Bullet Sunday 39

Posted on Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Dave!Sunday, Bullet Sunday... here I come!

Unfortunately, I have to go to work today, so it's a short one...

• Guest Appearance! I'm filling in for Hilly over at Snackie's World on today's Snackie Sunday...

Snackie Sunday

Of course, since everybody who is anybody already reads Hilly, I guess you already knew that. But just in case you are one of those people who read their blogroll in alphabetical order, I thought I'd let you know so you can skip from the "B's" to the "S's" and answer my super-snoopy questions right away.

• Super TV! Man, is there ever some good television happening in the off-season...

Summer TV

Rescue Me is as amazing and shocking in its fourth season as it ever was. Burn Notice features Bruce Campbell and Gabrielle Anwar in a supporting roles, which is reason enough to watch, but it is an incredibly well-written and acted show as well. The Closer is probably one of the best dramas to hit television in years. Top Chef is drastically more watchable than last season's really bad run. Traveler just keeps getting better and better with each episode (but is on ABC, and so it will probably be canceled). Psych is back, and hasn't lost any of the magic that made it so much fun last year. And let's not forget that Sci-Fi has a new Flash Gordon series dropping on August 10th! I am such a TV whore.

• Gay TV! And speaking of good television shows for summer, I was gifted an episode of Rick & Steve, World's Happiest Gay Couple from the iTunes Music Store and laughed my ass off. The show is not even close to politically correct, and SO wrong in many ways that I actually felt bad about laughing in parts. But it's a cute cartoon, so it's not like you can feel too bad...

Rick and Steve World's Happiest Gay Couple!
Think of it like milking a cow. Men are just smellier, stupider cows.

What's amusing here is that if the show had been created by straights, it would undoubtedly be considered homophobic, offensive, and be accused of propagating gay stereotypes. GLAAD would be calling for a boycott, and people would die. But, since the show-runners are gay and it's airing on a gay television network, it suddenly becomes okay. I'm not exactly sure how to feel about that, but you can watch a funny trailer for the show here and, for the braver of you, the first five minutes of episode 1 is here.

• Emergency! Friday I got to make a midnight run to the emergency room as a chauffeur. Again. As it was a Friday night in the middle of summer, there was a wild assortment of party-related emergencies, including underage alcohol poisoning, and a girl in the room next door that tried to O.D. (who didn't want to provide her last name, because she didn't want her parents called). After they were forced to take a urine sample so they could treat her, the conversation went something like this...

NURSE: Okay... what are you on? What did you take?
MOANING GIRL: Nothing.
NURSE: What. Drugs. Did. You. Take?
MOANING GIRL: No drugs.
NURSE: NO drugs?!?
MOANING GIRL: NO DRUGS!! I'M NOT TAKING DRUGS!!

And fifteen minutes later the nurse finds the doctor in the hall...

NURSE: Here's the test results.
DOCTOR: Well there's a big surprise...

Yes, big surprise, IT WAS DRUGS!! Who lies about doing drugs after they've had urine sample taken? Oh, I don't know... A DRUG ADDICT MAYBE? For big stupid fun entertainment, nothing beats an E.R. on the weekend.

But I'm in no hurry to go back any time soon.

My daughter suffered from undiagnosed vomiting (Gall bladder? Cyclic vomiting syndrome? Any takers?) for about two years. Needless to say, we have all kinds of fun emergency room stories.

At one hospital, *after* giving my daughter morphine for pain, they did a drug test. When the test came back positive for opiates, a drug counselor came in to lecture my daughter about her use of recreational drugs, saying this whole “vomiting thing” was a scam.

Needless to say, this woman got an earful. 🙂

  2. Suzy says:

The Closer is tiresome to me. Okay, we get it, she’s always going to figure out – within her lightbulb moment where someone is talking about cheese or recycling- who is the bad guy. There’s always a bad guy. She always figures it out. Next.

You want best new drama of the season? Army Wives. Just because it’s on Lifetime don’t make the mistake of not watching this. It puts The Closer to shame. (among others)

  3. claire says:

I love The Closer- I’ve been watching it since the beginning. So good. Psych makes me laugh- their interactions with Jules do it for me. And Rescue Me keeps sucking me in even though I don’t like any of the characters.

I’m looking forward to Lili Taylor’s show State of Mind which starts tonight on Lifetime. I know… Lifetime, but it’s Lili Taylor! Looks funny…

Not sure if I’m going to be into Holly Hunter’s new show, but I’ll check it out along with Glen Close’s. Hope Flash Gordon is cool.

These days, I’m digging summer tv more than the regular season. Yea for cable letting shows take more chances.

  4. Dave2 says:

Ajooja… Reminds me of the time I went to the E.R. with kidney stones and they made me sit in agony while they checked to make sure I wasn’t a drug addict looking for a fix or something. Boy was THAT fun.

Suzy… But couldn’t you say that about most of the shows on television? I mean, take C.S.I. for example – of course there’s going to be that moment where they figure it out… but it’s how you get to that point that makes a show worth watching. The Closer builds up to it brilliantly, and is why I love to watch it so much. I have seen “Army Wives” and think it’s a pretty good show… but I’m already a fan of “The Unit” which seems to be a better “fit” for me. 🙂

Claire… I love Holly Hunter, but am a bit skeptical about her new show. The previews kind of remind me of the failed Jeff Goldblum series “Raines” which I didn’t care for very much.

