Dave!"They can be a great people, Kal-El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way."

I don't know why that famous line from Marlon Brando in Superman The Movie was echoing through my mind when I woke up this morning. Probably because I have not yet seen Superman Returns, though I want to quite badly. Perhaps that will be on the agenda in New York or Chicago, since they have far better theaters than I have here. Local cinemas are pretty much crap... with poor screens, uncomfortable seats, and sound systems so bad you can barely hear dialogue. Good movies always mean a three-hour drive to Seattle, but so few films are worth it now-a-days.

Dave Fourth

I am spending my Independence Day holiday working — but, to everybody else, have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Ah yes, movies became “kinder surprise“. Like the Chocolate, we know that we will spend 2 hours sitting to forget the everyday life.
Like the Surprise, we do not know if we will like it or not !
According to wikipedia, US does not know this funny egg. It is a pity !!! 😉

Although I was not educated in the culture of “comics book” (but rather in the culture of French and Belgian “comic strip” = “Bande Dessinée = BD), I also wait impatiently on July 12 to see Superman Returns with the sublime Kevin Spacey…

I know how much it is hard to work while “the others” have fun. I am also in this case. I support you.
So safe and happy Fourth July !
Je te souhaite un Quatre Juillet sûr et heureux. Joyeux Quatre Juillet !!! 🙂

  2. karla says:

happy 4th to you, too. Sorry you have to work, but it seems alot of my friends are.

I still can’t believe Nicholas Cage names his kid Kal El.

  3. Karl says:

Happy 4th, dude. I’m raising up a pint in your honor, secretly mocking that you have to work.

  4. adena says:

    Happy 4th to you, too!

  5. Kevin says:

A happy one back atcha. And the quote is perfection. Nice choice. Happy you shared it.

  6. Is that Happy Toast in your Gravatar? Since I am Native I will not celebrate the 4th, but I will celebrate your Happy Toast.

Have a good one and travel safely!

  7. Bec says:

Happy Independence Day from an ex=tyrant! Now take a break and go barbecue something!

  8. Happy 4th! Thank goodness you threw off the yoke of British oppression only to then worship Elizabeth Hurley, oh the cruel irony! But then again, maybe she will get US citizenship like every other Brit of note.

  9. Charred says:

    Happy 4th!

I don’t know if I’ll see the new Superman. “Truth, justice, and all that,” just doesn’t have the same ring as “truth, justice, and the American Way.”

  10. James says:

That line got my spine all tingly and gave me goosebumps one of the times it was said.

You know its a good line when that happens.

  11. EDDIE says:

Sorry to hear you had to work today but I pray for you that you can have fire work with Elizabeth Hurley later.

  12. Therese, RN says:

I too am working the 4th. But then, people get sick every day of the year. Do computers need new graphics every day of the year too?

  13. Avitable says:

    Duuuuuude. Go see it. Twice.

And Charred, Superman shouldn’t be a nationalist.

  14. Wayne Hall says:

We bought $9 worth of fireworks this year. It was an extremely rainy 4th in Austin. We picked up sparklers, mini roman candles, little spinny things, a box of fountain sparkler thingies, disco flashy things, etc.

We didn’t even use half of our supply, and still my 4yr wakes up this morning all excited and asks in his inimitable words-not-so-well-formed-yet style, ‘can we do fireworks again? Let’s do fireworks _right now_’

  15. Jens K. Kiel says:

Happy 4th of July to you, too.

  16. JoeBruin88 says:

I really liked Superman 1 and 2, but the new Superman Returns was kinda boring. I do plan to see it again because I had to leave to go to the bathroom and missed abut 5 minutes of it.

  17. NetChick says:

Happy fireworks day, Dave! Sorry you had to work, but just think… You are making bucks while everyone else is sitting on their asses getting fat on BBQ offerings!

  18. Charred says:

    Avi,
Superman has ALWAYS been the ultimate patriot.

  19. James says:

Charred, what about Captain America? He seems more ultimate-patriot-like.

  20. Charred says:

    Different comic book universe.

CA is Marvel, Superman is DC, so IMHO it’s apples and oranges.

  21. EDDIE says:

I think Dave passed out from too much work…

  22. Avitable says:

    Charred,

Superman hasn’t, in comics. In TV and movies, yeah. But in comics, especially in the last 10-15 years, he’s always been a global protector and not a blind patriot.

  23. No post for the 5th!?! You okay? It’s been a long time since I noticed that you missed a day blogging…

  24. babyoog says:

In case you didn’t realize it, it’s now Thursday, July 6. If you’re still working, I think you need a Superman break!

  25. Charred says:

    Avi,
Yes, and I have never liked it.

DC abandoned a trait that was fundamental to the character, and the franchise hasn’t been the same since.

  26. Avitable says:

Charred, being American is not fundamental to the character. In fact, it’s rather shortsighted to assume that he would have a blind loyalty to one country.

It’s better that he stands for ideals, not for President Shrub.
