As I type this, Twitter is down. I don't have a lot of time to spend on Twitter, but I feel incredibly disconnected when I go to see what's happening there and can't get through. Amazingly, you don't even get a Fail-Whale anymore... just a blank white screen.
If I could Twitter right now, I'd undoubtedly tweet my surprise that the stunningly beautiful Audrey Tautou just showed up on my television in an advertisement for Chanel No. 5. A little internet research reveals that the spot was directed by the incomparable Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who had previously worked with Tautou on two of my favorite films: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (known as Amélie in English-speaking countries) and Un long dimanche de fiançailles (known as A Very Long Engagement here).
I don't usually post random videos, but this commercial is too beautiful to not be seen...
Or heard. We're also treated to Billie Holiday for a soundtrack.
Everything Jeunet touches is surreal and magical. Even a commercial for perfume. And now all I want to do is watch Amélie and A Very Long Engagement back-to-back. Even though it's 10:30 at night and I have a ton of work to do and I'd be up until 2:00am.
Another time, I guess.
Interestingly enough, Jeunet has a new film that debuted in France back in October called Micmacs à tire-larigot...
I can't wait to see it, even though it sounds like it is very different from his previous two films.
But sometimes different is good.

Amélie is my all-time FAVORITE movie. I don’t think I’ve even met another person who’s seen it, let alone has a profound appreciation for Audrey Tautou. Sadly I lost my DVD of Amélie in the Netherlands and I actually cried about that. I’ll get another copy some day when there aren’t kids to feed or things like that. Also, I’ve yet to see A Very Long Engagement but its a must do for me!
Oooh by the way, mew loaned me Un long dimanche de fiançailles! I finally get to see what all the fuss is about this weekend. 🙂
I just found out about his new movie a couple weeks back. Can’t wait to see it.
I also found a copy of a short film he did called Foutaises with Dominique Pinon. It’s a 7 minute short where it goes through this persons likes and dislikes – like at the beginning of Amelie.
I’m assuming you’ve seen his other movies – City of Lost Children and Delicatessen. Both are masterpieces in their own rights.
Amelie is my favorite film of all time. I saw it 11 times in the theaters. After the 7th time, they started to just let me in for free. And because of his body of work has become my favorite director. I can’t wait for Micmacs to hit the States. Delicatessen, his first, is an outstanding comedy as well if you haven’t seen it.
Different. Like Alien: Resurrection different. That movie is so horribly beautiful in certain moments. At first I couldn’t believe it was Jeunet, but after watching it a few times, I see it now.
I LOVE Amelie. I need to see A Very Long Engagement!
What is it about French women… he gorgeous ones are like, breathtakingly stunning and classy and just .. timeless…
Yes, Micmac is different! 😉
I love the colors in Jeunet’s films.
I saw this commercial recently, which is a rarity for me, and had to back up and re-watch it. Definitely makes an impression.
Stunning advert alright. Love Audrey Tautou. I watched Amelié the other night again for the third time. Fantastic movie. Jeunet really is a genius.
