The Best Thing I Ever Ate

Last Updated on Monday, January 18th, 2021

Dave!I've been a lot of places and eaten a lot of food. Here's a list of some of the best things I've ever eaten from around the globe.

THIS PAGE IS IN PROGRESS

ITALIAN

  1. Fettuccine Alfredo, Alfredo alla Scrofa in Rome. The restaurant that originated this simple dish of parmesan, butter, and noodles is the best I have ever tasted. They mix it at your table and it is sublime in every possible way.
  2. Pasta Salvi, Salvi's Bistro in Columbus, Ohio (closed?).
This insanely delicious pasta dish is lasagna noodles alternated with white sauce that's refrigerated, breaded, deep-fried, then topped with red sauce and mozzerella, then baked to perfection. It's so creamy that it practically melts in your mouth. There is nothing quite like it but, alas, I think Salvi's is gone now.
  3. Cacio e Pepe, XXX, Rome, Italy.
    This is the stuff.

MAC & CHEESE

  1. World's Best Mac & Cheese, Beecher's Handmade, Pike Place Market, Seattle, WA.
When they call it "World's Best," they are not lying.
  2. Ultimate Macaroni & Cheese, Icon Grill, Seattle, WA (closed).
This is (was) beautiful macaroni pasta smothered in four cheeses, topped with a crunchy bread topping and a "tomato snow"... then served with a little carafe of molten cheese to pour over the top. They closed in 2017, I think, and I still miss it.

PIZZA

  1. The Da Vinci, David's Pizza, Spokane, WA.
This pizza is my favorite by a wide margin (cheese pizza with a swirl of pesto topped with feta cheese, baked, then raw tomato slices put on top). Crust is sublime, being both crisp and chewy. I have eaten a lot of pizza around the world and the restaurant 3 hours from my house is where I found my bliss. Go figure.
  2. White Pizza, Grimaldi's Pizzaria, Brooklyn, New York City, NY.
    This is the stuff.
  3. Butternut Squash & Cranberry Pizza, OTTO, Portland, ME.
    This is the stuff.
  4. White Pizza, Secret Pizza, The Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas, NV.
    This is the stuff.
  5. Buttercrust Cheese & Black Olive, Pizano's, Chicago, IL.
You'd THINK that any Chicago pizza I put on my list would be deep dish... but Pizano's thin "butter crust" is the one I love hone I'm in town. Super-crispy. Makes the whole pizza.

MEXICAN

  1. Cheese Enchiladas ala Vesta, My Grandma Vesta, San Luis Obispo, CA.
    The good stuff
  2. Sweet Potato Enchilada Plate, South, Leavenworth, WA.
    The good stuff.

ASIAN

  1. XXX, Le Thai, Freemont, Las Vegas, NV

BURGER

  1. Impossible Whopper, Burger King.
  2. ORIGINAL Streamliner, Johnny Rockets, national chain (discontinued).
The original "Streamliner" which is a Boca Burger that I always customized by requesting NO grilled onions, NO mustard, and REGULAR (not wheat) bun, was my go-to burger for ages. They eventually discontinued it and replaced it with something entirely different which is complete shit by comparison. Oh well. I'll always have the memories.
  3. ORIGINAL Veggie, 25 Degrees, Chicago, IL (discontinued) .
Sadly, they replaced their amazing veggie patty... which I think had beets as the primary ingredient... with some kind of bean patty. It's nice, but nothing compared to the original burger I first ate here back in 2014.
  4. ORIGINAL McVeggie Deluxe, McDonalds, Times Square, New York City, NY (discontinued).

VEGGIE DOG

  1. Puka Dog, Puka Dog, Koloa, Kauai, HI.
    Sublime.
  2. Chicago-Style America's Dog, Chicago, IL.
The only "traditional" hot dog that matters.
  3. Vegetarian Wurst, München Haus Bavarian Grill, Leavenworth, WA.
Come for the wonderful grilled "field roast" dog, stay for the mustard bar.

SANDWICH

DESSERT

  1. Marie's Apple Pie, My Grandma Marie, Central WA.
    XXX
  2. Blueberry (Crumble/Poundcake/Whatever), Flatbread Company, Portland, ME.
    This is the stuff.
  3. Hundred Layer Donut, Five Daughters Bakery, Nashville, TN.
    This is the stuff.

GELATO/ICE CREAM

  1. Stracciatella Sugar Cone, Gelateria Dondoli, San Gimignano, Italy.
    This is the stuff.
  2. Stracciatella Sugar Cone, Trinità Snack Bar (on Via Sistina), Rome, Lazio, Italy.
The first gelato I ever had is still one of my favorites. I'm sure it's just purchased from some distributor, but it doesn't matter. Creamy, dreamy, delicious, and I make a trip here every time I'm in Rome.

BREAKFAST

  1. Banana & Macadamia French Toast, Kihei Caffe, Kihei, Maui, HI.
