Utah Day 3: Goblin Valley

Posted on Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

Dave!Woo hoo! Vacation-time baby! There are indeed benefits to working through the night... especially when it means that it gives me an extra day to goof off in Utah. And let me tell you, there is a lot of places to be goofing around in this state. I drug my lazy ass out of bed at 7:00am (after a blissful five hours of sleep) so I could hit the road early. All because I wanted to see "Goblin Valley" which is supposed to be a really cool place.

And it is.

The entire valley is filled with interesting lumps of rock just begging to be explored. It's kind of like a giant field of mushrooms, except the mushrooms in question are fifty feet tall, made of stone, and probably don't taste that great in a spaghetti sauce...

When I hiked down inside the valley, some bitchy woman was bitching to her equally bitchy husband saying "THIS IS STUPID! I DON'T SEE ANY GOBLINS!! WHY DO THEY CALL IT GOBLIN VALLEY??" I'd imagine that is because the skanky ho only sees this...

Whereas I was seeing something entirely different when I looked at the same scenery. Goblins everywhere I looked. Hundreds of them...

When people tell me that I act like a child, I am never offended. It just means I get to look at the world in a much cooler way than everybody else my age. Sometimes it really is good to be me.

That lady yelling that reminds me of something I overheard in Maui. While we were on the road to Hana we were walking back to our car from one of the many waterfalls we swam in. The place we were at had one waterfall on a path nice and close to the road that was easily accessible but the second one was a pretty complicated little hike upstream of about five minutes.

So this old lady with her equally old companions is walking away from the first waterfall and looking for the second one downstream and she yells at her friends “THEY PROMISED US TWO WATERFALLS, AND DAMMIT WE ARE GOING TO SEE TWO WATERFALLS!!!” I just ran back to the car laughing my ass off.

Lol, that is so cute. I think looking at things as a kid is a luxury, it’s not someting everyone can do. In fact, I saw the goblins too in the first picture before I saw yours!

  3. TheMike says:

I don’t get it….why is it called Goblin Valley??

  4. Harold says:

Those “Goblin” rocks look alot like the people I work with! They are all “hard-Headed” and “Stoned” most of the time.

  5. karla says:

I think that is where they filmed a scene in “Galaxy Quest”? I love that movie, when he fought the Grgnak? That was pretty Goblin-y.

  6. Dave2 says:

Uh oh. theMike has just made theList!

Indeed “Galaxy Quest” was set in Goblin Valley for that scene. It kind of does look like another planet, so it’s fitting I suppose!

Gee Harold… it sounds like the people you work with are just horrible, horrible people! 🙂

    Hilarious post!! I loved it!

  8. Diamond Glass says:

I was there when I was a kid, there were tiny caves perfect for little kids to crawl around in. It was great! I love that valley, what an annoying lady.
