Thrash

Posted on Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

Dave!♫  With a rebel yell, she cried "more, more, more!"  ♫

As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a woman totally rocking out in her car. She was thrashing around in a frenzy as she sang along with the radio, and looked like she might be going into an epileptic seizure.

I stared at her for a minute trying to figure out what song could possibly be causing her to freak out, and then tried to take a guess based on those songs that I like to thrash to...

Rockin Out

Dave's Top-5 List of Head-Bangin' Tunes

  • Rebel Yell by Billy Idol
  • Rock the Casbah by The Clash
  • Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Lepard
  • American Woman by Lenny Kravitz
  • Holiday by Madonna

Turns out it was none of them. It was Betty Davis Eyes by Kim Karnes. Except it sounded really, really terrible. After I was done shopping and came back the parking lot, she had started all over again, and that's when I realized that it wasn't Kim Karnes on the radio... the woman was practicing karaoke tunes off a CD. Badly.

Heaven help those poor souls she would be "entertaining" on karaoke night.

Dead TiVo

Speaking of entertainment, my TiVo has been slowly dying. The hard drive has been squealing like crazy and stuttering from time to time. Since you can't buy a new dual-tuner TiVo for DirecTV anymore (dumbasses), I had no choice but to try and repair it. After an hour of internet research, I stumbled across a company called WeaKnees. They offer brand new hard drives for TiVos that have already been pre-loaded with the TiVo software! All you have to do is open up your TiVo, rip out the old drive, then pop in a new drive with the tools and instructions provided.

The entire process took under 10 minutes, and my TiVo is good as new... in fact, it's better than new because I ordered a faster, bigger 160 GB drive to replace my crappy old 40 GB one. As a side-benefit, the new drive is whisper-quiet, which is sweet. If you are looking to upgrade your TiVo with more space, or need to replace an old hard drive in your TiVo unit, I highly recommend WeaKnees (all warnings about possibly ruining your TiVo considered).

♫  She's ferocious, and she knows just what it takes to make a pro blush.
All the boys think she's a spy, she's got Bette Davis eyes!
 ♫

Oh great, now I can't get that song out of me head.

Just found your website and have to say I love it!

Your list is a very good one, here’s mine:

    1. Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Lepard
    2. Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
    3. Heaven is a Place on Earth – Belinda Carlisle
    4. Hallowed Be Thy Name – Cradle of Filth
    5. Life on Mars – David Bowie

  2. Neil T. says:

My cousin did an HD swap in his a couple of years ago, and he too found it pretty painless. Good to hear that it’s okay now. 🙂

Incidently Tivo never really took off here. It’s been around almost as long as it has in the US, but no-one seemed interested in it when it first came out. PVRs are taking off now, but most people are going with Freeview boxes (which don’t require a subscription) or Sky+ which comes with Sky satellite. Many are also dual-tuner.

  3. Cavan says:

You expect me to have any faith in a head-banging list that doesn’t include Bohemian Rhapsody?

  4. adena says:

Ok….no one has asked the obvious question…

HOW do you ROCK OUT to “Bette Davis Eyes”?? Maybe a light thumb tapping is in order, but a ROCK OUT?? Not so much…

  5. nic says:

    “Black Dog”
    “Whole Lotta Love”
    “Immigrant Song”

I ALWAYS can rock out to Zeppelin!

  6. ms. sizzle says:

i never would have thought of Holiday as a head bangin’ song. huh. you are making me rethink madonna.

i can’t believe that woman was practicing karaoke in her car (or that she was rockin’ out to Bette Davis Eyes- it isn’t that rockin’ of a song).

what about GnR’s Welcome to the Jungle?

  7. Pauly D says:

You realize you can buy a DIRECTV TIVO box, that has the TIVO software running on it — it just has a DirecTV logo on the box? I just got the dual tuner one with HD for DIRECTV and it’s the exact same thing as before, just no TiVo logo.

    But inside, same stuff.

  8. Chanakin says:

How could anyone leave out “Walking On Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves?

  9. RW says:

To inflict even MORE huh?-ness to the proceedings, echoing adena’s question “how” do you rock out to “Bette Davis Eyes”… let me supplement by asking WHY would would rock out to Bette Davis Eyes???

  10. Juli says:

Madonna?!?! I think you better check your gayness quotient again. Sometimes I worry about you Dave…

  11. Eve says:

TiVo isn’t available in my neighborhood, but my cable company offers DVR service, so that’s what I have, and I totally can’t live without it now! I think it’s an 80G.

I can headbang to anything I have to, but my preference would be:
Shout It Out Loud (Live) by KISS
I Don’t Know by Ozzy Osbourne
    The Trooper by Iron Maiden
    Ride The Lightning by Metallica
    Angel of Death by Slayer

  12. Dave2 says:

Luin: Oooh… classic Bon Jovi! That’s a good one. Just reading your comment makes me want to break out “Slippery When Wet!”

Neil T. Replacing the hard drive itself is not a big deal… it’s transferring the TiVo files from the old drive to the new drive that was the problem for me. The only instructions I found were for using Windows for the transfer, and I’d rather not. Fortunately, WeaKnees had the hard work already done, which made everything SO much easier. Sure I probably paid a bit more, but it was so worth it!

