Piracy

Posted on Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Dave! When you get to the point that you define your life by all the stuff you have to do instead of the stuff you get to do, it's probably time to make a change.

Deciding what kind of change you need to make isn't easy. Unless you've got millions of dollars... then I'd imaging it's very easy. But I don't have millions of dollars, so I'm having a rough time of it. At first I thought I might like to play video games professionally, but this is a surprisingly difficult field to get into. Mostly because you actually have to be really good at playing video games.

After my hopes for a professional video game career had been dashed, I figured it was probably best to come up with something more realistic.

So I've decided to become a pirate...

A photo of Dave wearing a Lego Pirate Mask!

Right now I'm looking to find a good pirating trade school. Wish me luck.

How will you change your life?

I’m thinking of becoming a Xerox-printer repair guy. I hear there’s a lot of work to be had.

  2. karla says:

I’d become a benevolent leader, like the Dalai Lama. A rolly polly person in robes and glasses who goes around shining light and wisdom over the beknighted losers of this world.

If they didn’t listen, I’d have my minions take care of them.

Kidding, I kid. Benevolent people don’t have minions, they have followers, I must remember this.
And, Now that i think of it, Forget the robes and the roly poly, I’ll have a trainer and be skinny and wear Dolce and Gucci and Pucci and smoochi.

But I’ll still be benevolent. Just fabulous as well.

  3. beth says:

Hmmmm, I think I’ll be an exotic dancer. What could be better than getting naked and having money thrown at you all day long????

  4. Poppy says:

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I think I already changed my life around entirely. Pretty sure, yup.

    That photo is adorable.

  5. Stacey says:

I think I’ll become Catwoman. I know she’s supposed to be a villain and all, but she’s totally hot.

  6. I actually just posted on the subject of life changes.

Hope you find a great pirate school and become an epic scourge of the high seas and rake in many doubloons!

  7. I’d like to be an ice cream taster. Do you know where I can get an application?

  8. The Duchess says:

I’d like to be Cinderella at Disneyworld. The one who works the 9 – 5 shift…

  9. NYCWD says:

Your not going to be any pirate… you’re going to be a Lego pirate!

That’s a brilliant career move in my opinion.

I think I’ll just go change my underwear. That’s the most change I can handle at the moment.

  10. Robin says:

You’re just saying that because pirates are all over the news right now. By the time you become a full-fledged pirate, all the media hype will have vanished and then where will you be? A pirate with no paparazzi.

As for me changing my life. Right now I would just like to get through the next three months. Maybe then I will have time to ponder this.

  11. B.E. Earl says:

    “Yes, I am a pirate.
    200 years too late.
    The cannons don’t thunder,
    There’s nothing to plunder.
I’m an over 40 victim of fate.
    Arriving too late…arriving too late.”
    – Jimmy Buffett

  12. Your “have” vs. “get” sentence makes a lot of sense. You seem like you’ve had to do a lot more than you get to do lately. I don’t know if that’s tied to the number of days you’ve felt crappy lately but it seems like you’ve been a lot more stressed this year.

So good luck with the pirate thing. Argh…

  13. Hilly says:

Last night at dinner and the party I went to, I was surrounded by people that talked of going to art galleries, museums, etc etc. I realized that I had let my cultural side get very stagnant after I moved here to the lame OC so right then and there, I decided to make a change. Every weekend that I am not swamped with things to get done, I am going to find something new to explore…using San Diego all the way up to LA as my stomping ground. I think this will be a great learning experience for me in many ways and you never know, maybe it will help me to finally quit hating living here.

In case all that fails, can you pick me up a pirate application too? 🙂

  14. Mad William says:

I have been hearing good things about Somalia. At least as far as pirate schools go. Let me know how it goes, I may join you. I already have a pirate name.

  15. Jeff says:

I am the same spot in my life- I never GET to do anything. I am a bit too old for the pirate gig and I don’t think they allow kids on pirate ships (unless their part of the dinner menu), so I am screwed. I guess I can continue to sit here and vicariously live the pirate life through the adventures of Lil Pirate Dave and Bad Pirate Monkey. Ahoy ye mateys!

