Dining

Posted on Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Dave!Living in the rural area I do is torture when it comes to dining out. There's nothing but burgers, pizzas, and burritos as far as the eye can see. We have very few ethnic restaurants (and they're rarely authentic). This is probably because most of the locals here haven't been exposed to great ethnic cuisine, and couldn't care less about it. I, on the other hand, have traveled quite a lot and know exactly what I'm missing. There are times I go insane because I'm craving some kind of food that's not available to me unless I drive three-and-a-half hours to Seattle.

Take Indian food, for example.

I love good Indian cuisine, mostly because it's an excitingly exotic option with plenty of choices for we vegetarians. Eggplant bharta with peas served over rice with a side of naan (Indian flatbread) is one of my most favorite dishes ever, and yet it simply doesn't exist here.

We finally got a decent Thai restaurant last year (Mai Lee Thai in East Wenatchee), a passable Sushi Bar with veggie options (Wasabi Sushi Bar also in East Wenatchee), and have a surprisingly good Vietnamese place that's been around a while (Cuc Tran Cafe in Wenatchee). We also have a fantastic South American restaurant, which is one of my absolute favorites (South in Leavenworth).

And that's about it.

French? No. Tapas? No. Moroccan? No. Tex-Mex? No. Greek/Mediterranean? No. Tibetan? No. Cajun? No. Creole? No. Mongolian? Kind of. Italian? Yes, but I have yet to find any Italian food here that I actually enjoy (I once ordered Fettucini Alfredo and got a plate of watery noodles with bacon on top). As for a vegetarian restaurant? BWAH HA HA HAAA HA!!

So when I say that I ended up having a bowl of Cocoa Puffs and a tub of chocolate pudding for dinner at 9:00pm because nothing else sounded good... now you know why.

There's only so much pizza and burritos you can eat.

Cocoa Puffs and chocolate pudding, however, are forever.

We have good Mexican food here, but that’s about it.

Now coco puffs sound pretty good right now, only I don’t have any. Thanks Dave.

  2. Chrissi says:

I think that it is just HORRIBLE that there are 3 Shari’s restaurants in Wenatchee too!

Are you considering the Wok About to be Mongolian?

  3. Robin says:

Bacon? On top of fettuccine alfredo? Scary…

  4. Sue says:

I can DEFINITELY relate to this one. I don’t even have a clue where to go to get anything ethnic. Yeah, sure Erie, PA might have a few things… and I’m not talking about frakkin’ Olive Garden either. I also sorely miss Indian food and Thai. Mmmm.

  5. Naaaaaaaaaaan!

Also, I didn’t have Chinese food until I moved to Portland. A guy I was dating took me out for Chinese when I was 23 and he didn’t believe me that I’d never had it before. He said I was a liar and it caused a fight.

    🙂 I feel your pain.

  6. DutchBitch says:

Welllll, it’s CLEARLY time you got your ass to Amsterdam and we’ll do Davesterdam… What would you like? Tapas, Indian, Moroccan, Thai, Eritrean, Brazilian, Indonesian? I could go on for hours…

  7. Sybil Law says:

I could practically live on naan. Luckily, I live in a place with a lot of choices. Problem is, I usually cook at home. I prefer it.
Pudding sounds so good right now, though!

  8. Kailey says:

We have lots and lots and lots of good restaurants of all cuisines, the trouble is they are all tourist-priced so I rarely eat out. I love me some chocolate pudding for dinner!

  9. Miss Ann Thrope says:

I stopped at “couldn’t care less” because I couldn’t love you you any more than I do right now. ~swoon~

While I am totally known for bastardising the English language and kinda making it up as I go along, “could care less” is a huge peeve of mine. Huge. I actually heard…out loud…an anchor say it on the freaking news!

I love you for being unable to care more.

  10. Dave2 says:

Oh I hear that. I have an annoying habit of correcting people who mistakenly say “I could care less”… usually by saying “if you could care less, then this must be really important to you!” I’m a bastard like that. 🙂

  11. So here is my question to you Dave?

You say you live 3 hours from Seattle right? Why not move there? Seriously! Is it your work that keeps you where you are living now? I can so see you in Seattle and i’ve never even been there!!!

    You need mongolian food dude!!!

  12. Robin says:

Cereal is a perfectly acceptable dinner. I have cereal 3-4 times a week for dinner.

We don’t have a big variety of ethnic food here, but we do have some awesome locally owned restaurants (sushi, tapas) that are unexpected for such a small town.

  13. Naomi says:

I would die without readily available access to Greek food…

I’m guessing your grocer doesn’t carry import teas or HP sauce either. *sob*

  14. Iron Fist says:

Just visit Portland more often! You know I always hook you up with the good ethnic food. Next time it’s Lebanese.

  15. TWINKIE says:

    I “could care less”

then again I also “get off the car”

    and

    “take a bath”

So there you go. As much as I try to use the correct grammar once in a while those phrases spill out of my boca without my knowledge.

Of course my wonderful friends and family always feel the need to correct me and laugh and laugh as I argue that the way I say it is not only CORRECT. It’s also MORE CORRECT than their way.

Not that I ever really believe myself. I just like to argue with them. It’s fun.

  16. I wish chain restaurants would stop passing themselves off as “authentic” cuisine. I’m looking at *you* Olive Garden.

Oh, and reading “could care less” is one of my pet peeves as well.

  17. ChillyWilly says:

At least when you visit SLC, you have some diversity in eating choices.

Of course, pudding and Cocoa Puffs are always an option, as you said.

  18. Robert says:

Your description of the Italian place sounds like one of those cheap chains like Olive Garden, I’m guessing.

At least you got the Thai, Vietnamese and South American options. As a fellow vegetarian, if I were in your town I’d probably eat at those very very often.

You might not be missing much by not having a French place nearby, though. It’s rare they offer much for vegetarians. Since I still eat a little seafood on occasion, that’s usually what I end up having to order there. Too bad none offer “Tofu with Bearnaise”…Heh!
