When I heard they were remaking Matlock, I groaned inwardly.
Why? Just... why?
Is it really that impossible to come up with a unique idea? And... whoa... they're gender-swapping it, so I guess that's their way of making it a "unique idea." Groundbreaking.
I was going to take a hard pass on the show if not for two things...
And so I tuned in.
And really liked it!
Mostly because this is not at all a reboot. It's very much its own thing. And though they do allude to it in the trailer, you are not prepared for exactly how it's different. A great twist that I absolutely won't be spoiling here...
I will be very interested in seeing if they can keep the momentum of the first episode going. Because if they can? This could end up being a sleeper hit that catches a lot of people by surprise.

I watched the first episode last night. It wasn’t a show I wanted to watch and I was never a watcher of the original. But I became sold when she referenced the original show in one of the teasers as though it was just an act of televised fiction just as we know it instead of her being related to the original character. Kinda like how you see in Halloween 3: Season of the Witch that they advertise a TV airing of the original Halloween movie meaning that these two exist in different planes. I dig that. But then I watched the episode and wow! Wasn’t expecting it at all. My only concern is that they’ve officially given it a shelf life, yanno?
I do know! And yet… after the main arc has been solved, they could shift to another mystery of some kind that has everybody on the same page.