Cavan: There was a day I loved that song… then “Waynes World” came out and it got totally played out for me. I haven’t been a fan of it since. 🙁

Adena: This bitch was going for it. Seriously. I wish I could have gotten it on video. I can’t image what she must look like on stage! 🙂

Nic: Zep has an abundance of head-banging thrash tunes, that’s for sure. So does AC/DC, and I can’t believe that I didn’t put “Hells Bells” or “Back in Black” on my list… hmmm…

Ms. Sizzle: I totally JAM THE FREAK OUT to Madonna’s “Holiday” – love that song. Probably because a friend and I went to her concert and it was really boring. But we were drunk and out to have a good time, so we totally went for it when Madonna sang “Holiday” and I’ve loved it ever since! As for GnR “Welcome to the Jungle” – I think that’s a definite head-banger! Still love that song whenever it comes up on my iPod Shuffle! 🙂

Pauly: Really? I was going to go for the DirecTV DVR, but then read that they were using their own software (not TiVo) and it wasn’t as good as the TiVo brand stuff was. Well, that certainly makes me feel better for when my current TiVo finally dies!

Chanakin: Now that one would never occur to me. Now that I think about it, I guess it is a good song to go crazy with. 🙂

RW: I have no idea. But this woman was totally into it. When the musical interlude came on, she went into fits. I was completely surprised myself when I figured out what the song was, because it makes no sense.

Juli: I think Madonna is factored into my 20% Gay Quotient. I’m actually not just a big fan, but that song always gets me going.

Eve: You are INDEED The Emprëss of Metal with a list like that! KISS, Ozzy, Maiden, Metallica, and Slayer… that’s a buffet of metal goodness right there. 🙂

  13. Eve says:

My old blog on Diaryland (where I wrote from 2003-2005) was filled with heavy metal goodness. I featured a Metal Band of the Month column where I educated the public on the history of metal (past bands features: Manowar, Venom, Iron Maiden, Slayer).

I haven’t really wrote about metal for a while, since I think the state of it kind of sucks now. I’ve gone to every Ozzfest since 1997 and this summer I’m sitting it out cuz it sucks so damn hard.

I’m planning a redesign of my site real soon (so it’s not so blogger generic looking). I think I might have to resurrect the MBOTM feature — I owe it to the world to pass on my heavy metal knowledge!!!

Look soon for my entry about a compilation I made one year for Easter for Metal Niece (my successor): Aunt Eve’s Metal Mix for Metal Princesses in Training, Vol. 1.

  14. The one thing that disappoints me about my TiVo is the noise the machine generates. I might like to upgrade my drive and get a quiet TiVo…good post.

  15. Sayuri says:

I know I have loads of songs I rock out to, but I can’t remember any of them right now. I suck at replies…..

  16. Belinda says:

We got our second TiVo receiver from WeaKnees about 3 years ago. I think that, originally, like 5-6 years ago, TiVo was developed with/by/whatever DirecTV–that was a big reason we stayed with DirecTV when we had a chance to change. Neither of our tuners makes noise, though? What kind of noise are y’all talking about, that have the noisy TiVos?

ANYHOO–this is one of those topics on which I must acknowledge the foresight and genius of my husband, who bought TiVo when it first came out–pre-ordered it, actually–along with a lifetime contract, which I think at the time was around $200. At the time, I thought he was CRAZY, and that this newfangled contraption was just some kind of glorified VCR. I now bow to his supreme technological prowess, since we’ve been enjoying the heck out of TiVo for over 5 years now.

Now what I have to figure out is how you get WB on DirecTV. I don’t. Shouldn’t we get the same channel options? All this time I’ve been missing Veronica Mars, and…well, whatever else is on WB. We get both east and west coast network feeds, but that’s just the “big three” and FOX. Hmph.

  17. Anonymous says:

I’m so sad we don’t have TiVo over in Oz. With three kids and the husband I never get to watch my stuff, so it’d be nice. But tv sucks anyway, so maybe it’s a good thing? Feh…

I’m with Eve – no list is complete without some Metallica. Personally, I like ‘One’ or ‘Master of Puppets’. AC/DC ‘Thunderstruck’ is another good one to scream along in the car.

  18. Belinda: the noise from my TiVo is a loud fan; you can also hear the hard drive working if you stand close enough to the unit.

  19. Kevin says:

Nice list, Dave. I can rock to any of those.

    Here’s my personal list (sorry, it’s ten)…

    Warrant “Cherry Pie”
    Urge Overkill “Sister Havana”
The Donnas “Too Bad About Your Girl”
    Foo Fighters “Monkey Wrench”
    Van Halen “Panama”
    Motley Crue “Kickstart My Heart”
    Smashing Pumpkins “Zero”
    Queen “One Vision”
    Poison “Sexual Thing”
    KISS “Love Gun”

  20. Eve says:

    And here it is:

Aunt Eve’s Metal Mix for Metal Princesses in Training, Vol. #1

Kevin’s list above could have been Vol. 2.

And right on! Anonymous person above who referenced me. m/
