Vertigo

Posted on Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Dave!I made the mistake of going to work today when I clearly wasn't ready to do so. I lasted until 3:30, which made me kind of an inspiration to myself, because I very nearly passed out around 2:00.

There I was, minding my own business, when all of a sudden I felt the world whipping around me in a kind of vertigo-like frenzy. It was much like drinking a fifth of tequila, but without the salt, lime, or hangover. Normally this would be a good thing, but the attack was so sudden that I instinctively tried to steady myself... even though I wasn't actually moving. This caused me to fall out of my chair, which is when I almost passed out. Probably from confusion.

HypnoDave

The strange thing is that after a few minutes I felt better than I have in days. This had me wondering if I wasn't sick but, in fact, possessed, and an evil spirit had just left my body. But then I was feeling all nauseous and run-down and figured probably not. So at 3:30 I ran back home so I could take a four-hour nap.

But that was four hours ago, so now I'm ready for bed.

Again.

The good news is that all my symptoms seem to be subsiding a little more each day. By my calculations, this means I should be back to tip-top shape sometime in late February, 2008.

Being sick sucks serious ass.

    Oh man, I’ve been there.

    That feeling SUCKS.

  2. James says:

Your body is just rebelling after a decade of little sleep.

  3. Baak says:

Amazing you could make Vertigo Dave after having it! Aieeeeee!

I’ve had that vertigo type thing a handful of times. Happens when I’m pushing way too hard after not getting enough sleep and/or taking the time to heal.

Asked a friend of mine whose an MD about it and he said it can be as simple as the body “shutting down” when you’re over-extended/exhausted, and one of the first things is the visual area.

    Interesting…

I take it as a very serious sign that I need to take at least a day off – completely – from work, eat some real food, take a walk outside, etc.

If I don’t, my body will force me to do so. It’s that simple. 😉

  4. whit says:

Try to get it together before you come to LA. Being sick is so not hot.

  5. Carl says:

Man! This happened to me too at work a lonnng time ago. I fell over… off a chair. How the fuck can you fall over off a chair?!?! Well I did. Messes with you don’t it. I think my problem was allergies though.

Whenever I hear the word Vertigo I think of David Blaine, and U2.

  6. ssp says:

    Get well soon!

  7. kapgar says:

    I’d type a message… full of well wishes… for a fast recovery… but… hypnoDave… making me… weary…

  8. Avitable says:

Have you thought about a trip to the doctor, acupuncturist, faith healer, or medicine man?

  9. jenny says:

    can’t. stop. staring.

    spinny. dave.

    what is your bidding, master?

  10. Bre says:

Holy Heck! Have you talked to someone about antibiotics and the like yet?

  11. Kyra says:

You know, people pay good money to feel like that. You got a freebie!

  12. Tonya says:

    Feel better, sweets.

  13. Lewis says:

Vertigo? Wasn’t that a movie? And, say there, those little spinning wheels in your eyes remind me of the little red and white starlight mints that you find in many restaurants. But they don’t spin like your eyes do. You’ve been sick a long time, man…..be careful…have you been to the doctor yet?

  14. blanetalk says:

I mentioned on the Sept. 3 comments that you should beware of the possibility of a relapse. This is just your body’s way of giving you that warning.

Man, this is a nasty, tenacious bug that’s latched onto you. I wouldn’t liken the dizzy spell to drinking tequila, as I am very certain I have always had a better time than that every single time I’ve ever drank tequila … even including a hangover.

February? Nah, you’re a couple of days away from being right as rain. Well, as right as a tortured-artist insomniac with a daunting backlog of work can be.

  15. Iron Fist says:

So you’ll be completely better just in time for the next TequilaCon? AWESOME!! What a trooper. 🙂

  16. sue says:

Oooooo…make it stop….!!! I’ve had that feeling and it is NO FUN. Please get better soon. Don’t know how much more of this empathy I can stand.

  17. Being sick is bad enough, but sick in the summer is just cruel. Drink lots of fluids, and I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend.

  18. sizzle says:

maybe you were possessed by an evil spirit? i’d say that’s cool but you’re suffering and that’s just not right. sleep is the best medicine!

  19. Hilly says:

Last night I was lying in bed thinking about you…but it wasn’t sexy or anything like that ;). As I sneezed, moaned about my sore throat and wished my head would stop pounding, I wondered if we can catch colds through blogs and email! 😉

I am really glad you are not super hurt after passing out!

  20. Rick says:

Okay, I’ve been staring at the spinny-thing all night. When does it do something?

  21. Wayne says:

Maybe that feeling was the spirit ENTERING your body instead of LEAVING it.

    Myuhahahahah!

  22. Naomi says:

    Oooh… aaahhh…

I recently recovered from blunt-force-trauma induced vertigo. Although somewhat brain damaging, I think it made me smarter.

In any case, perhaps spinning in the opposite direction of your vertigo will counter-act the effect. It would be funny to watch at the very least.

  23. Jill says:

I was going to suggest a trip to the doctor, but Avitable beat me to it. Maybe something as simple as a round of antibiotics or something could have you and running in a few days – as opposed to a few months… I’ve learned the hard way that sometimes trying to overcome this kind of crap by yourself isn’t always the best way to go. We really do want you to get well soon.

  24. RW says:

    I remember
    (tdoo-DOO)
    I remember
    (tdoo-DOO)
    I remember
    (TDOO DOO)
    they had a swimming pool…

  25. Tracy Lynn says:

Jesus, Dave. Warn a girl when you’re going to whip out the Hypno-Dave, will ya? I suddenly have an urge to build you a shrine….

  26. apricoco says:

    I order thee to a doctor! Poste-haste!

BTW, vertigo dave gave me vertigo. Freaky.

  27. bogup says:

Had diagnosed vertigo once. It was horrible. Couldn’t stand up w/o falling. Nausea, vomiting, the whole enchilada — well, I didn’t have Mexican food, but you get the idea. MD said it would cure itself in about a week to ten days, and it did. All because of an inner ear issue with the little teeny hairs out of balance….

  28. Mike says:

Whenever I hear “vertigo” I think of Arrested Development. Can I call you Lucille Austero?

    Hope you get better soon.

  29. You know, some of us (*cough* *cough*) have also been having vertigo lately and had to look away from your little Spinnin’ Dave lest we risk another ’bout.

    *Evil look*

But other than that, he’s very cute. I echo someone else’s sentiments – I’m totally shocked that you could create that after having vertigo. Speaking of which – it sucks, doesn’t it? You have my sympathies (just, no more Spinnin’ Daves, K?).
