DOA

Posted on Friday, August 25th, 2006

Dave!Well crap. I had thought that my re-seating of the RAM, video card, and hard drive was a permanent fix for my new DOA Mac Pro yesterday... but, alas, it was not to be. When I went to turn it on this morning it was dead again, and no amount of mucking about the insides would help. My brand new Mac is dead. I am guessing that something got banged loose in shipping.

As I have said many times... I don't evaluate a company by what happens when things go right (that's what is supposed to happen), but what happens when things go wrong. Usually with a serious computer problem like this, the manufacturer insists on sending random replacement pieces in a half-hearted attempt to fix the computer. Not Apple. They are building me an entirely new machine. Pretty classy.

So, while I am sad that I don't have a functional Mac Pro, I am relieved that Apple is handling it correctly.

In other news, I've added Dr. Phil to my list of The Worlds Most Annoying People...

Douchebags

He surges past David Caruso, Martha Stewart, and Judge Judy... but doesn't quite knock Jared the Subway Sandwich Whore from the top spot. Unfortunately, this drops American Idol Taylor Hicks out of the top-five, but who really cares? He disappeared faster than vapor, so it's not like he's around to be annoying anyway.

Yeah, I’ve never seen more than 10 seconds of Dr. Phil (actually I stopped watching network TV for the most part in 1999 and we completely ditched TV for good a year and a half ago), but he annoys the crap out of me.

I saw his line of “diet products” a couple years back and noticed corn syrup as the second ingredient in his “diet” bar. That said it all for me.

He strikes me as someone who made a ton of money off of the following two premises: (1) Most people (aka “The Masses”) will listen to loud, obnoxious people and generally do as they say; (2) Most people will listen to someone who appears extremely frank and upfront because most people try to hide most of their emotions and thoughts (if they have any) – so they find it exciting/stimulating for awhile, because it’s refreshingly different.

My very first reaction to him: I wouldn’t trust him to mail a letter for me. Seriously.

  2. jodi says:

today i got a compliment on my “zombies ate my brain” tshirt. 🙂

  3. Dave2 says:

Kapha… Dr. Phil doesn’t act like much of a doctor at all. He’s an endorsement clown, and nothing more.

Jodi… Only today?!? People should be complimenting you EVERY DAY you wear it! Are you wearing it inside-out or something? 🙂

  4. margalit says:

Dr Phil drives me bananas because I think he is almost as bad as Tom Cruise in doing a disservice to ADHD kids. He has some idjit doctor specialist on every single thing, and this guy says that there really isn’t any ADHD. I swear it, I want to send The Boy to their respective homes sans medication and let them suffer.

I wore my zombie’s shirt today to a concert and got a compliment, too.

  5. Ooh, I loathe Dr. Phil. Isn’t he a bit on the chubby side to be peddling diet products? I can ask that in a not mean way because I myself am zaftig. 😉

My top five would have to be (in order of least heinous to steeped in eviality):
Ellen Pompeo, the guy who does the Oxyclean commercials, Perez Hilton, Ann Coulter, and Paris Hilton.

  6. Göran says:

I find the whole Dr. Phil charade fascinating. A fat man pointing fingers and makinga fortune selling dietbooks!! That is so brilliant somehow.

    Sorry about the Mac 🙁
At least Apple deals with it in a good manner!

  7. Brandon says:

Yeah, Dr. Phil is annoying. I’m just curious what happened that just now shot him to number two on the list. Did I miss some juicy Dr. Phil gossip?

  8. Chanakin says:

Ah, Dr. Phil. The only person that can undo 30 years of neurosis in a half hour simply by uttering powerful messages like, “you can’t butter a ‘possum and expect it to rebuild a carburetor.”

I think Cesar Millan would blow him outta the water.

    “What’s the problem?”

    “Well, he’s always…”

    “Sssst.”

    “He’s….”

    “Sssst.”

    “But….”

    “Sssst.”

  9. EDDIE says:

    Did you forget Donald Trump?

  10. Anthony says:

BTW Dave, when is the store re-opening? I wanna get a zombies t cos I was stupid enough to miss out on the blogiversary this year.

  11. Laurence says:

I haven’t told you anything new if I said that Apple are the best !!!

In my top 5, David Caruso appears on the first place (really). No doubt it’s because I don’t know the 4 others persons. I used to be interested in learning. But strange as it may seem, I don’t want to know the 4 others persons… 🙂

  12. delmer says:

It’s, unfortunately, beyond my expectations that Apple would build you an entirely new machine. Good for them and you!

Just last month I ordered a Polycom Teleconferencing piece of equipment. It was several hundered dollars. It arrived in a non-usable manner (it would make a call, but not break one.) I never used it past testing it.

Polycom sent a replacement — with big ‘refurbished’ stickers on them

And, the replacement power supply they sent was DOA.

  13. ChillyWilly says:

“I’ve added Dr. Phil to my list of The Worlds Most Annoying People.”

Since the first time I’ve seen him in any media outlet, I’ve thought this. The man is a total fraud and has mooched off Oprah’s coat tails way too long.

Sorry to hear about the new Mac, but nice to see that Apple is making it right. Are they going to hand deliver this one?

  14. ms. sizzle says:

Even I forgot who Taylor Hicks is and I watched the damn show and even voted for him once or twice at the beginning. Ha!

    Dr. Phil BUGS.

  15. Greg says:

Ha ha– nice. Taylor Hicks is still a close 6th, though. Keep up the good work…

  16. James Bow says:

You can’t leave the story at that. Tell us about the precise moment when Dr. Phil rocketed to #2!

  17. Kyle I says:

You would think if they’re celebs they’d at least be tolerable for one of their nausiating programs.

Apple’s got their sh!t together. I bought a 15″ PowerBook about a year ago and the case was just ever so slightly off so it wouldn’t sit flat. I brought it in to the store and in about five minutes of the tech looking at it they had a new PowerBook G4 laying in front of me.

  18. Jeff says:

Hmmm, hopefully they’ll take responsibility for the mismanagement of your shipment and trim the shipping time from 17 days to something like, oh I don’t know – OVERNIGHT?!!!

  19. Hilly says:

See I would put Taylor Hicks way above David Caruso, but I have a fondness for kitschy cheesy things, which is what Horatio Crane is to me, so yanno.

Ann Coulter not making that list? Or is there a separate bitch list?

  20. Kyle I says:

BTW, could Paris Hilton be added to that list?

  21. Kevin says:

So what did Philly boy do to finally warrant inclusion on the list? I’m just curious.

  22. Jun says:

Have you taken the good Doctor’s “personality quiz”? I’m sure your lowly opinion of him will change, that I guarantee

    http://psychcentral.com/personquiz.htm

  23. Karl says:

Wow, now THAT’S customer service. Go Apple!

  24. Eve says:

    Right on, Apple!

I can’t hate Jared, because I can’t hate people who lose weight. I have a place in my heart for them. Dr. Phil though, he’s an ass.

  25. kilax says:

I love that you have a list of your “Worlds Most Annoying People.” I never understood what all the hoopla was with Dr. Phil. What an phony.

  26. James says:

You should listen to Dr. Laura. She’s VERY annoying!
