Bullet Sunday 256

Posted on Sunday, November 13th, 2011

Dave!Wah. I have a stomach ache this Bullet Sunday.

• Treat? I realize I'm probably late to the party on this one, but I am just now hearing about Pox Pops. Apparently, some parents are so opposed to vaccinating their kids against chicken pox that they are going to extreme measures to purposely infect them. They do this by having the parents of pox-ridden kids lick a lollipop and mail it to them... SO THEY CAN HAVE THEIR KID SUCK THE POX OFF OF IT! The idea being that once you get chicken pox, you're immune for the rest of your life...

DAVETOON: Mumpy Bad Monkey with a Bad Lolli!

I don't pretend to know about the benefits/dangers of vaccinating children (because I don't have any)... but this sounds pretty fucked up to me. Gawd only knows what was sucking on that pop before your kids get their hands on it.

• Leat? I can't adequately summarize the horrors of this story I just read about growing laboratory meat (leat?), so you'll just have to go read it for yourself...

As a vegetarian, I honestly can't say which disgusts me more... dead animal flesh... or this abomination of nature. Holy crap. Is a soy burger really that awful an alternative?

• Sweet! After his surprisingly brilliant appearances on Saturday Night Live, I've become a bit of a Justin Timberlake fan. He's incredibly talented and funny as hell. But it's good to know that he's a nice guy on top of it all. Earlier this year, he received a public video invitation from Corporal Kelsey DeSantis to attend the Marine Corps Ball...

Much to everybody's surprise, he agreed to go...

And then... he actually went! And if there were any doubters out there thinking that he was going as some kind of publicity stunt, he wrote a really nice recap of the experience on his blog they should read...

The lucky bastard! Justin ended up with a sexy Marine that can kick his ass. Talk about your dream date! Semper Fi, Marine. Semper Fi.

On that happy note, my stomach demands I call it a night. :-(

  1. Millar says:

Getting chicken pox in younger years does not prevent you from getting shingles in later years; same genus (Herpes Zoster).

Been there when there was no vaccine for chicken pox; and you don’t want shingles

  2. Citizen_Stu says:

It is better for people to get chicken pox when they are young because it is harmless to them but can be deadly to adults.

But I agree that this is a very strange way about making sure they get it when they are young.

  3. Those pox pops are gross, but I thought that all mail was irradiated to kill any viruses that terrorists would try to mail ever since the anthrax scares. If that’s true, wouldn’t the pox be killed as well, or are those folks just stupid?

I’m gonna go with they’re stupid.

I hope your stomach ache is gone!
I can’t even discuss the disgustingness of the leat. That makes me want to hurl.
I actually knew parents who sent their kids to kid’s houses known to have chicken pox, for the same purpose. The whole no vaccination issue makes me crazy as it is- when I hear parents talk stupidity like that, it makes me homicidal.
I hadn’t heard anything about JT. How cool!

  5. the muskrat says:

My parents brought me over to friends’ house with kids who had the pox when I was little, so that I’d get it over with as a little kid, but I didn’t get it. When I finally DID get it, it was in high school, and it was much worse, and I still have (physical) scars as a result! But back then, we didn’t have vaccines for this disease. I think buying a sucker with an infection on it is a little creepy, but I it is better to get this disease over with as a little kid than as a grown up, when it tends to be a lot worse. However, we just let them get the vaccine.

  6. martymankins says:

I was never much of an NSync fan, but the last 10 years, Justin Timberlake has impressed me, mostly as an actor in the movies and his SNL skits. Now this awesome Marine date he went on send him over the top for me, too.

  7. Avitable says:

I’m a huge JT fan – except for his music, of course. I still can’t stand that.
