Autocomplete

Posted on Tuesday, December 14th, 2004

Dave!I had started this meme back when I saw it at Lost Pilgrim (which I read religiously, especially on Friday, so I can see how Richard has brilliantly perverted the FridayQ that week). But something happened for one reason or another and I forgot about it.

Until Kazza did it, and now I feel I feel compelled to finish it (so you have her to blame!).

Basically, the idea is to open up your web browser of choice, then type in each of the letters of the alphabet to see what is "autocompleted" in the URL field. Kind of a nifty idea for a meme, I must say! To spare those of you who don't want to view 26 of my bookmarks, the list is in an extended entry. Though, I must say, a few of the links are worth a look if you don't already know about them...

  • a: AdTunes. Ever hear a song in a commercial and wonder what it was? AdTunes to the rescue.
  • b: Blogography. No, not my blog, but the maintenance page where I have to manually approve each and every comment, thanks to dumbass trackback and comment spammers.
  • c: Cinescape. A genre entertainment site that doesn't have an atom/RSS feed, which means I have to check it every day. Oh how I loathe sites without syndication!
  • d: del.icio.us. A "social bookmarks manager" which shows what people have been bookmarking on the web. I sometimes go here to get ideas for blog entries when nothing is happening in my life.
  • e: Empire Magazine Online. This is hands-down the best movie magazine on the planet, and funny. Since it costs a fortune to have it imported from the U.K., I have to make due with reading bits of it online instead. I wish they sold a digital edition at Zinio.
  • f: flickr. A photo sharing service that kicks ass.
  • g: Gizmodo. It's the gadgets weblog!
  • h: Hard Rock Cafe. Just checking to see if there are any Hard Rock openings I should know about for DaveCafe.
  • i: iStockPhoto. A brilliant alternative to outrageously expensive stock photography, iStockPhoto allows people to upload and share royalty-free photography. Every time somebody downloads one of your photos, you get credits that you can then use to download other people's photos. If you don't have any credits, just buy some for 50 cents each! Lo-Res photos are 1 credit, Medium-Res is 2 credits, and Hi-Res is 3 credits. That's right... $1.50 for a Hi-Res, royalty-free photo. Amazing.
  • j: Jay Pinkerton. A funny blog with humor that's not for everybody (i.e., it's foul-mouthed).
  • k: My So-Called Strife. This comes up under "k" for "KirkKitsch." Kirk's got a terrific site with loads of 80's pop culture entries that are pretty sweet. He sometimes documents everyday events in his life with amusing photos, which I find highly entertaining.
  • l: Lost Pilgrim. The aforementioned site which originally got me started with this meme.
  • m: Métrorama. Beautiful panorama photographs of the metro stations of Paris (that's "subway" to us Americans and "Underground" to my U.K. friends).
  • n: News at the BBC. The only news site I bother to read. The BBC may not be perfect, but it beats the heck out of American news sites, which are strongly biased, total crap sites which rarely tell the whole story.
  • o: Orbitz. Travel reservations site.
  • p: panoramas.dk. Continuing my infatuation with panorama photography, this site has some terrific shots.
  • q: Quizilla. Probably comes up because I recently added a quiz there.
  • r: Rotten Tomatoes. A movie review aggregator that give you "the big pictue" as to how a movie is reviewed. Includes the major critics (like Roger Ebert) and complete tools (like James Berardinelli) so you get a pretty good idea whether an unknown movie is worth your valuable time to watch/rent.
  • s: SNL Archives. An exhaustive reference for the television show Saturday Night Live. All the episodes, all the guest stars and musical guests, all the players (and what they did), everything.
  • t: The Futon Critic. Excellent source of news and happenings for television junkies.
  • u: Urban Dictionary. Most excellent dictionary of all those slang terms kids are using now-a-days. Very educational.
  • v: Vintage Vantage. Cool vintage T-shirts.
  • w: WSDOT Pass Cams. Whenever I have to drive over to Seattle in the winter, I check the Washington State Department of Transportation Mountain Pass Web-Cams to know which route I should take (Blewett/Snoqualmie or Stevens).
  • x: X-Entertainment. Goofy pop-culture site.
  • y: Yes Asia. Source for Asian books, movies and other merchandise that's a total rip-off of Amazon in "look and feel."
  • z: Ze's Page. Why, it's the brilliant Ze Frank, of course!

Well that was 40 minutes of my life I won't be getting back!
