Eclipsed

Posted on Monday, December 20th, 2010

Dave!Yay! It's a lunar eclipse!

Boo! I live in shitty Central Washington where it's overcast and snowy.

So when I run outside to look at the fabulousness occurring, this is what I see...

Pretty much a black sky...

Which sucks, because THIS is what everybody else gets to look at...

A beautiful lunar eclipse

It reminds me of the "super spectacular" total solar eclipse that happened when I was in Middle School... probably, oh I dunno... 1979 or 1980. Our school didn't have fancy tinted plastic viewers so you actually got to LOOK at the sun being eclipsed. Oh no... we got to poke a small hole in a piece of paper and hold it up to the sun so a beam of eclipsing light shined on a piece of paper. This is how I got to see the awesomeness of the "once in a lifetime big event"...

Pinhole viewing of the solar eclipse.

Which sucks, because THIS is what everybody else got to look at (right before they got super-powers)...

A spectacular fucking view of a full solar eclipse!

It's like I'm in Middle School all over again.

Middle School so totally sucks.

UPDATE: For anybody who missed it like me, there's a fantastic video over at Vimeo!

We had partially clear conditions last night, but when I woke myself up to check it out it was around 20 degrees. Too cold to check it out and then then try to go back to sleep. 🙁

  2. Megan says:

We had a gorgeous night for it, but I slept through it. I should have just set an alarm because I feel like ass today anyway – at least it would have been worth it to see the eclipse. 🙁

  3. Yeah well… the Eldest and myself waited up for that shit. Our local news said that 1:10am would be prime viewing. So we went out at 1:05am and waited. And waited. And waited. We waited toll about 1:30am….. nothing. I don’t know if we were too late or too early, but either way we didn’t see the awesomeness either. I’m sure all my neighbors thought we were insane though, the Eldest and I making jokes outside in the dead of night such as “Go, go Gadget Eclipse.” and “Someone get me Taylor Lautner & Robert Pattinson, they stole our eclipse!”

  4. We had nothing but clouds here too so got to see bugger all.

  5. kapgar says:

We didn’t see jack here in Chicagoland, either. Too much snow.

  6. Mad William says:

I had the same experience. Both in middle school and last night.
The one week of the year that southern Cal has clouds and rain, was this week.

  7. Julie says:

We had an absolutely gorgeous cloudless night and we were able to go out and see it. Unfortunately it was -27 degrees celcius, so we didn’t stay long!

  8. claire says:

The thing to notice in that video is that the time lapse period was 4 hours.

I shot a time lapse of a lunar eclipse in grad school and it kind of sucked the joy out of it for me. So cold! Would’ve been nice to see it in progress, but it was overcast here as usual.

I’m with you on the solar eclipse though. Rest assured you were not the only one looking at a pinpoint projection. Cheap bastards.

  9. *lynne* says:

Cloudy conditions over here too, so I didn’t stay up … I *did* wake up to pee around 2am which would have been the peak blood moon time here, but I didn’t think about it at all, otherwise I might have peeked out the window to see if the clouds had gone, if anything could be seen. Oh well. Thanks for the vid link, it’s great1 The accompanying music is very appropriate, in a very old school kind of way 🙂

Now THIS would have been SUPER SPECTACULAR

Eclipse pinhole light in the shape of the Apple Computer logo!
