

    :: Munching sounds ::

    Must… sleep…

  6. serap says:

No DaveToon??? What the hell?? Do we mean nothing to you?!

On another note, I reckon you could circle england in a 24 hour round trip, what do you reckon? (you’d have to forget scotland and wales I’m afraid). You’d probably get some good sex up north too! Oh, hang on Liz lives in the southeast (as do I of course!)… maybe you’d get a good pizza up north? Who knows!

  7. Well, I guess that makes Karl my new hero. A few suggestions: Why don’t you have a guest blogger for a few days so you can have a break? Or, barring that, please quit driving down that road.

  8. Dave2 says:

    Zombies are funny.

Bah, I don’t need a break… I just need to stop reading so much into lazy cats with a death-wish. 🙂

I’d imagine you could fly ’round England in 24 hours… if you didn’t stop to see anything except petrol stations. Perry and I had to wait for Hard Rock Cafes to open, but managed to fly through England and a bit of Wales on a Hard Rock Run (skipping Edinburgh) in just over two days. It was quite a trip.

  9. Avitable says:

Now if the cat spoke to you and told you to stop blogging, that might be a sign.

You could just have guest bloggers for weeks at a time.

  10. Laurence says:

Thanks Karl ! Because Blogography is a drug for me !
Dave, do you realize that if you stopped Blogography in avril 2006, you wouldn’t never have known me ? Me, in any case, I realize that I would never have known you. That makes me sad… REALLY ! 🙁

I don’t want to finish my comment with a negative thought… I will get going again on your answer to Jody… “You would drive 24h roundtrip for sex.”… Are you sure that you would drive… or fly ? Because it’s an 15-16h flight between Seattle-Paris !!! 😀

  11. Laurence says:

    Oh mon Dieu ! I don’t want to believe that I wrote that… I can’t get over it !!! o_O

  12. Walt says:

    Dave:

The idea of people sending you hate mail is nuts! Spam I understand, idiots love to share their crap but hate mail that’s an entirely different level of stupidity and wasted time.

Best of luck in whatever you decide with your blog. It’s clearly been a great project and everyone loves the DaveToons. If burn out is near a good long break is always well deserved. I think your big fans will wait for DaveToon to return from a break.

No DaveToon! You’re turning into the Toon Nazi! I imagined DaveToon licking himself.

  13. adena says:

    You toon nazi.

    😀

Oh, and there will BE no blog breaks, dammit.

  14. Dave2 says:

I think the cat was speaking to me telepathically. WITCH CAT!!!

A 15-16 hour flight is 30-32 hours roundtrip… that’s more than 24 hours! Wow… stuff like this is easier for Jack Bauer. 🙂

Hate mail sucks ass, but anytime you write crazy stuff on the internet, you’re bound to upset somebody… even if you don’t mean to. 🙁

Yeah… it’s really too bad, because I was looking forward to drawing a toon of me licking myself.

  15. Jeff says:

For some dumb reason I was expecting you to say that on your way home you found that the cat had been run over by a car, and now you blame yourself for not shooing it out of the way and to make up for it you have vowed to NEVER quit blogging or drawing toons!

That didn’t happen by chance did it?

  16. Karl says:

Wow, I must have declared that moratorium in the nick of time! I keep hearing about this glorious pizza. When I finally make my way up there, I’m demanding you take me for a slice or two. Don’t make me hold a cat to your head.

  17. Dave2 says:

Well, from TequilaCon in Portland, it’s an 11 hour roundtrip… so you must have a higher allowance for pizza runs than I do!!

  18. kapgar says:

Was the cat still licking himself when you were on the return leg of your trip?

  19. Dave2 says:

Something tells me he finished in the 9 hours I was gone… it wasn’t that big of a cat.

  20. Bre says:

Thank goodness for Karl! And thank goodness you didn’t try to lick yourself while driving!

  21. oujod says:

No matter how bad pizza or sex is, it’s never really bad. Or something like that.

I think it only applies to guys, though 😀

Damn it, D! I just found your blog yesterday and today I find out you thought about a hiatus!

  22. Laurence says:

30-32h… Too bad !!! That really is a shame !!! That came very close to doing… 😀

  23. Dave2 says:

Licking while driving is probably more dangerous than drinking while driving?

I think gals just like to say that… make no mistake, they like “pizza” just as much as the rest of us!

I’m sure to be a disapointment anyway… only Jack Bauer can go for 24 hours straight! 🙂

  24. kapgar says:

Well, you never know. He may have enjoyed it that much. Never underestimate the pleasure level of kitty self bathing. Nothing could stop my cats. A dog could be chasing them and my cats would stop to tongue bathe themselves if the moment felt right.

  25. sultana says:

Just like Laurence, I would have never met you if you had quit blogging. That’s a sad thought 🙁 On the other hand, an overworked Dave is an even sadder thought, so if you need to–take a break! Come back soon though. Cuz we loves us our Dave and might be forced to come all the way to Washington to find you 😛

  26. Laurence says:

Jack Bauer scares me. I think he act quickly… very quickly… too much !!! And it is not a good thing… No… Forget Jack… It is not a good idea ! 😀

  27. Neil says:

Karl saves the day (send him some pizza!)

  28. kilax says:

Dave, don’t leave us! Just take whatever break you need and come back! 🙂

  29. Dave2 says:

    Karl won’t let me.

I’ll tell you what… I’ll buy him a drink when he shows up to TequilaCon.

  30. Erin says:

We owe Karl! Your posts are one of the highlights of my day. I would miss you if you quit posting. And where’s my DaveToon? Did he drive away, looking for sex, pizza or pie? Bad DaveToon for deserting Dave in his time of need!

  31. Hilly says:

Oh good, Karl has magical powers now. As long as you aren’t leaving blogging, then I can stop crying ;).

  32. Javajabber says:

You are FIRST on my list of blogs to read (well, okay, so it’s alphabetical, but if it wasn’t, I’d still put you as #1). So, if you stopped blogging you’d throw off my whole daily ritual.

We don’t want that to happen, now do we??????

Also, who did you finally settle on as a web host? Am looking for one of my own. And I’m overwhelmed with choices.

Finally, (swear) you ARE a toon-Nazi! I so loved your guest post on Snackie’s site!

    …peace

  33. sheryl says:

Little kids, lounging cats… have any burning bushes spoken to you lately?

  34. Ben says:

I hoped he tied his shoe as well. 🙂

  35. Cindy says:

I once drove over seven hours round trip (across an international border) for bbq.

    I totally understand.
