Color of Greed and Stupidity

Posted on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022

Dave!Pantone is now charging people to use their color books in Adobe Illustrator.

I wonder if there's an alternative system, because this is fucking absurd. Designers don't buy inks... we specify inks so that printers and fabricators can purchase the inks from Pantone.

Except now we can't specify jack shit because Pantone wants us to pay $60 a year for the privilege.

Fuckers.

If anything, Pantone should be paying ME to specify their inks to my printers! Something I've been doing for FREE for them for decades.

I swear, there are days I just want to take a torch to corporate America for the way that they treat people. I sure hope that somebody who isn't a greedy piece of shit develops a new color system replacement for people who are tired of Pantone's bullshit. I am betting that every designer on earth would hop on board.

Having to pay to promote a company's products when we don't even get a cut of the sale? Are you kidding me? Apparently Pantone didn't learn their lesson with Hexachrome and needs to be taught another.

Fuckers.

I truly hate this subscription model to all things software. $60/year to specify colors? What a load of crap.

Exactly. We are quickly getting to the point where you can’t just buy software and choose when you want to upgrade (or not). That’s a shitty business model for users… and a great model for developers… so guess who wins?

    Dave,

I have a similar super-massive-black-hole-of-hatred-towards-Adobe living at the center of my soul.

Its the rent-seeking-behavior that drives me crazy.
Unfortunately, the alternatives I’ve tried to Adobe Illustrator don’t cut it either.

InkScape is pretty powerful but is FUCKING UNUSABLE.
Affinity Designer is pretty usable but is FUCKING UN-POWERFUL.

    Fuckers.

I can’t decide if Adobe’s subscription model equals out to the cost of buying upgrades… my gut tells me it’s probably pretty close. HOWEVER… what I hate is that you have to subscribe to a bunch of crap that you’ll never use. Why not offer a cheaper subscription tier for those who just want the basics… Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat? Then offer add-ons (I’d buy Lightroom) or other “pro” bundles for those who want the loads of other stuff. The answer is simple… they need people who use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat to subsidize all those other apps because otherwise they’d not have the money to develop them. Infuriating. I’d be paying a hell of a lot less if I were only paying for the apps I use.
