LOLcraps

Posted on Monday, January 21st, 2008

Dave!Call me an insensitive bastard, but I hate getting forwarded "inspirational" and "funny" emails.

I realize the people who do the forwarding think they are being kind by sending me this stuff. They feel that because they find something hilariously funny or warmly comforting that everybody else will too, so they want to share it. Stories of lost puppies finding their way home against all odds. Sweet poems about how much Jesus loves you. Tales of people triumphing over adversity. Humorous accounts of children saying something embarrassing at the wrong time. It's all there for the forwarding, and it drives me nuts.

And the latest abomination to be cluttering my inbox?

LOLcats.

Which I'm guessing stands for "Laugh-Out-Loud Cats."

This phenomena of adding badly spelled and oddly phrased sayings to wacky pictures of cats has taken the internet by storm. Everybody just LOVES LOLcats! One of the most inexplicably popular seems to be this idiotic image...

Cheezburger

And I just don't get it. I certainly don't find it "lough-out-loud" funny. Or even mildly amusing.

When I'm not being inundated with LOLcats in the blogs I read, they're being forwarded to me in emails several times a week.

I'm hoping that the fad dies out soon, because I'm really close to creating my own LOLcats to send to people...

Which is probably safer than my first idea of making "LOLpussys" out of something altogether different.

= ahem =

Meanwhile, back to my Hannah Montana addiction...

I'm slowly catching up on all the episodes thanks to nightly marathons of the show on Disney2. But I'm starting to get really confused on a few things...

  • If Hannah Montana is one of the most popular pop stars on the planet, where is her money? I saw an episode where she agonized over having to return a car she was given. Why? She must be worth millions... why can't she just buy one?
  • I understand Miley's mother (Brooke Shields!) died... but did they ever say how she died? Miley's past is shrouded in mystery and full of holes which really undermines her character development.
  • Miley Stewart (secretly pop star Hannah Montana) has a father Robby Stewart (secretly former country star Robbie Ray who is public father to Hannah Montana). What I can't figure out is if Robbie Ray is supposed to be Hannah's manager, or if when Robby Stewart puts on that fake manager mustache he is supposed to be yet another secret identity? Because half the time Robby makes no effort to disguise himself as Robbie which should be making Miley's secret identity of Hannah obvious.
  • Speaking of secret identity busting... Miley doesn't even try to disguise her voice when she's Hannah Montana. Even blindfolded, somebody could easily pick out her distinctive speaking style. I realize that you have to suspend some belief here (Superman + Glasses = Clark Kent) but this is really stretching it.

Hmmm... I really should get back to work. Here it is 10:00, and I've got entirely too much to do before bedtime.

I’d have to say – my favoritest people who frequent my blog now and again – all either don’t get LOLcats or absolutely hate them. And I don’t get that. I laugh my freakin head off.

And the picture that kicked off a whole site (i can has cheezeburger) sends me reeling. That look on his face, like he sees the cheezeburger right there, and he’s already pudgy, and his head is tilted just a little, eyes glazed and mouth open.

If I email you a lolcat, do you promise to make one and send it to me? 🙂

  2. borysSNORC says:

    Yes! Yes! Yes!
Finally someone else who hates them fucking LOLcats!
I too have suffered with endless LOLcats in my inbox, posted on my Facebook, links via IM and peppering people’s blogs. I hate REAL cats, so I have no idea why my friends continue to bombard me with fucking LOLcats!
Down with LOLcats and Down with Frangi-fucking-pani car stickers!
    RMB

  3. Gecko Rock says:

I am not a fan of cats, yet I am strangely amused by LOLcats.

  4. Paul says:

    Dave –
what I don’t get done by 10:00 doesn’t get done. what a night owl you must be! (which explains why I’m caffiened-up and reading your blog at 5:45 a.m.)

  5. ssp says:

While I agree with your general sentiment on LOLcats, I ran across one which still makes me smile after having seen it hundreds of times before. Check the URL Link.

  6. I’m with you, most of the time I don’t get the joke with LOLCats. However, your cats did actually make me LOL (once I figured out what the hell they were supposed to be saying), so maybe you have a future as a LOLCats mogul.

