Bullshit!

Posted on Monday, November 9th, 2009

Dave!Fellow bloggers have influenced me in more ways than I'll ever admit.

Most times.

Other times, like now when I have nothing else to blog about, I'm happy to admit anything.

Back in mid-October, Josh of ("Josh is Trashy" fame) ran across an old Richard Scarry book from his childhood called Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. His entry brought back all kinds of memories for me because I loved Richard Scarry books when I was a kid. They never displaced Curious George as my all-time favorite, but I spent a lot of time reading them because they were a lot of fun.

Anyway, Josh took a second look at the book and found out that some of the illustrations were actually pretty messed up when viewed from a more adult perspective. He added his own dialogue and hilarity ensued...

Genius!

It's the second illustration that changed my life. I loved it so much that I recreated it as my desktop picture...

Which is probably a bad thing, because it's been influencing my behavior. Whenever something crappy comes my way now, I stop everything and say "This is bullshit!"... All day long... Every day since...

DAVETOON: Lil' Dave drops his ice cream cone. THIS IS BULLSHIT!

DAVETOON: Lil' Dave's Cables are all tangled in a mess. THIS IS BULLSHIT!

DAVETOON: Lil' Dave gets a latte dumped on his head. THIS IS BULLSHIT!

DAVETOON: Bad Monkey cuts out Lil' Dave's heart with a knife. THIS IS BULLSHIT!

It's kind of amusing when I'm alone.

But a different story entirely when I'm in the middle of a business meeting and suddenly feel compelled to say "This is bullshit!" to a client or co-worker sitting at the table. It's even worse when you say it in the check-out line at the grocery store because the bitch ahead of you has 14 items in the "10 Items or Less" lane.

I can't help it. It works in just about every situatuon. Including other Richard Scarry illustrations...

If you want your life to be ruined too (thanks, Josh!) you should check out his original entry.

I was saying that all day yesterday….now I know where it came from. 🙂

  2. Hilly says:

Oooh I love Richard Scarry! Growing up, I had one of those Scarry Town playsets and seriously wanted to live there, haha. It would have been even more fun to live there with the newly added commentary, of course. 😉

  3. Sybil Law says:

    Haha! That is awesome!
It makes me want to re – narrate a bunch of comics I liked as a kid…

  4. Lisa says:

I loved the Richard Scarry Best Storybook Ever when I was a kid and I had completely forgotten about it. I spent a lot of summer nights with that book. Even as a kid I had the insomnia and I would stay up reading all night.

I think it’s up to 12 items or less now, even more Bullshit if you ask me!

    • Dave2 says:

Our local grocery is still at 10. But, then again, there are still people here wearing acid-washed jeans, so we might be a little behind the times…

  6. Faiqa says:

When my family gathers all in one place that’s sort of our motto.

  7. Tracy says:

I say “This is bullshit!” all the time, but it’s because a friend of mine used to get drunk at poker and yell it whenever he hit a bad beat. It was hilarious. “This is bullshit, man…bullshit!” It does work in every situation. Love the illustrations.

  8. Penelope says:

Oh my God this takes me back! I loved that little worm with the hat on! I just had to Google it and find a picture. Brilliant!

  9. martymankins says:

My favorite from the Richard Scarry books was Lowly Worm. He always made me smile as a kid.

“Fucking Bullshit” is what I use more often. I should adopt “This is bullshit!” to reduce the shock of using two swear words in public.

  11. David says:

I love how you gave Josh’s illustrations the Dave treatment. Awesome.

  12. Dee says:

What are the chances I’d run across this today?

  13. Michelle M. says:

I love it when blogs collide.

The kids in my pre-k class would fight over Richard Scarry books. I wonder what they would have thought of the josherized version?

  14. josh says:

I already tweeted dis, but I am honored you lurrrved my entry so much. I’ll be sure to try and ruin your life more frequently.

  15. Great–now, when reading children’s classics to my grandkids I’ll be internally changing the dialogue. Like when Piglet gives Eeyore a popped balloon for his birthday. No more making the best of a good situation, he’ll just delcare, “This is bullshit.” Or when the boy’s beloved velveteen rabbit is taken out to be burned because he’s germ infested. The little bunny lying in the rubbish heap is surely thinking, “This is bullshit.”

    This changes everything : )

  16. whall says:

I was totally expecting a little Davetoon of you installing Windows 7…

And please please please don’t let your friend do this to Frog and Toad.

  17. fracas says:

    Umm, frankly… this is bullshit.

    😉

  18. muskrat says:

I’ll have to share this with my 2-year-old.
