Aquaman

Posted on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Dave!"Where is the love for Aquaman?" Bad Robert exclaimed, his voice choked with emotion.

"Er... what?" I replied, totally not understanding (as usual).

"Well, now that you've drawn a DaveToon Flash, you're just an Aquaman short of The Super Friends there on your blog!" Robert shouted, clearly upset. "Well, there's Robin too... but nobody gives a crap about Robin. Hell, you even drew Apache Chief before Aquaman, and that guy was just a guest star!"

"Ah, I see. I'll get right on that!" I shouted back... still not sure of what he meant.

When I got off work I took a look and, sure enough, Bad Robert was right. Here are the original Super Friends (sans The Boy Wonder... Wow, I guess nobody really DOES care about Robin!)...

Super Friends

And here are the DC super-heroes I've drawn up as Davetoons so far...

DAVETOON Super Friends

Hmmm... I wonder if Bad Robert would settle for Gleek, the super-stupid space monkey?

DAVETOON: Bad Monkey dressed as Gleek

Oh how I hated Gleek and the equally idiotic "Wonder Twins" messing up the show ("FORM OF AN ICE CUBE!"). Why is it that all the cartoons I had growing up felt the need to insert side-kicks and stupid animals when none were needed?

Oh well, I guess it was better than nothing.

  1. Would have liked to have seen Li’l Dave do the Golden Age of Marvel, but I guess Kirby and Ditko were already gone when you were coming up. More’s the pity.

But if all this isn’t proof that you seriously need to get your Li’l Dave books going I don’t know what.

    You’re burnin’ daylight bub.

  2. whitenoise says:

Oh, c’mon. Everyone knows that the Marvel superheroes were way cooler than the wooden DC characters. How about a Davetoon Hulk or a Davetoon Thing? Even spidey had more personality than supes or bat-guy…

  3. whall says:

You know what’s even better? Lil Wayne came before Aquaman.

  4. I like Wonder Woman. She’s got a great rack!

  5. Jacki says:

Don’t get me wrong – I love bad Monkey! Buut, he is your side-kick and an animal.

  6. Dave2 says:

But, unlike those stupid cartoon animal sidekicks, Bad Monkey isn’t an un-needed add-on distraction… he’s a main character. :-)

  7. Granted, the Wonder Twins were dumb, but they sure made for a lot of good times while making fun of them. My brother and I used to mimic them all the time and bust up laughing. Even today, the Ninja and I will click our wedding bands together and do the little “form of / shape of” gig for laughs.

  8. mew says:

as a big fan of older cartoons I must agree with you on the stupid sidekick thing.

    sometimes sidekicks were awesome though.
i’m trying to think of some.

Igoo, Zok, annnd Tundro were cool in Herculoids!

The pangolins, Bic and Bac weren’t too stupid in Spartakus (Les Mondes Engloutis). Silly but helpful.

Belle of Belle and Sebastian. They needed each other.

DynoMutt while goofy was still cool. Well I thought so. ^___^

I guess they really did go for useless before awesome most of the time.

  9. Sybil Law says:

    Gleek is fricking awesome!!!

And I had fun doing the Wonder Twins’ “form of” crap, honestly. Still – they did suck, overall.

  10. mew says:

ok, ok 30/30 of Bravestarr! who could be ridden OR anthropomorphic as a Bad-ass side armsman!

BRAIN of Inspector Gadget who along with Penny did all the damn work!

  11. kapgar says:

Why do I never remember seeing Green Lantern Davetoon? I want that as a wallpaper on my phone.

  12. carlos m. hernandez says:

Nobody cares about Robin? Looks like nobody cares about Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog either.

Even without powers they were better than Zan and Jayna.

I remember the Superfriends comics being more sophisticated than the cartoon show. Of course I could be wrong and it’s just the nostalgia factor that makes my memory of them better than they are.

  13. Avitable says:

Fuck Aquaman, where’s your Martian Manhunter?

  14. Michelle M. says:

    Scrappy Doo. Ugh.

That is the cutest Wonder Woman ever.

  15. Dan says:

Personally I demand the blue beetle. Aquaman was always a little pathetic in my book.

  16. Totally what Avitable said.

And what about Hawkgirl? And Black Canary? And the Green Arrow? And…

    Oh, never mind.

  17. Jacki says:

    Is the Green Lantern cold?
He must hate it when he has to stand next to Batman.

  18. Wendy says:

I’m a little concerned about Wonder Woman’s 5 o’clock shadow. Other than that, pretty darn cute! :)

  19. i had a comment but then i read what mew said and became completely baffled. seriously have no clue what the fuck that all meant.
probably because i actually liked the wonder twins and their stupid form of shape of crap. i mean, not as much as i loved wonder woman and aqua man, but ummmm, yeah. i just admitted that.

  20. Colleen says:

Lil Dave in drag as Wonder Woman…dude, what’z up with that? Where is her hour glass shape? You made her chunky with a five o’clock shadow…ouch!

  21. martymankins says:

I’m with Bad Robert… Aquaman was and still is my favorite of the DC Justice League.

Can’t wait to see him added to your DaveToon collection someday.
