Sidewalk

Posted on Thursday, August 17th, 2006

Dave!As I was walking through the University of Washington at Tacoma campus on my way to see the Chihuly chandelier in their library, I noticed a bunch of sidewalk drawings. Many of them are really good, which makes me even more disgusted when I see some stupid bitch pushing her baby stroller right over the top of them, or some douchebag asshole skateboarding through the art. There's plenty of room to walk around the drawings, so I simply cannot understand what their damage is. I guess some people are born assholes, and there's just no other explanation for it.

Here are three of my favorites...

Sidewalk Art

Sidewalk Art

Sidewalk Art

I counted a couple dozen pieces so, if you're in the Tacoma area, you should check it out.

    Those are awesome!

You should expect that kind of behavior on a university campus. Respect-101 isn’t really part of the curriculum.

  2. Karl says:

Wow, the first one in particular really strikes me. I love impressionism. Most cool, aside from the idiots dissing the art.

  3. Mooselet says:

Can’t for the life of me remember where I was – Boston? – when I saw someone creating sidewalk art with chalk. It was amazing. And to think the most I ever did was draw hopscotch squares.

  4. Kapha says:

Heh – I was struck by the last one in particular, especially by the stark black line through it.

This was before I read that they were sidewalk art – dang, they’re REALLY good! Better than 7000% of other stuff that passes for art in “galleries”.

Never had someone else walk into my hotel room before, but have had the other-way-’round experience…

Also one time we went to our room only to discover it really messed up – the door open, sheets/towels everywhere – and was shocked to discover *every single room on the floor was the same!* At first we thought they were being cleaned! Seemed the domestic service had had enough of management…

The funniest bit was when we came back down to the front desk, told them about it, and said we weren’t interested in the room anymore. The *Manager* thought we were lying!!! He just couldn’t believe it!! I resisted the urge to insert the card key in him, and managed to keep my composure long enough to give him one of my Dad’s “I am now exactly five seconds from keeking your @$$ from here to Sunday” looks before he quietly complied. It takes a lot to get me mad like that, but he had an obvious knack for it.

I could fully understand why the hired help told him to shove it (non-verbally) based on my brief encounter with him, and only wished I could have seen his reaction (and had it on film) when he went upstairs and saw the rooms for himself… 😉

  5. These are incredible! I especially love the geisha.

I wish I didn’t but I totally believe a dumbass (who has bred!) would run over art without a second thought. It’s sad that people miss/destroy the beauty that surrounds them every day.

  6. EDDIE says:

    Too beautiful to walk on…

  7. Kyra says:

Did you know they’re starting to hole side-walk-chalk-art competitions all over the place too? I think it would be a kick to attend or participate in! Of course, there are no darn sidewalks here, so I’d have to FLY somewhere to draw on a sidewalk *sigh*.

  8. Laurence says:

I really like art in all its forms. Especially ephemeral art… I find it poetic. 🙂
I am absolutely agree with you concerning all stupid persons who don’t respect this. (Unfortunately, when people are born stupids, they dead stupids. I really would like to think that things will work out with times… But it is wrong…) 🙁

  9. sultana says:

It must be time for Respect for Art for Dumbasses 🙂

  10. SJ says:

A CITY with SIDEWALKS, and people creating ART on them. Sounds like heaven to me (minus the dumbass factor).
