Bullet Sunday 91

Posted on Monday, July 28th, 2008

Dave!Since yesterday I was threatened with death if I didn't put down my computer, there was no time for bullets. Thus we have Bullet Sunday on Monday today!

Just a few odds and ends from my Comic-Con experience...

• Costumed. Why is it that every time I see news coverage on TV, magazines, or in the paper that they always show most everybody at Comic-Con in crazy costumes? In reality, only a small percentage of attendees actually dress up. I guess that it's more fun to portray Comic-Con as some kind of freak show, but even that's way harsh. Why is it cool to dress up in costumes for Halloween, but not cool any other time?

• Television. The big shows represented at Comic-Con are ones like Lost, Heroes, and Chuck. All of which are shows that I positively loathe. I'd even go so far as to say I hate them. Lost started off incredible, but quickly spun into redundant idiocy. Heroes was always pointless and stupid because you've got all these super-powered people who rarely actually use their super-powers. And Chuck, which started out clever and interesting, dropped to rock-bottom because the lead character is a whiny, bumbling bitch in every frakin' episode and I just got tired of it. I want new geek television shows.

• Batman. Yes, I've seen Dark Knight twice now (and will see it again this coming weekend). I don't know what I can say that's any different from most everybody else... it's a brilliant, brilliant film, and I totally loved it. Not only is it one of the best comic book super-hero films ever made, it's one of the best films ever made period. Each performance was a revelation, particularly Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent, and this movie deserves some serious Oscar love in every applicable category.

• Watchmen. I am seriously stoked for this film, even though I know better. It can never measure up to the book... but, when taken on its own merits, it's looking like a terrific piece of genre entertainment. March 6th cannot come soon enough.

And that's going to have to be it. I threw my back out, and the pills I took are starting to kick in. For some nice Dave Diego recaps, here are some by Snackiepoo and Winter and SJ, and Karl, and Motley.

    It’s time for bullet comments!

    – I will gladly compete with you in watching Dark Knight in the theaters this summer. You were right, it really IS that good. I’m definitely going to see it again.

    – Also I will pick up a copy of Watchmen and read it in the next week. You have shown me the error of my ways.

    – Sorry about your back. That sucks. 🙁

  2. It seems the Ninja and I are the only ones who didn’t like Dark Knight as much as Batman Begins.

  3. Poppy says:

I know they left the pursing portion of Harvey’s lips intact but it was still weird to me that he could talk just fine and even pronounce his Ps after the accident.

Also when I become a gangster and fall off a building and land on my feet I assure you my knees will at least be broken and I won’t be standing upright (with or without a cane) in my next scene.

The scene where Heath is dressed in the nurse’s uniform (with an analog watch in his breast pocket!), socks, and sneakers trying to get the detonator to work is my favorite in the whole movie. I could not stop giggling. Also, Dawg tells me I giggled throughout the entire last scene with Rachel. ooooopsie. 😀

  4. Dave2 says:

Uhhh… yeah… it’s a movie about a guy who fights crime dressed as a bat, and your problem was with his knees not being broken after a fall and Two-Face being able to pronounce “P’s”?

I think there’s a certain suspension of belief you have to buy into… giggling or no giggling… when seeing a movie like this.

  5. Poppy says:

Not when Batman falls, when the GANGSTER guy falls. Gangsters don’t have special powers or fancy suits.

Apparently my quirky charm has worn off.

    ARE YOU ON VICODIN?

  6. Dave2 says:

    Hah!

    No chance of that.

But being bothered by a gangster’s knees not breaking given everything else that’s going on in that movie has made me smile… especially when that’s one of the most plausible thing in the entire film! Skydivers have fallen from a heck of a lot further height than that and walk away unscathed when their chute doesn’t open!

No… your quirky charm is absolutely in tact! 😀

  7. Poppy says:

    WHO IS THIS?! BAD MONKEY?????????

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH DAVE2!??!??!?!

Don’t make me come down there.

PS – I said “worn” and you said “in tact”. Hehehehe.

  8. Dave2 says:

No no… it’s me. Bad Monkey would have crapped on the keyboard and walked away. It’s what he does.

  9. Brandon says:

Taking this in a little serious direction – Not only does it happen at Comic-Con, but it also happens at anti-war rallies. They always ignore the masses of normal, average people who show up and focus on the freaks who wear butterfly costumes or dress up as whales or dance around a drum circle or whatever. It’s one of the reasons that, despite the country overwhelmingly against the war, there is no anti-war movement to speak of. It just all looks so frivolous on TV.

  10. claire says:

hope your back is feeling better!

I really enjoyed Dark Knight too. Loved the balloon pull out of building to be caught by plane bit of action.

I agree with you on the tv shows though I’ve been able to tolerate Heroes a bit only by Kristen Bell’s presence. Lost was great when it was almost pure drama with just the hint of a monster. It just got too goofy for me with the hatch and all the other people on the island.

  11. Interviewing or taking pictures of only the people dressed in costume at Comic Con is similar to only interviewing the worst-dressed, poorly-spoken hillbillies anytime something newsworthy happens in West Virginia. Same mentality.