  5. Avitable says:

What about Monk? That’s a good show, too, and Traylor Howard is even better than Bitty Schram.

  6. whit says:

Psyche is a very funny show.

I didn’t know they sold gay legos.

  7. Dan says:

Not to mention that it was Friday the 13th… No graphic of bad monkey playing the role of a black cat?

  8. Lewis says:

You’re totally killing me with that clip…..I’m rolling! On the floor, looking for quiche crumbs under the couch…..This is one of the funniest things ever….how did I ever escape seeing this before now? God, I hate living under a rock…….
PS….Stay the hell out of the ER’s. Especially at midnight.

  9. kilax says:

This is the first time in 5 years I have had a tv in my house… and I have no idea what shows are good! I haven’t even seen Veronica Mars! Have you heard about that Bionic Woman show?

  10. Robin says:

    Funny clip!

Although I am trying to unchain myself from my TiVo, I have added Traveler to my season passes. I can’t wait to see who is really the mastermind behind the bombing, but you are right, it will probably be canceled before anything is resolved.

  11. Hilly says:

What? You had to work today too? Now I really double puffy heart you for saving me!

I watched Season One of The Closer but chose not to renew ;). Mostly it is because there are other shows that I just like better, like Army Wives, as someone else said! I was totally thrilled to see Tim Curry on Psych the other night, along with Shawn and Gus. And bad news…this season of Traveler is the only season there is and it wraps up in two weeks!

Oh and…for a few years, I used to be the friend that always accompanied someone and/or their kids to the ER so yeah, I know how you feel.

  12. kapgar says:

No need to worry about Traveler being canceled just yet, the season finale is next week. Far too soon in my opinion. Right there with you on that, Burn Notice, and Psych.

  13. Iron Fist says:

Holy crap, thanks so much for sharing that Happiest Gay Couple show. I watched the preview and that was hysterical.

  14. Wayne says:

I can see it now – I’ll be dead in front of my computer with a huge smirk on my face. They’ll think it’s porn, but after they take a browsercache sample, they’ll realize I had blogs in my system. The blogography kind (we all know it’s the worse).

And any of you who say you don’t do it, or don’t do it much are just in too much denial.

  15. Mooselet says:

We don’t get any of those shows her except “Rescue Me”, and it’s only in the second season, which we own on DVD. Sometimes I hate Aussie television.

In my past life (pre-kids)as a nurse we had a teenage boy, 17 I think, fake amnesia for two days because he didn’t want his parents to know he’d been admitted to the hospital for a drug OD. Needless to say Mommy & Daddy were not happy when he finally ‘fessed up, nor were the police who spent all kinds of time looking for him when Mommy & Daddy reported him missing. Served the little bastard right.

  16. Suzy says:

D2, you’re right about all the shows being formulaic. CSI and Law and Order etc. But CSI at least has weird forensic stuff.

I think I hate The Closer because they put a smarty pants woman in charge of getting the baddie but then have to give her the “my parents don’t know I’m living with a guy” thing so men don’t think she’s THAT together. Over it. 2007.

I love Rescue Me but always forget when it’s on. I’m going to post a pic of me and Denis Leary on my blog this week that was taken back in NYC when we were chosen up and coming comics for Men’s Guide To Fashion. He’s a great guy.

  17. borysSNORC says:

Rick and Steve looks like a fun little show… and again… more US content that isn’t available in Australia for love or money. Can’t acquire it legally – so will just have to wait for the friendly neighborhood pirating community to come to our rescue 😐
    RMB
    Mommy… what’s a Michigan Mop Job?

  18. Bre says:

I adore “Rescue Me!” But then, I suppose that’s no big surprise… if I’m around the firehouse when it’s on I always pop back into the break room because they’re all sure to be watching it. Let me tell you, some things on that show are extreme, but some are dead accurate!

  19. Jeff says:

Giving Happiest Gay Couple episodes as a gift is a great idea! Suddenly I see all my friend’s birthday present problems solved. At least currently they’re my friends.

  20. Patty says:

I don’t watch much tv. That’s what you get when you have a kid.
That was a funny clip about the gay men. I thought it was hilarious when the gay woman and the gay man were talking dirt about each other and calling each other names behind their back. Yes, wrong on so many levels but it is funny.
Bummer about the ER, good you were there to help.

  21. sue says:

I like the Closer and Burn Notice… and the new Showtime series Meadowlands. All good summer watching.

Found you through Hilly (your “guest” gig) and came by to check out the main. I’m enjoying it very much and hope you don’t mind if I link ya?

  22. Ben says:

Is ‘The Closer’ an action packed look into the world of corporate mergers? A world where blackberrys and silk ties are merely the beginning? A world where the risk is great…but the leveraged marker forecast for 3Q09 is even better? A world where the difference of a decimal point can mean millions of dollars of profit—or millions of layoffs?

If so, I’d watch it. Anything for some T&A.
