Lull

Posted on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Dave!Every year I tell myself that I'm going to take a blog vacation the week between Christmas and New Years, and every year I forget about it. Instead, I just slog through the blogging lull with lame crap that I'd just as soon forget because it's always the exact same thing: I'm working my guts out and don't have the time or energy to write about anything when most everybody is avoiding blogs anyway.

Especially today, when I came home early from work because I was sick. It feels like food poisoning, but I don't know of anything I could have eaten that would have poisoned me. All I've had is a Carnation Instant Breakfast drink, a handful of Tim's Cascade Potato Chips, a can of Coke, and some Uncle Ben's Brown & Wild Rice. Perhaps it's not food poisoning and I've got radiation poisoning or swine flu or something.

Anyway... since tomorrow I will be looking back at all things 2009 here on Blogography, I thought that today I'd take a look ahead. Here's just a few things I'm looking forward to in 2010...

• Whatever Apple Is Cooking Up Next. Whether it's the much-rumored iSlate tablet computer... or something completely different... there always seems to be something really cool just around the corner for an Apple Whore like me.

&bull The iPhone Being Unchained from AT&T: If Apple has any sense at all, they won't renew their exclusivity with the bad service poster-boy that has become AT&T. To be honest, I can recall one... just one... problem with their service when trying to make a call to another iPhone user in Las Vegas this year. Other than that, I've had no worse service than I've had with Verizon. But competition would be a good thing, and I can only hope iPhone service will get even a little bit cheaper because of it.

• Blog Parties: There are two blogger events I cannot miss each year: TequilaCon and Avitaween. The venue for TequilaCon 2010 was just announced as Vancouver on April 24th, and I'm already counting the days.

• Iron Man 2. One of my favorite movies of 2008 was Iron Man and I'm hoping that the sequel is just as good.

• Movie Magic. In addition to Iron Man 2, we also get Tron Legacy, Toy Story 3, Arrested Development: The Film, and the massive casting coupe that is The Expendables, starring Sylvester Stalone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, and the late Brittany Murphy. Good times.

• Invincible. I'm kind of falling out of touch with comic books lately, but one I never miss is Robert Kirkman's Invincible. This year "The Viltrumite War" which has been anticipated for nearly 70 issues, finally begins. I have no doubt that it will be the comic event of the year.

• Re-Reading Calvin and Hobbes. Every time I see The Complete Calvin and Hobbes sitting on my bookshelf, I have to resist the urge to read it. I haven't read it since it was released in 2005, and am trying my best to forget as much about the strip as I can so it will feel new again. But I could never forget the magic. 2010 is the year.

• Someplace New. Every year I set a goal to travel to someplace I've never been before... this year is no different. I have no idea where I'll end up, but that's the best part.

• The Flying Car. Because, seriously, isn't it about time?

• Another Year of Blogography. Yeah, I know. Blogs are dying all over the place, people are writing in their blogs less and less, and new kids on the block like Twitter are taking over. But how can I give this up?

A new year is just a day away...

Whenever I see another blog bite the dust I start screaming at the screen, “WHAT’S WRONG YOU CAN’T HANDLE IT!?!?!? HUH?? IS BLOGGING GETTING TOO HAWD FO DA WITTLE BABY??? WELL SCREW YOU!” and then I just keep doing my thing.

I’m glad I’m not alone in that.

  2. Robin says:

Happy New Year, Dave. Hope you feel better…..

  3. Avitable says:

My reception in Vegas was so ridiculous – during a two-hour phone conversation, my service must have dropped no less than 20 times. And I was in my hotel room the whole time! Also, hearing about AT&T cutting off phone sales to NYC annoys me too. I’d like to see what the competition does to improve their level of service.

Other movies I’m looking forward to in 2010: Alice in Wonderland, A-Team, and the new Twilight movie! Squee!!

  4. kilax says:

I really hope Iron Man 2 is as good as the first! We loved the first one. It was our fave film of 2008.

Now that I think about it, it does seem like people are posting less and less. I have been reading so many different blogs lately, I didn’t notice!

  5. Hilly says:

I think that those of us who truly *do* blog for ourselves can find ways to still blog even though the trend is steering others away from blogging. I just revamped my outlook on the whole thing and use my blog when I need to write a lot then use other mediums when I want to connect with people. I think that is the key…blogs used to be more about connecting and now they aren’t. It’s sad but true.

I can’t wait to have more Davey-Joe time in 2010. I’m not even exaggerating either. 🙂

  6. kapgar says:

I want to write more in my blog this coming year, but I’m afraid to make the promise and then, ultimately, fail.

  7. whitenoise says:

I suppose that there’s some irony in the fact that I read your post on Facebook and not here on your blog… Yes, the blog world has slowed as many jumped off the bandwagon. But, just like when people predicted the demise of books as technologies such as telephone and moving pictures became commonplace- there will always be a place for blogging. I’m glad that you still blog on a daily basis.

-wishing you the very best for 2010- Happy New Year Dave!

