Stained

Posted on Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Dave!Hanging around a hospital all day can be entertaining... if you work at it.

Fortunately they had free wi-fi internet, which helped, but there was still plenty of time to wander around and come up with stuff to occupy my time. My favorite game? GUESS THAT STAIN!

Surprisingly (or not surprisingly, when you think about it), there are quite a few stains to be found all over the hospital. And every time I see one, I can't help but wonder what might have caused it...

Stains!

Stains!

Stains!

Of course me (being me) always determined that the stains were from a brain leak, or an exploding pancreas, or a spinal tap gone terribly wrong, or some other kind of freaky medical improbability. But I guess that's what makes it fun.

What's definitely not fun is watching a family receive bad news. It happens at hospitals... you would expect it to happen at hospitals... but that doesn't make it any less painful to witness.

Tomorrow is going to be a long, long day. But it has a really good thing happening at the end, so all I have to do is hang on until then and I'll be in good shape.

In the meanwhile, I'm going to sulk and bitch about all the snow.

yuck… I hope every thing turns out okay for you and your friend who had surgery.

  2. Tracy Lynn says:

First you sleep in a bathtub and now you’re hanging around a hospital? Dude, STOP IT.

  3. Michael says:

Snow! You got it already, ain’t quite reached us yet.

  4. Belinda says:

    Hang in there, Dave!

  5. serap says:

I work in a hospital Dave and can confirm that all those stains are indeed brain juice! Personally I get freaked out by the all the bleeping machines… even though the nurses have told me several times that unless people are running towards it, don’t worry about it. Its advice I share with everyone who worries about the bleeping! I really hope everything goes well, my thoughts are with you.

  6. kapgar says:

I can’t imagine what Dr. Bad Monkey’s bedside manner would be like.

  7. You’re having a baby..? 😉

  8. Kyra says:

You should really bake cookies if you have snow. It’s a law you know. 😉

Oh and I found out at the store that they really were dumping very OLD stock of Coke with Lime, and announced that was it. Talk about being behind the times, at this rate someone is going to tell me that they invented a way to cook food without using a wood burning stove! Or get water without pumping! Inconcievable! Say it ain’t so!

  9. Bre says:

Please feel free to send all your extra snow my way… I’m seriously in need of some over here!

  10. RW says:

That’s not a stain, that’s the imprint of a tropical fish that died on the floor and laid there for eight days until somebody noticed and picked it up. You can’t fool me.

  11. bogup says:

Most stains on hospital carpets are similar to stains in office buildings and elsewhere. Coffee, food and soft drinks, etc. That said, it does lend itself to Bad Monkey imagination. 1st rule, don’t lick the carpet. 2nd rule, don’t let children crawl around on the carpet. 3rd rule, hospitals have a lot of airborne germs so don’t linger as a patient or as a visitor…

  12. StephanieP says:

I enjoy playing guess that stain unless I’m in a hotel room. Then it frightens me. Because there are only a few possibilities and it’s unlikely that any of them are something harmless, like leprechaun droppings or pixie juice.
    Have a great day, Dave!

  13. Lewis says:

Okay, so pardon me, but I must be a little out of touch here: WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU “HANGING AROUND” A HOSPITAL FOR? Work? I had no idea you did projects in hospitals! Having been a volunteer in an ER in a prior life, the sadness still comes to me from time to time….it can be a horrible place. And DO YOU HAVE SNOW? The big news here is the possibility of it on Saturday…..even for just a few hours! (We’re so fucking weird that way…..)

  14. Avitable says:

I hope your gender reassignment surgery goes well, Davina.

  15. Rick says:

Coffee. I just keep telling myself they’re just coffee stains. Especially the ones on the furniture.

  16. Miss Britt says:

The stains on the floor are uninteresting to me.

It’s the streaks up and down the walls that make me wonder.

  17. Not A Granny says:

No, I don’t even want to guess about stains in hospitals..nope won’t do it…

Yup, you can keep the snow and the cold and the yukky…75 degrees here!! (not bragging at all LOL)

  18. Wayne says:

I hate to see a brain cry.

    Especially green tears.

  19. ChillyWilly says:

I like your assessment of the stains. I’ve always assumed it was spilled coffee, of which A LOT gets consumed at most hospitals.

  20. Mrs RW says:

As one who works in a hospital I would tell you not to question too deeply into unidentified stuff; you really DON’T want to know. Secondly, make sure you have a knowledgeable person to watch over your loved one at all times. Thirdly, if you were to be at my hospital I would hold your hand while you waited – and give you chocolate pudding. Pudding makes everything better.

  21. iddly says:

    Probably when their roof leaked
