Wrong

Posted on Monday, August 27th, 2007

Dave! And so I'm back from Chicago browsing through all the TV shows stacked up on my TiVo, when I notice that one of my favorite shows, My Boys has several new episodes waiting for me. I've always known that the show is based in Chicago, but I never realized how entrenched the show is in Chicago until tonight. The characters regularly drop the names of Chi-Town locations I've been to or through, but it wasn't until they talked about eating tapas at Emilio's that it finally sunk in. That's the restaurant where RW invited me to dinner, then subsequently went insane and had to be taken away by the police (or something like that). It's cool to know that not only is the show funny, but it works hard at being authentic as well.

Anyway...

On the way home from work today, I made the turn onto my street and noticed something odd in the distance. A car on my side of the road was going in the wrong direction, heading straight for me. Thinking that it was a temporary adjustment because of a cat or pothole (or whatever) on their side of road, I wasn't worried. But he never went back into his lane. He kept coming. My concerned deepened when he started honking his horn as he approached. Not knowing what else to do, I slowed down to a near-stop, and waited to see what's going on. But the guy kept coming. And once he got almost to the hood of my car, he swerved into the proper lane (still honking), flipping me off as he passed, then went back into my lane.

And then it happened.

Suddenly I found that I was doubting myself over something I knew to be correct.

"Holy crap! Am I driving in the wrong lane?!?"

It was only for a fleeting second that I thought the right lane was the wrong lane, but it's been bothering me all night. I'm a total genius! How could I question myself like that? Especially over something so fundamental like driving, which I do every day.

It's a mystery. And I still don't know why that guy was driving on the wrong side of the road. Perhaps he just got back from living in England or something? Dunno.

And, lastly, speaking of wrong...

NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Geeks of Doom is reporting that Keanu Reeves has been tapped to play Klaatu in the remake of one of my favorite films ever, The Day The Earth Stood Still. I mean, come on, the movie really doesn't need to be remade in the first place... but Keanu Reeves?!? That's like getting Bender from Futurama to play the intergalactic peace-keeping robot Gort...

Keanu Day The Earth Stood Still

Heh, heh, heh... "Klaatu barada niktooooo-bite my shiny metal ass, humans!"

It's a sick, sad world.

  1. James says:

Oh come on, Bender is the coolest robot since RD-D2. Sure it would be totally twisted and wrong to cast him as a peace-loving robot..but the results might be hilarious.

And Bender beating the crap out of Keanu Reeves would be cool too..”Take that, Neo! The One my ass!”

  2. adena says:

I was going to say…Maybe the guy was from the UK.

But, you beat me to it.

  3. whit says:

    At least Bender can act.

You weren’t on a one-way street were you?

  4. Avitable says:

I think Keanu’s underrated as an actor.

  5. kapgar says:

Well, at least I don’t have to blog my disdain over Keanu in the role.

  6. RW says:

Some people get excited about their baseball team, or their candidate. It so happens I am particular about my gaseous substances. What THE HELL OF IT!

  7. MRKisThatKid says:

Yikes, dumb people are really scary, I’d soon be sitting in some brown slop if that happened to me.

  8. Wayne says:

They could do worse than Keanu. They could have gotten Kramer.

  9. serap says:

Thanks for the nu-nu picture Dave, I have been hopelessly in love with him since I was about 14, and still believe that he will one day (soon, I hope) father my children. Sigh. When we drove in the US, I have to admit that my ex did accidently drive on the wrong side of the road a couple of times, but I screamed ‘ON THE RIGHT’ quick enough to keep us out of danger… except for in Santa Barbara, where he managed to go round a roundabout the wrong way and briefly stopped traffic! Damn tourists!

  10. OK, I tried to leave this comment on last year’s “Bob meet-up”, but I got some goofy-ass error. So, here you go…

“This has ALWAYS been my fav along with Bad Robert’s bad “poop cycle”. Gawd, you make me laugh, every time I read this! This is classic Dave2! Oh yeah, one of these days, I’m going to Davecago to meet all of the cool people (RW and Mrs. RW most definitely)! I guess it depends upon when I get to actually live in the U.S. It will happen! TRUST.”

  11. sizzle says:

maybe he was playing chicken? never ever question your genius!

  12. Not A Granny says:

I was just over at Chasing Vincenzo and saw your comment on Walla Walla Sweet Onions. I grew up in Wenatchee and am now living in Florida. I miss those onions, the Vidalia’s here are nothing like them!

    Just wanted to say hi.

  13. Bre says:

    1) I big time love “My Boys”
    2) I get really excited when shows hit authenticity dead on – it makes it so much better!
    3) Keanu as any character is generally a bad choice…

  14. What a twat. I’d have let him hit me so I could get a new car. And a new body ‘cuz mine would probably be all messed up then. HEY! I could get those breast implants I always wanted…sweet!

  15. bogup says:

Just had a big Walla Walla onion tonight with dinner — along with some heritage tomatoes and oil, balsamic vinegar and ground pepper & salt. mmmmmmmmm. Tomorrow heading for the big city of Walla Walla. Gonna be hot there the next three days…but will see how the grapes are agrowin’ in the valley.

  16. Dan says:

See, perfect casting would have Keanu playing the robot…or would that require too much range?

  17. Well, if I recall correctly it’s not a big speaking role…

It’s such an awesome movie! It’s might be the only B&W movie I own.

  18. blanetalk says:

Yikes! That’s the worst idea for a remake since Wild Wild West!

Not that that choice of Keanu is really troubling to me. It wasn’t the acting of Michael Renny that made the original so compelling … it was the story, particular in the context of the nuclear bomb tensions of the times.

Keanu can run the gamut from apathy to angst as well as any of the current crop of acting “superstars” of today, well enough to serve the story. And the special effects will no doubt be amped to the max. But without that historical context, I just don’t see how it will resonate with people in the same way, no matter how well they make it.

Heh, heh! I read this and started thinking about Bender as other famous robots in films … I vote for Bender as C3P0! Ha ha ha!