  8. martymankins says:

Iron Man was my favorite movie of 2008. I am so pumped for Iron Man 2. I have watched the trailer so many times, I’ve lost count.

I would venture that I may actually switch from my long time Sprint loyalty if the iPhone moves to say T-Mobile… anything but AT&T.

    TC10 – yes, I will be there.

Calvin and Hobbes remains my top favorite comic of all time. I do have a love for Peanuts and others, but the genius of Calvin and Hobbes will never be replaced.

  9. Finn says:

You and I share a love of all things Apple. I can’t wait to see what they do next either. I’ve been with ATT for many years and have never had a problem, but cheaper service would be wonderful. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

There’s going to be an Arrested Development movie? There is a God…

  10. the internet needs blogography!

(hope your 2010 brings good health, happiness and lots of safe travels, dave. oh! and no gum smacking whores!!)

  11. muskrat says:

Happy New Year…I hope to make 1 or 2 of those events in 2010, too.

I was actually looking at Rob Kroese’s “humor blogs” site not long ago and was thinking about how different the listing of top blogs looks now and how much the numbers have dropped in terms of votes for posts. It’s a little sad.

If I could write blog posts in Atlanta traffic like I can do with Twitter, I’d still write 5x/week like I did in 2008. But alas…

  12. Lisa says:

I love all things Apple too, and can’t wait to see what comes out this year. My AT&T contract is up this year, but I don’t want to renew in the hope that the exclusivity goes away. I am so tired of the dropped calls!

I wanted to make it to TC this year, but I just don’t know if it’s in the cards. I’d like to make it to one event this year at least.

    Happy New Year!

  13. Kawika says:

    Hooray for Apple Whores!

That’s one club in which i proudly proclaim membership.

  14. kyle says:

i feel the same when i see the full works of bloom county. perhaps that’s a good thing to read today!

    happy new year.

  15. B.E. Earl says:

I’m no Apple whore, but I am interested in whatever iTablet they come up with as an e-reader/whatever. I got Gia a Kindle for Christmas, but it looks so…2005 or something.

Anywho, may you have the Happiest of New Years!

  16. John says:

I firmly belive that Apple needs to let everybody in, not just Verizon. The cost will definitly go down, and I am a huge fan of capitalistic competion. But people should be warned that some of the iPhone’s features only work on AT&T. For example the highly advertised using the iPhone apps and internet while in a call. On verizon, you cannot browse the web while on a call.(has to do with the way that their coverage works) So while you can use non-internet apps while on a call, that is kind of pointless without internet. In fact, you can only do that on AT&T.

    • Dave2 says:

I think that Apple and AT&T are making the advanced features of their 3G network perfectly clear in their new advertising.

The truth is… I don’t know that I would switch away from AT&T. I have said many times that I am generally happy with their service. With that one exception in Vegas, it’s worked flawless for me. What I want is better pricing. I think that AT&T was gouging iPhone users out of necessity in the beginning because they are such high data users and a strain on resources. But now that other networks and devices are catching up, they are gouging iPhone users just because they can… where else can iPhone users go? Of course they need to work on expanding their 3G network and fixing the myriad of problems that plague their coverage in major metropolitan areas… but that’s THEIR problem. If other carriers can have great coverage and charge less for smartphones with high data use… then AT&T needs to stay competitive with that. In fact, as a gesture of good-will to their customers, they should be matching rates NOW instead of when they HAVE to. One thing is for sure… extra 3G features or not… if I can get better service for cheaper, I will be switching when my contract is up.

  17. Sybil Law says:

    Happy New Year!!!
I am seriously waiting on that flying car, too.
    xoxo

  18. I dunno, I’ve had AT&T for ages – back when it was Cingular and I’ve never had any issues whatsoever. Maybe just lucky that I live in a largish metro area?

Can’t wait to have a play with the iSlate/iTablet/iWhatever when it comes out. Maybe a Christmas 2010 purchase 😉

And good effin’ lord, why don’t we have flying cars or at least jetpacks. We were promised jetpacks right?

  19. bo says:

    Never give up.
    Never surrender.

    Happy New Year Dave!

  20. Iron Fist says:

I think this next year will be the year I have to get back into comics again. Everytime you mention Invincible I remember the one issue I picked up years ago and how much I enjoyed it, and talking about the series with you at Comic-Con.

I suppose this next year should be the one where I get back into blogging, too. I’ve been a big time slacker lately.

    • Dave2 says:

Start with the Invincible trade paperback collections… they’re all good, but starting at the beginning is a much more satisfying read. 🙂

  21. Steve in NH says:

    Dave,

Thank you for all you do. Reading Blogography has become an essential part of my day. I’d miss it sorely were it to stop.

    Happy New Year

    Steve

  22. On AT&T service:
Gotta say, I’m pretty disappointed with it. I can’t believe how much service cuts in and out, very disappointed. I’ve seen other AT&T phones conk out at the same time so I don’t think it’s my phone. My Sprint service that I gave up was rock solid.

Edge internet is crap, but it’s pretty rare that I get kicked over to that.

The AT&T 3G service is MUCH faster than Sprint’s though.