  16. Whitenoise says:

Maybe you should start small… you know, with software and music and such. I hear that raping and pillaging requires a great deal of training and you certainly wouldn’t want to mess that up… Then there’s plundering. Now, plundering should be left to the professionals- investment bankers, mergers and acquisition dudes and CEOs. Looting companies, ripping off pension plans- definitely not for the faint of heart.

  17. claire says:

Well, I didn’t win the over $200 million lottery on Friday, so I’m still trying to figure it out. There is something I’m working on now that if it comes through would change my life six months from now, so we’ll see.

Failing that, my birthday is on Talk like a Pirate Day so I may consider the pirate life myself.

  18. Patty says:

You can come play pirate with my boy…..he loves the dress up games.
Hmmmmm…..life change, I guess I’m already doing that as I’m in school but I would really would have liked doing was underwater photographer/film maker. Not an easy thing to get into that’s for sure and a lot of travel…..ah well, maybe in my next life.

  19. Karen says:

You never *have* to do anything. You always have the choice to do it or not to. Sure, there are consequences to those choices, but you always have choice nonetheless. It’s our attachment to the choices we are used to making that makes them seem like less ‘we get to” and more “we have to.” [See: Principle of NonAttachment.] Once you truly get that everything in life is a choice, to do or not as you please, then everything becomes fun again.

I’m actually having the life I want already. Although I am planning on more chocolate. And a fireplace.

  20. Dave2 says:

It depends on your perspective on things. Certain choices are not really choices at all because their consequences end in you not being allowed choice.

On the most basic level, you have to eat. You have to sleep. You have to breathe. Otherwise, the consequence of your actions is that you die, and any further choice in the matter is out of your hands.

On a less critical level, there are still things your have to do, or the consequences of your actions narrow your choices to zero. You have to follow the law, or you go could go to prison, and any further choice in the matter is out of your hands.

Putting that aside, you’re still oversimplifying things from a moralistic and humanistic perspective. There are always going to be things in your life that you have to do depending on previous choices you’ve made. If I saw somebody bleeding in the street, my choice of beliefs dictate that I must act to assist them unless my actions would bring about more harm to them, myself, or others. There is no “choice” open to me in the matter.

Some people are happy living with the illusion that they have a choice in everything they do, and that’s perfectly okay! But my reality dictates otherwise because of choices I’ve already made.

  21. Tracy Lynn says:

Yeah, I did that two years ago, when I sold everything I owned except my cats and moved across the country.

Best thing I ever did. My life is brilliant now.

  22. My change of life plan starts with winning the lottery. Then I’m pretty sure there will be cake involved, and big kitchens.

I’m more sure of what my change of life plan wouldn’t include – answering phones for someone else, cleaning up other people’s messes, living in fear that they will close our office and we’ll all be out of jobs. Yeah, those are all on my list of thing’s I’d like to stop doing.

  23. etinny says:

I’m with you 100 percent. What’s the course, Captain? Second star to the right and straight on until morning?

  24. Gina says:

I would like to make efforts to be more interesting and to make life more interesting. I have joined some meetup groups, but beyond that I have yet to figure out how to make said efforts.

I also would like to find a job that allows for greater income and greater enjoyment.

  25. serap says:

I’m a bit late replying to this post (I blame the time difference!) but I am completely changing my life… I have quit my job (last day is the 23rd) and in 3 weeks am moving to Cyprus. I am feeling pretty stressed with trying to organise everything before I go, but I know I’ll have a great time out there and am looking forward to it hugely. I’m a big fan of change.

  26. Howard says:

I’m just going to join your crew.

Uh, I mean, Arrrr, you be lookin’ for a cabin boy, m’Capt’n?

  27. whall says:

Ye won’t be stoppin’ me from reading my BlogARRGHraphy.

  28. TWINKIE says:

I love my life. I don’t “have” much but what I do have is pretty damned great.

  29. I hear they’re hiring at the Somali ports. Either that or if you want to be a little bit in charge, just take your speedboat (you do have a speedboat right Cap’n?) and hire two or three fellas. Not sure how many swashes get buckled these days or whether planks are walked off. Still, sounds entertaining.

Once upon a time I also had this wild and crazy idea about being paid for playing games. Then I realized that was called unemployment so decided a career was probably the better choice.

  30. Whit says:

I want to make LOL Unicorns a reality.
