MoviePhone

Posted on Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Dave! And so the snow arrived as expected. Lots of it.

I wasn't really worried about my flight to Seattle because, even if they cancelled it, they would just bus me over and everything would be fine. My flight to Milwaukee doesn't leave until tomorrow morning, so it didn't much matter. The problem was getting some freight out via FedEx. After a missed pick-up and a couple failed deliveries due to "weather" over the past week, there was just no way to trust them with my critical work project that Absolutely Positively Has To Get There Overnight. And so I got somebody with 4-wheel drive to take me over the mountain passes to SeaTac International so I could stop by the FedEx office and be sure that my shipment made a flight out.

Fun.

So here I am at my airport hotel, buying a few movies off iTunes to watch on my iPhone during the flight tomorrow.

And now, even though I swore to myself that I would never post a video I didn't create on my blog, I just have to interject with the genius of director David Lynch on the subject of watching movies on a phone (foul language may ensue)...

Hey, dude, calm down... I just want something to entertain me on the plane! I don't think anybody ever expects that they're going to get the whole "movie experience" on their phone, it's just a way to pass the time.

Though I'd argue going to a movie theater isn't the best way to experience a film anymore either. Rude people with their mobile phones and loud talking and kicking your seat and smacking away on a bag of Doritos they smuggled in the theater... it's just too distracting to see a movie that way. People have no consideration or respect for others, which makes the theater-going experience miserable. Anymore, I'm happiest watching movies on my television at home. It may not be the perfect "movie experience," but it's a lot less aggravating.

Hmmm... why is it that the hotel room-service menu never has Taco Bell Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes on it? Doesn't that sound totally awesome as a before-bedtime snack? I think so...

  1. My god, that’s funny.

    Hope your flight goes well!

  2. Bre says:

I’m a big fan of watching movies from my sofa – there’s an awful lot more leg room!

  3. Dagny says:

Never go to a movie in my old neighborhood. And sit anywhere near my mom. (She has been known to enjoy a homemade crabcake sandwich while viewing a movie. Washed down with a soda from home.) Although she is quieter than many of the other people and never uses her cellphone in the theater like my best friend is prone to do — but only if it’s a call about her kids.

  4. Sayuri says:

    Aww, ickle David Lynch. *giggle*

I’m going to sound like the dumbest here, but was that an actual Apple advert or a spoof?

  5. I love watching movies at home for the same reasons you do. Plus, I can watch in my comfy clothes, drink a beer (or two or three), and eat food without other people bugging me. Oh, and the fact that there’s a pause button for bathroom breaks. Why does David Lynch even care if we’re watching a movie on a phone? He’s getting his $$$

  6. borysSNORC says:

I’m totally with you – I’d rather watch movies in the comfort of my own home so the only rude, loud-talking, noisy-eating, mobile-phone-toting individuals I have to contend with are the ones I live with!

  7. Anthony says:

Completely agree. Movies are primarily about entertainment. “Experience” doesn’t come into the equation for me most of the time.

  8. kapgar says:

It’s rare anymore that I’ve loved going to a theater fully, too. We still go quite often, but there’s always something bad about the experience and we can’t always blame the movie. Sadly, theaters’ enforcement of policy violations among paid moviegoers is pretty much non existent.

  9. Nicole says:

I watch movies on my new iPod Nano. Talk about a tiny viewing experience. But I’ve discovered watching (aka listening) to a show/movie while driving on long road trips, actually keeps me awake more then singing (loudly) to whatever music I might be playing. Thank you Apple, for helping keep me awake on the road.

  10. Avitable says:

I love going to the theater. I go during the day or the afternoon show, and I usually have a nice, quiet experience.

The Arclight in Los Angeles was a great theater because the ushers would quiet anyone who was loud. Kids weren’t allowed, and if your cellphone rang, you would be escorted out.

  11. Since I developed a deathly allergy to cheese a year and a half ago, those Taco Bell Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes sound particularly delectable. See? Life could be worse! 😉

  12. Hilly says:

Whenever a new movie comes out, I immediately add it to my Netflix queue. On the off chance that I go to the theater, then I can delete it but theaters are a total rarity because well….people annoy me ;).

  13. ajooja says:

David Lynch is a douche bag.

    That’s all. 🙂

  14. Lewis says:

Those cheesey potato deals are something yummy, aren’t they? Unfortunately, 5 pounds has to, required, must, come off of this boy’s tummy. But fast!

  15. Dustin says:

    You had me at Cheesy.

  16. Robin says:

I just got back from a trip yesterday…and very much enjoyed my movies on my iTouch.

  17. Wayne says:

Oh that’s a great clip. Didn’t know much about him other than he did my favorite move (Dune) and know I like him better.