You did see about the I Can Has Cheezburger folks going to Harvard, right? (Gotta be a sign of the Apocalypse.)

  7. tori says:

I think you need to come over and play the Hannah Montana trivia game my daughter got for her birthday with her. I don’t know any of the answers but both my daughters know them instantly. I have watched almost every single episode with them and I still haven’t thought about it nearly as much as you (and they) have! I wonder if you could beat them at the game!

  8. Chad says:

I watched an episode of Hannah Montana last night because of you. Evil bastard.

  9. Ben says:

Would you hate me if I mentioned my love for them?

  10. Avitable says:

1 out of 50 of them are clever and hilarious.

  11. lexi says:

I must agree-LOLcats are totally stupid. And why is it assumed that cats speak/write like 1st graders?

    I liked yours though….

  12. delmer says:

Ayan Coulterz pussy was lol. The cheesburger cat looks like he might be stuffed.

  13. ichi says:

    Think of this way…
You are watching a show that’s supposed to require no thinking. Take your 30 minutes and just not think while watching Hannah Montana; it should be relaxing enough.

  14. Miss Britt says:

Thank you for saying it – I freaking HATE LOLcats, mostly because I’m annoyed by how much everyone else seems to love it.

  15. Hilly Sue says:

This is why I totally puffy heart you…that last picture actually DID make me laugh out loud, and we all know that I too HATE HATE HATE the LOL Cats. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that I am annoyed by people that talk like that online, even without the pictures. Very annoyed.

  16. Chag says:

    Preach it, brother!

  17. amanda says:

I disagree with Avitable, I haven’t seen one yet that is funny.

  18. kilax says:

I think lolCats are really funny, but I hate getting stupid forwards. So I can feel your pain 😉

  19. bogup says:

Even though I’ve never seen a LOLcat email pic until now, I hate’m already. I also hate “pass along email jokes.” They aren’t funny! Thanks for exposing the joke frauds being perpetrated by the ignorant and throwing a damp, cold towel over the cat box.

  20. karla says:

Dave, seriously, how much do I love you right now? I, too, don’t get the LOL cats thing at all..and so many of my friends are NUTZ about them….but your kitten shitting on the cheeseburger haz me screaming with laughter. Like, my husband came running in wondering what waz up.

  21. supercereal says:

I agree, Dave. LOLcats were clever for about ten minutes; now they’re just annoying. On the other hand, Ape Lad has appropriated the LOLcats and created something actually fun at Hobotopia. It’s one of my must-reads, right after Blogography.

  22. lizriz says:

I heart LOL cats! They are my PC wallpaper at work!

Seriously, for every 20 that are meh, there’s one that’s frikkin’ hilarious! The one I have on my desktop right now is a cat sitting on a blue car in front of a red garage in England, and it says, “I’m not sure what you yank cats are up to, but here in England we speak the Queen’s English.”

Hold on, I’ll send it to you…

    😉

  23. Mr. Fabulous says:

I hate them as well. I am wildly attracted to you right now.

  24. Miss Ann Thrope says:

I don’t do those. I have plenty of cats to LOL at right here at home…and even they’re not very LOLie most of the time.

  25. chillywilly says:

I’m with Wayne and others here that like the LOL cats. I spend at least an hour a week browsing through the ICanHasCheezburger site. Not all of them are funny, but there’s some that crack me up.

I think part of it is that we have 4 cats at home that do similar stunts and poses.

  26. Kyra says:

I managed to stop most people from emailing me stuff like that. Being a bitch has its perks. As for your HM addiction, you’re starting to scare me. 😉

  27. Lewis says:

Hell, I haven’t been this close to pussy in years. I didn’t laugh at it then (didn’t even look at it, quite frankly)….and certainly am still not laughing. I can’t stand those forwarded emails…..trash, discard, never open ’em.

  28. Suzy says:

The most annoying thing about lolcats is that it was started by a couple in Hawaii just because they got a pic or two of cats. They started the site in January of ?? year (maybe 06?) And by March of the same year they were making $20,000 a month off advertisers. I can’t imagine what they’re making now.

