Broiled

Posted on Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Dave!My favorite meal of the day is breakfast. It's the only repast that I really try to eat regularly, and is easily my biggest meal of the day. I thought that this would change once I went on my restrictive diet (which I am starting again tomorrow) but it didn't. Even without toast, waffles, and cereal drenched in high-fructose corn syrup, I still love to eat each morning. The food may have changed, but my desire for breakfast is the same.

Except while traveling.

When I'm on the road, I rarely have time for breakfast, and always seem to end up in some fast food joint eating complete and total crap. Yesterday, for example, I was in a hurry and stopped at Burger King for a quick bite because it was convenient.

Note to self... STOP EATING AT BURGER KING!!

Their breakfast stuff is often stale, and is always... ALWAYS cold. This morning I had disgusting cold eggs with unmelted cheese on a stale "Croissandwich" that was practically inedible. What the hell? Isn't Burger King famous for flame-broiling shit? Why not put some of that heat on their crappy breakfast sandwiches?

I know what I'd like to flame broil...

Flame Broiled Burger King
With a twist of my ring, I flame-broil the Burger King!

I choked the disgusting Croissandwich down, because I was hungry, had no time to go anywhere else, and am accustomed to eating in the mornings. Then I was sick most of the day because the crap sat in my stomach like a rock.

And did I learn my lesson?

No.

This morning I wanted a frickin' breakfast burrito because I thought Qdoba would be open and serving them. But, unlike the SeaTac airport Qdoba which serves an awesome breakfast burrito, the Spokane location doesn't open for breakfast at all. Obsessing over getting my dang burrito, I decided to go to Sonic. I tried eating there once before, but "America's Drive-In" doesn't have any options for vegetarians (apparently, people who don't eat meat are un-American?). But I did remember they had a breakfast burrito, so off I went.

I had a "Super-Sonic Breakfast Burrito" without the sausage along with a Tropical Smoothee and a side of Tater Tots.

The eggs in my burrito were kind of nasty and browned. The Smoothee wasn't blended enough, so I couldn't even drink it because massive chunks of pineapple were sticking in the straw. The tater-tots were cold... and I'm not saying they were "not hot" they were actually cold. Yet another crappy breakfast that made me miserable the rest of the day (and driving 3 hours home in that state was not fun).

I'm hoping I've learned my lesson. From now on, if I don't have time to dine at a proper restaurant and eat a decent breakfast, I should just not eat. I'd much rather be hungry than sick.

Of course, I think we all know the odds of me actually remembering that I learned this lesson...

I like McDonald’s breakfast the best out of the fast foods breakfast sandwiches. Its almost always hot and delicious

  2. sizzle says:

maybe you should bring granola bars with you everywhere you go just in case?

  3. whit says:

Aren’t there apples growing on both sides of the road up there? Those are good.

  4. Michelle says:

Yeah, Burger King breakfasts are really bad. I generally would rather skip breakfast then eat their crap. Of course some are worse then others. I never had sonics breakfast. But that egg sandwich on texas toast looks good in the commercials. Another place to avoid is Jack in the Boxes breakfast…. way to greasy.

  5. Hilly says:

Yipes, back on the diet! I went on my strict eating plan Monday after I realized I’d had wayyy too much to eat last week :).

If I ever get fast food breakfast, it is McDonalds and just the plain Egg McMuffin. You know how I feel about fast food but sometimes it sucks cause that is all there is to eat!

  6. Wayne says:

While my absolute favorite breakfast is Whataburger’s taquitos (potato egg and extra cheese please), I very much like Sonic’s breakfast. I hit it often, and have only ever had the opposite problem – the stuff is TOO hot. Especially the burritos. I have to wait a number of minutes for it to be cooled down enough to actually hold in my hands without it burning.

And I don’t think I’ve ever had a cold croissanwich. I’ve probably literally eaten 300 in my lifetime, but granted, most of them were probably from the same BK that’s been here 20+ years.

  7. Avitable says:

I’ve had Sonic breakfast several times, and it’s usually good. Maybe you’re just picking really poorly managed restaurants.

  8. J says:

I am starting to be addicted to fastfoods. Hmmm maybe you should bring a microwave to BK, just kidding!

  9. Miss Britt says:

“apparently, people who don’t eat meat are un-American?”

    Well… duh.

Do you think this country was built by a bunch of free spirited hippies or something? (and everyone knows all vegetarians are free spirited hippies) Jeeez.

  10. Amy says:

At this very moment I am eating a delicious No Bull Sloppy Joe, which is vegetarian, made with TVP. Mmmmmmmmm!

  11. StephanieP says:

I try to eat oatmeal every day before work, but if I’m running late, which I usually am, I just have a granola bar and some yogurt that I have stashed in the tiny fridge I have hidden under my desk at work. You should try that!

  12. Mia says:

McDonalds has the best breakfasts by far…The Egg McMuffins. I try to avoid them though because once I have one I start craving them every morning. They lace those puppies with something.

  13. Rick says:

The Spousal Unit and I tried Sonic for the first time while we were visiting Iowa last week. I swear to gawd they must’ve serving the leftovers from the A & W’s that closed in the seventies.

  14. Birdie says:

You’re right. It’s hard to find a decent breakfast while you’re traveling. And, ironically, the larger the town, the more difficult your quest becomes. Which is probably why we resort to fast-food chains.

I’ll take a small, po-dunk town diner anyday! Just look for the place where the local law enforcement is having coffee.

  15. Dustin says:

Do not disrespect the tater tots. It is scientifically proven that tater tots are marvelous at all temperatures.

I think you owe the tots an apology.

  16. Kael says:

Strange, I have always had good experiences at Burger king with their breakfast. Is that because I get the french toast sticks?
I like the french toast sticks because occasionally they stick in one more than I ordered.

  17. bogup says:

Preferred take-out brkfst = McDonald’s Egg McMuffin with sausage and orange juice.
Better nutrition = energy bar and large coffee.
That said, it is a sushi bar for dinner tonight. mmmmmmmmmmmmm

  18. Robert says:

If you’re looking for a quick breakfast on the go, I’d look for a Brueggers or Panera. Heck, for that matter, any little old coffeehouse that sells muffins or biscotti would still be better than a burger joint!
