Quiet

Posted on Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Dave!I am not a "light sleeper"... honest I'm not.

There's a train crossing not far from my home, and I can sleep through blaring train whistles no problem. I regularly stay at hotels that are at an airport with jets rumbling overhead at regular intervals. I've even stayed at hotels off the highway where a decent amount of road noise was present while I got some sleep.

But last night was something entirely different.

I don't know whether it was the acoustics... or the building construction... or the lack of interference between my room and the highway... or whatever. All I know is that it was the noisiest, most miserable hotel visit I have ever had in 22 years of travel across the globe. From the swankiest 5-star palaces to the most disgusting 0-star hovels, NONE of them even come close to the audio assault I experienced every frickin' minute I was at this hotel.

For some reason, this highway outside my window...

Hotel Highway

Caused me to finally end up sleeping here...

Hotel Bathtub Bed

I shit you not.

After 4-1/2 hours of trying everything I could think of to eliminate the noise, I finally took all my bedding to the bathroom, threw it in the bathtub, turned on the fan, then squeezed into the tub. I managed to get 2 hours of very uncomfortable sleep, but it was better than nothing. Especially since I had a full day (and then some) of work to face today.

Now I have to ask... what kind of f#@%ed-up hotel has rooms that are so noisy that turning on the television, starting up the air conditioner, and wearing noise-blocking headphones while music plays from your iPhone, is STILL not enough to block the highway noise so you can get some sleep?? The only way I could block the racket was to have even LOUDER noise happening, which doesn't help matters at all.

This morning I checked out of my big-name pricey hotel, canceled my second day stay, and moved to a crappier, cheaper chain hotel near the airport.

Which is paradise by comparison.

So you'll forgive me if I don't blog anything interesting or draw a cartoon or go commenting on blogs tonight... I'm just too frickin' tired.

And a little more than excited that I'm not sleeping in a bathtub tonight.

Holy crap, Dave. Having seen you in person, I cannot believe you slept at all in that tiny tub. You poor, miserable bastard.

  2. Robin says:

    🙁

Can’t even imagine sleeping in a bathtub.

Hope you get some sleep tonight.

  3. iddly says:

    You need a teddy bear

  4. Laurence says:

Ooooh, sleep well this night !

  5. Bec says:

Bathtubs are only for sleeping in when you are drunk and staying at a friend’s house who already has 90 people sleeping on the floor. You do kinda have to review this hotel with a picture of your new ‘bed’ room… Sleep well tonight, dream of destroying hotels… and highways…

  6. Lewis says:

Oh my god, that looks like quite the place to sleep….and, believe me, I’VE SLEPT IN QUITE A FEW NOT SO PRETTY PLACES (but, thankfully, with some pretty people.!!). I absolutely hate a noisy hotel room…..I think I’m getting old.

  7. Bre says:

My word! I’m sorry you had to suffer through that way – that couldn’t have been a good thing! Did you let the folks at the desk know?

  8. Kathy says:

Horrendous post. Hilarious post! Just discovered you via View from the Cloud. From my quick walk-through, looks like I’ve found another blog I can sink my teeth into.

  9. Whitenoise says:

dude: foam ear plugs (Trust the airline pilot)

  10. bogup says:

What is the opposite of sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress? Sleeping in a bathtub.
    Yech. That is terrible.
I hope you negotiated a week’s stay at a Maui hotel to partially compensate for what happened.

  11. Holy crapper, you are one tall dude to be sleeping in a bathtub. I think that would have pushed me over the edge! REALLY sorry that happened!

  12. Faye says:

Dave2, you’re in good company. I once lived with Zack the crazy border collie who hid in the bath tub during thunderstorms. He also chewed through furnace ductwork, thus earning him the name Zack Kevorkian for awhile.

  13. Long time lurker, first time to comment: You had me at “I Shit you not!”
I do hope you got a better nights sleep and the long-work day isn’t all bad.

  14. Michael says:

Cannot imagine having to barricade myself in a bathroom just to get away from noise. I’m usually pretty good about sleeping wherever and whenever: during thunderstorms, music playing, people talking, etc. The one thing I cannot stand is noise, as in, anything not happening with some kind of flowing melody to it. Happened last week, my roommate was playing a game. Had to ask him to turn the sound off.

  15. ssp says:

Luckily I can sleep virtually anywhere, no matter what noise there is (even with the window open right to the main road and not waking up in the rush hour

  16. iddly says:

Why didn’t you just lie on the bathroom floor? Or would you fall out 🙂

  17. Lisa says:

Oye, sounds like this trip is the trip from hell thus far and did you last post say you are in Pennsylvania? I hope it’s near Pittsburgh then because I’m closer to Philadelphia. The other side of the state has to be nosier.

Stay sane and get some rest.

  18. kapgar says:

What hotel and where so none of us stay there?

  19. RW says:

    Somewhere… there is a joke in here… struggling… working… somewhere. Dammit…

  20. sue says:

Unless you are 4 foot tall, I can’t imagine that tub being in any way comfortable. My sympathies.

  21. Hilly says:

nobody puts mah davey-joe in the corner bathtub!!!

  22. Miss Britt says:

Where did you put your arms and legs??

  23. Rick says:

I usually demand another room, AWAY from the traffic.

  24. sandra says:

I once slept in a closet for a similar reason. I feel your pain (although you’re taller than me, I’m guessing…so probably not completely…)

  25. Avitable says:

I’ve never voluntarily slept in a bathtub, but I’ve woken up in one filled with ice, with stitches in my side, and a note that said “Go to a doctor or you will die.”

  26. New reader! Yeah, I had to sleep in the bathtub of a hotel room once. I was sharing a room with my parents and my dad would shake the roof with his snoring. OMG, that was the most uncomfortable night of my life. But, I’m just 5’6″. Sorry for your discomfort.

  27. Woz says:

I just shared a hotel room with my ex-husband; separate beds. I’m writing a blog re: his snoring and how I couldn’t escape… I found your post.

    I considered the tub…

    I considered the car…