  29. Jeff says:

When I received my first cheezburger cat email, I thought someone was trying to be clever like Stephen Colbert calling his book “I Am America (And So Can You).” But then I immediately realized it was just some moronic spam gone global.

  30. Michelle says:

While I can’t stand what the illiterate cats are “saying” I like to look at the animals, some are cute. And I’m not a cat person.

Yours however are funny. I think I missed something important here, WHY exactly is it you’re watching the teenage girl. Nightly. Just curious. Whatever brought that on?

  31. Karl says:

Urg, those stupid freaking cats. I’m with you all the way, dude. The misspelled words do nothing but make me cringe, not smile. Whoever invented them is going to hell…a hell with no cats.

  32. claire says:

I don’t get LOLcats either. Your idea of “LOLpussys,” however, did make me laugh.

‘Inspirational’/’funny’ email forwards drive me crazy too. In some cases, it’s like the sender expects good friend credit for forwarding that trash in lieu of any personal sentiment.

  33. Lee says:

I love LOLcats, and I hate to break it to you, but you just made some GREAT LOLcats there. Especially the Ann Coulter one. I want to forward that to every Republican I know. Except I don’t know very many.

  34. diane says:

Okay, I’m not e-mailing this to you, so hopefully you won’t kill me…

It’s a tiny kitten! In a dollhouse bathtub! What more must I explain??

Wait, you’re a 40 something man that likes to watch Hannah Montana. I don’t have to defend myself to you. 😉

  35. Robert says:

    Hannah who??

As for the cat…looks like he gave up on trying to get a cheeseburger and just ate his owners instead. Yikes.

  36. Mia says:

I’m so happy I’m not the only one who hates those damn cats. Who knew that the AOL ToGGlE Case Idiot Brigade would invade the blog world. For shame.

I’m kind of diggin on your LOLpussys idea though.

  37. Elizabeth says:

Ugh, I hate those things. Glad to see there are people out there who share my sentiments.

  38. sizzle says:

    i’ll admit it here publicly.

i hate LOLcatz or whatever the hell they are called. i don’t think they are funny. i know countless people who find them hilarious. why?!

not that i look down on them for finding them humorous…i just don’t get it. it’s like those 3D posters that were popular in the 1990s. i could never see the image and i just never got the big dealio about them.

    shrug.

  39. kaelb says:

I think you are overanalyzing Hanna Montana a bit.
Also, I find a good 50% of the LOLcats pictures funny. Some of them are actually clever, unlike the ones you are recieving. I especially like yours.

  40. yellojkt says:

People get a little creeped out by my fascination with shoes starring precocious tweeners, but I find them harmless light-hearted fun. But iCarly is WAAAY better than Hannah Montana.

  41. Lisa says:

OK, screw the cats however I totally support your HM addiction. I’m a closet addict and will watch an episode repeatedly. Sure, I use my daughter as an excuse but I’ll watch it even when she isn’t home.

No one has ever addressed how her mother died but Brooke was very opposed to the Loco Hot Cocoa. All I know is that Jackson mentions it in the third episode when he says to Miley, “It’s been three years.”

I need coffee before I can take on the other questions.

I think Robby Ray is robbing her blind because she couldn’t even buy a zPhone in one episode. A zPhone for the love of PETE!

  42. I hate LOL cats. My (much younger) brother insists that the moronic spelling is justified because it’s part of a new type of “Internet literacy”. I can’t even type that without rolling my eyes and feeling nauseas. (Can you live in fear of what you disdain?)

However, your LOL cats, I am digging.

(I have no commentary on Hannah Montana because I’m way too addicted to all the teen shows on the N, to bother watching Disney as well.)

  43. Jonathan says:

So hilarious that you almost made me spit coffee all over my computer screen. Yes, you almost did.

(Particularly with the skanky cat picture.)

Thought I was going to choke and die.

  44. Jan says:

Thank god I am not alone.
this is the dumbest Meme since the
    Badger flash video.
