Equal

Posted on Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Dave!"I don't hate gay people, I'm just supporting the sanctity of marriage."

And so the President of these United States of America finally grew a pair and came out in support of something he already supported back in 1996 (but then pretended he didn't support for presidential political points)... same-sex marriage.

And while I don't think I will ever understand how two people with the same genitals getting married affects anybody else's marriage, I admit to being a bit puzzled that President Obama picks now to come out of the equality closet. While I'd like to think that he's doing it because it's the Right Thing, I harbor no illusions that it's politically motivated in one way or another.

Still... it's a start. And it is the Right Thing.

This video that's been burning up the internet explains why...

And here's where the whole tired excuse of "I don't hate gay people, I'm just supporting the sanctity of marriage" completely falls apart.

  • I can never be convinced that anybody would willingly cause somebody in this much pain any additional suffering if they didn't hate them.
  • I can never be convinced that two consenting adults being able to celebrate their love in marriage destroys the "sanctity" of anything.

Regardless of a person's beliefs (religious or otherwise), the only "attack" on "traditional marriage" that cannot be denied or argued is divorce. Using same-sex marriage as a scapegoat for any matrimonial failures is just an excuse to discriminate.

And a poor one at that.

  1. That video made me so sad and angry. Where I live, it’s legal for anyone to marry anyone else (of legal age). I wish this was true everywhere. There’s not good reason to cause this much pain in anyone’s life.

  2. Kyra Wilson says:

You know, I don’t even believe that divorce is an attack on marriage, unless you’re talking about the old-traditional-marriage-days where women were trapped forever more unless their husbands booted them out with the church’s nod of consent. In that case, I’m all for attacking traditional marriage! 🙂

Personally? I don’t think marriage is something that CAN be attacked. It’s a decision between two people, optional, and that’s it. It’s a legal status, and one every single person should have a right to – no matter who they want to marry.

  3. Alexander says:

Yes, as has been said far and wide, if NOM and their ilk were really serious about the sanctity of marriage they’d be fighting for outlawing divorce. But since so many on their side are serial adulterers (cough, cough, NEWT), we all know that will never happen.

  4. Howard says:

I so want to gay marry you right now.

    • Dave2 says:

Well, Washington is on its way to legalizing marriage equality… if I change my orientation between now and then, you should move up and we’ll make it official! Then Cameron can hunt me down and kill me! 🙂

  5. martymankins says:

While there’s a small part of me wondering why it took till now for Obama to announce his support, I am happy that it happened and glad that it’s now out there, that the GOP and right wing will be falling all over themselves with this subject – taking complete focus off other important issues and hoping that people will be human enough to notice and support someone else beside the Romney bot.

  6. Yeah that was an unexpected pleasant surprise from President Obama. Made me proud to live here.

Of course this means the far-right will now be forced into defending bigotry which in turn will hopefully light a fire under the democrat base in response. Will be an interesting election year.

  7. claire says:

I’m puzzled by his timing too. It’s not like I had a better candidate to vote for. Also a bit annoyed at how psyched everyone seems to be about his statement (well, those who already support gay marriage). It is a step in the right direction but it doesn’t mean much as long as he still says it’s a state’s issue to decide.
