Garfield

Posted on Saturday, August 5th, 2006

Dave!Sometime back in 1979-1980 I ran across a comic strip called "Garfield" about a total bastard of a cat who tormented his dorky owner Jon. I really liked it because it was a little more sarcastic than "Peanuts" and the rest of the funny paper offerings. Since I didn't get the strip in my local paper, my grandmother was nice enough to clip them out and send them to me. Every couple of weeks I'd look forward to getting a fat envelope filled with Garfield strips to read, which was pretty sweet!

But, after a couple years, I couldn't help but notice that the strip was getting repetitive and boring. Rather than come up with something new and interesting to talk about, the team of writers and illustrators that Jim Davis hired to do the strip just maintained the status quo (about the only decent thing to happen since then was the Garfield cartoon show, which was far more interesting than the strip). Eventually I lost interest and moved on to more "cutting edge" humor like my beloved "Calvin & Hobbes" and "The Far Side."

Well, today I ran across something rather cool... the people behind Garfield actually realize that the strip sucks, and have provided a tool to let you create your own!

Dave Does Garfield

I need to make a tool like that for my DaveToons. It would be a heck of a lot faster than having to draw them.

    Two words:

    Get. Fuzzy.

  2. Chase says:

    I wouldn’t mind playing with Dave’s tool.

    Um. The cartoon…um…dialogue…hmmm…nevermind.

  3. Michelle says:

I totally love Calvin and Hobbs. I have all the books. They dont have any of the good comic strips in our Newspaper, though, which sucks.

  4. RW says:

You could have screaming-kids-in-a-store and thier bitchy ho Mommies as things you can plug in to the pictures!

    That would be way cool!

  5. EDDIE says:

I always like fat lazy cat.

  6. Carl says:

Dude go for it. Davetoon maker would be sweet. Put yourself in there, random martian alien, Liz Hurley, and have backgrounds such as the hard rock cafe, a taxi, etc.

  7. Chanakin says:

I can’t be the only one making x-rated Garfield toons with this program…

  8. James says:

I agree totally that Garfield has slid down a long slope. I have several book collections of the strip, and enjoy them, but mostly the new ones are lame-o. There was brief excitement lately, because Jon actually had a girl like him (the vet lady).

I LOVE Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes, both the cartoonists are insanely brillant, though the latter can be a bit wordy. Dilbert is in third place, and is the only one that I can laugh out loud at.

  9. sultana says:

Ah, Garfield. I agree about the strip version going nowhere. You probably already know this, but the cartoon shows are available on DVD.

A Davetoon maker would totally kick @$$! Don’t forget to include the monkey 😉

In another register, we have in France and Belgique “Le Chat” by Philippe Geluck.

  11. Eve says:

I read Garfield when I was a kid, but I too outgrew it for C&H and Far Side. I haven’t read a Garfield strip in like 15 years. But I was having fun with that make your own strip they have. I had to stop, I could spend all damn day messing with it.

  12. Avitable says:

I looked for the “Insert Dave” button, but couldn’t find it!

  13. Epona says:

Garfield swearing. O_O Oh my. Lol.

I love Garfield. Yeah, it’s not as great as it once was, but I still look forward to having it e-mailed to me everyday (that and Pearls Before Swine. That strip is awesome!). Wish I could afford to buy Garfield on DVD. That would be sweet. The cartoon was great.

My local paper, The Star Tribune, ran Calvin & Hobbes as a replacement strip for a few months last year. I wish they would bring it back. I had never read C&H before, but I really loved it.
