I miss reading. I used to read a lot. Like... really a lot.
I'd easily tear through 25 books a year, and it wasn't unheard of to do double that. I'm a fairly quick reader, so a book a week is a piece of cake if the material isn't too challenging (Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco was insane and took over a month to get through).
But then stuff started getting in the way.
Video games got more complex and time consuming.
Work got more and more involved.
Social media became a time-suck of epic proportions.
Now-a-days the only time I get to read is when I travel, and even that's diminishing. I'm either catching up with movies on my iPad, using in-flight wi-fi, or playing with my Nintendo 3DS. For a while I thought audio-books were a way to keep "reading" in my life, but so few books are enjoyable to me that way (David Sedaris, for example, is better on audio-book, but good sci-fi is almost impossible for me to get through).
In 2013 I read three books.
Pathetic.
And so I've set a goal for myself to read six books in 2014.
Wish me luck.

So I guess you don’t want to hear that I read 136 books last year
Ack! I agree and have been thinking about this lately as I think about goals for my new year – I rarely read anymore. Gross. It’s definitely at the top of my list.
Hi, Dave 🙂
Good luck on the 6 books!
Looking through my weekly calendar, I only read 2 books last year, both on basketball and both in April. I’ll try to read 6 books too, and not all of them on basketball.
After getting my Kindle I’ve found I read a lot more. Last year was the year I really got back into reading again. It was like “hello old friend”.
You travel a lot so maybe grab a Kindle and read on planes? I dunno, maybe you do that already and that’s how you read your 3 books.
I can’t quite figure out what changed, but after a few years of barely reading, something unlocked in 2013 and I read a ton. 4-5 books by Neal Stephenson and 4-5 other cyberpunk books.
It helped that I had a friend saying, “now read this one,” every time I finished a book. I just made more time and worked on getting my reading muscles back. I also went back to reading on paper, which is more successful for me than reading on my Kindle.
6 books sounds like a great goal for this year.
I am finding that I read more on my iPad than I do physical books. While I love the touch, feel and viewing of a physical book, I tend to leave the books in places where I am not at. I have my iPad with me in more places and find that I can sneak out a chapter in between other things I do throughout the day.
