Tarzan

Posted on Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Dave!I've recently started re-reading the Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Despite being a hardcore ERB fan, I avoided the Tarzan books for years because I assumed they were as crappy as the movies. I loathed the way Tarzan ran around grunting like a moron in the films, and always thought that's just the way he was. But the "real" Tarzan in the books wasn't stupid at all. It turns out he's a genius who speaks a dozen languages, runs a financial empire, AND happens to be Lord of the Jungle...

After a while, the books get a little repetitive, but the earlier stories are brilliant.

Right now I'm trying to finish up Book #4, The Son of Tarzan, so I am going to stop blogging now...

Wonder why they had to dumb down the movies? I would think the viewers would have appreciated a more “complex” Tarzan as much as the readers. Hmmm, maybe lazy screenwriters?

  2. Avitable says:

I, too, run a financial empire and am a Lord of the Jungle.

  3. The Chad says:

Dude, what happened to the Sanjaya Mohawk? You cant tell me that Tarzan Dave swings around without the mohawk!

  4. I’ve never read the the Tarzan books because I hated the movies. It’s worth a look then.

And Lil Dave in a loincloth-very cute.

  5. Kapha says:

Bad Monkey looks like he’s about to head-butt Lil’ Dave …

  6. Ditto what Frances said 😀

  7. Eileen Dover says:

Is it bad all I can think of is those little Dave nipples?

    Wow.

    Cartoon pr0n.

    Purr.

  8. Bec says:

I take it the loincloth is based on a favourite outfit? I, too, avoided the books because of the films… Off to the library go I

  9. Anonymous says:

That is all very, very very “boy-like”. Cool. I’m reading the “Little House on the Prairie” series to my two little ones. We’re all girls here.

  10. Bre says:

Wow! I wasn’t actually aware that there were more Tarzan stories!

But, yeah, the books are always 10 million times better than the movies!

  11. Laurence says:

    Hi Lil’Dave Tarzan… I am Lil’Jane ! How are you ?

  12. Troy says:

How many Tarzan books are there? A couple dozen?

I’m finishing up the “His Dark Materials” trilogy at the moment. About 60 pages of “The Amber Spyglass” left. Philip Pullman doesn’t think much of Catholics 🙂

  13. Nicole says:

My Grandfather loved, loved, LOVED the Tarzan books. He had the complete set and was alwasy trying to convince me I should read them. I never did. Maybe I should give them another try?

  14. Randy says:

Those Tarzan movies (w/Johnny W. and Maureen O.)were THE BEST when I was a kid! Thou shalt not speak ill…Though I gotta admit, now when I look at them, they are maybe not THAT good…but believe me, when I saw them in the ’60’s on the Saturday afternoon tv movies, it was a treat when they were on. Jane was soooo hot!

    : )

  15. Bogup says:

Is it difficult to hold onto a slippery green vine with only three fingers and a thumb? Just wondering here.
At least BM has a prehensile (I’ve always wanted to use that word, until now) tail and prehensile hands and prehensile feet.

  16. Mrs RW says:

Little Dave is hot in a loincloth! Is he able to emulate Johnny Weismuller’s famous Tarzan yell? Sound effects would be good here.

  17. delmer says:

I applied to be Lord of the Jungle a couple of years ago but didn’t meet the language requirement.

    Damn public schools!
