Bullet Sunday 141

Posted on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Dave!I didn't get any sleep last night, so this will undoubtably be a barely coherent edition of Bullet Sunday...

• Discriminated. Everybody is discriminated against at some point. And some people definitely get it worse than others. And while I'm sure progress is being made every day, every once in a while I hear something so outrageous that it makes me question if we've not reached a point where that progress is running backwards. Today was one of those days, because I received an email from a friend who filled me in on his recent bout with discrimination. It's all at once disgusting and disappointing, made even more so because he has no recourse. I have faith that eventually the human race can live together without prejudice. We have to, or we perish. But that day keeps getting further and further away to me, and I can't help but feel overwhelming sadness because of it.

• Bear TV. I want this...

Bear Television

Awww... It's a television that you can snuggle with after you're done watching him!

• Disc. In the continuing effort to convert my analogue life into digital 1's and 0's, I've been having all my old photo negatives and paper pictures scanned. I'm probably 80% there. The problem is that it's going to be a long road to reaching 100%. Some media, in particular 110 Black & White negatives and Kodak's infamously crappy Disc Film, are really expensive to have done right...

Kodak Disc

I don't know why I ever bought into the technology. Probably because the camera was so small and easy to load. Unfortunately, those conveniences necessitated tiny negatives which produced crappy photos. I only used the stupid thing for less than two years, but they were two very important years... Thus my junior year of high school: Disc. My first trip to New Orleans: Disc. My senior year of high school: Disc. Fortunately my parents bought me a 35mm Canon A-1 for graduation so I was set after that. But right now... my past belongs to Disc. Will digital be forever?

• Pushed. When I read about a movie that features super-powered psychics battling it out in Hong Kong... well... it's not like I can pass that up. I didn't even bother to look at the reviews over at Rotten Tomatoes, I just add it to my NetFlix queue and watched it when the DVD arrived. Only to discover that it's one of the stupidest, most needlessly incoherent and incomprehensible messes I've ever seen. The entire film was nothing more than a set up for a sequel, but it sucked so horrendously bad that there probably isn't going to be a sequel. That leaves us with a half-finished disaster that's sometimes pretty to look at, but has paper-thin characters and a patchwork story that ends up being a pale imitation of Scanners. When the hell are filmmakers going to understand that you make the best movie you can... THEN worry about a sequel? The sad thing here is that the concept is so cool. But this piece of EPIC FAIL! will undoubtedly kill any hope of a great film of this kind being made for quite a while.

Push Poster SUCK!

And that will have to be it for this edition of Bullet Sunday... I don't think I can make it through two nights in a row without sleep.

  1. Michelle M. says:

I just watched Push tonight. Wish I had read your review first.

  2. Robin says:

You could just become a filmmaker yourself, you know….that would probably end epic FAIL movies forever….

  3. jenny says:

SQUEEEE! I had a Kodak disc as my first camera. I took it on a trip to DC, which I got to attend for being the captain of the crossing guard. God, I was so power hungry back then.

  4. undisciplined says:

Here’s some ridiculous discrimination – I was denied a trip to Japan for being “too Oriental”. My school had an essay contest in which all participants (4 out of 400 juniors, sad eh?)just happened to be of Asian decent. Thai, Korean, 1/2 Korean(me), and 1/4 Japanese. The counselor judging the contest actually said to me that she didn’t want anyone “oriental” to go because there wasn’t any point in sending someone that already knew the culture. I tried explaining to her that I was raised in the States my entire life(minus a year and 1/2) and Japanese and Koreans were not “the same”. Too bad she already made up her mind! So she picked the student with the best grades (my Thai friend) and the one with the least Asian ancestry to be interviewed. I’m glad that my friend ended up being chosen by the trip sponsor, but I never forgot that day and that crap counselor who I’m sure had never left the state, let alone the country! I’m glad that I did finally get to visit Japan, even if it was 15 years later! 🙂

  5. Hilly says:

Oh just great, I have Push probably waiting for me down at my mailbox right now! I’m going to pretend I didn’t see this and try to enjoy it. You’ve thought things have sucked before and I’ve been okay with them. Ahem, yes…I will keep telling myself that. 🙂

  6. martymankins says:

Discrimination is such a dark mark on society. Salt Lake is going through some of that now with the whole “kissing on Main Street Plaza” ordeal that happened about 10 days ago when a gay couple walking through, kissed and were stopped by LDS church security for breaking the rules of too much public displays of affection. I wish there were more equal treatment in this world.

As for outdated films, I still use a Pentax Auto110 on occasion. Not for anything major, but just for fun and nostalgic reasons. It’s getting harder to find 110 film anywhere except online. The disc camera, while slim and small in size, was a bad idea all around. Dwayne’s still processes disc film.

  7. Tracy says:

Well, poop. We just saw a trailer for PUSH the other night and thought it looked interesting…but I guess that it went straight-to-DVD for a reason. Thanks for the heads-up!

P.S. I had the Disc camera, too…the pictures that I took on it all blow. I admire the fact that you still have the negatives!

  8. That polar bear TV is 100% AWESOME!!!

  9. NYCWD says:

    I liked PUSH.

Even though the set-up was cheesy, and there were huge holes in the storyline, and the screaming Chinamen were annoying as all hell, I kinda liked the action.

But then again… I’m a sucker for any movie set in Hong Kong.

I think its because I secretly just want to live in one of those house boats.

  10. Göran says:

Sorry about your friend going through the shits 🙁

I totally want the bear tv or the giraffe tv 🙂

  11. When you get the Bear TV, you must snuggle it and take a picture of you snuggling it. Then you must send me the picture so that I can snuggle THAT while I go to bed at night.

Wait, did I just type that out loud? Dang…

  12. claire says:

I totally want the bear tv.

Good for you w/the photo scanning. Mine are so far from being digitized. Maybe .25% done and not in any methodical way either. I’m still working on dating old envelopes of photos. Was so stoked the other day to see a newspaper w/in a photo, so I could get an article title via magnifying glass that lead me to the date: June 9, 1991. Yea for NYT’s online archives.

  13. kilax says:

My husband wanted to see Push and I keep pretending to forget to put it in our queue 😉

  14. Poppy says:

We saw Push on Sunday! My take: Oceans 11 meets Heroes meets any 007 where they gamble.

    The exploding fish were upsetting.

  15. Sean says:

I couldn’t agree more with your review. Also, Chris Evans is a better actor when he’s naked. He should stick to those sorts of roles.

    -S

  16. kapgar says:

Man, I loved me my Kodak Disc camera. Sure that stuff might be a bitch to transfer and maybe it wasn’t the best quality camera in the world. But for a kid like I was when I got mine, I LOVED IT. That’s what got my photographer juices flowing.

  17. Twinkie says:

OMG….. I LOVED PUSH! Great acting… yah not believable but hellooooooo… neither are most action movies. It’s a Hero-ish type of film so if you liked the show Heroes you will love PUSH.

  18. Dave2 says:

I think Heroes is one of the worst shows on television, so there you go. 🙂

  19. whall says:

I used to use those discs like a ninja and slice bears in half so I could eat them on my own tv show.

Wait. Are you discriminating against me now? I think I shall ‘push’ your point of view so that you agree with me.

There might be a tote bag in it for you.
